I’m glad to see people finding ways to live and thrive without spending every cent they make on rent or mortgage...save as much as they can living this way and THEN buy a house...don’t be burdened your whole life with a huge house payment. This is so smart. And having solar power too. Keep it up kids!

Absolutely. Don't be beholden by The Man. Or some stupid overpriced house. Save up every dime you can, wait until the market is near bottom, then buy several. Rent them. Buy more. Rent them. Let others work for you. Then you become The Man. Life goes full circle.

I ran out of 4040 like 5 times even though I thought I added up everything before hand. You also spend about as much on fasteners and slidy, bendy parts as you do on aluminum extrusion. It's a great system, already have more bars in my cart.

Hi fella, a little tip from someone who lives in UK where rain and damp weather loves rotting vehicles, just squirt some old used engine oil (new oil if you prefer) in the wells of the body panels then it won't matter if there is debris in them as you won't ever have to worry about rust ever again. But if you live in a dry state then ignore this comment. Keep up the good work...

This is an awesome design. I'd love to know how it's been working out now that it's built. I am planning to do something similar with slats that slide out over the kitchen counters to make the full bed and the mattress will become backrest pillows when in 'day lounge' mode.

  • @DavidM2002

Since you have built this in a vehicle which will be subject to the usual bouncing and vibration, I would go back to every single fastener and put a drop of blue Loctite on the theads. I use a lot of 8020 on small machines and without a bit of thread locker, something will come loose. Guaranteed. And, take your allen wrenches with you and whatever small hand tools you assembled this with. At least on your first few outings. One other thing to look out for - sometimes when you tighten a bolt, it will feel like it is tight. In fact, unless it is the right length, it may have bottomed out in the channel before getting truly tight. It's easy to do and the difference between the correct length bolt and one that's too long it usually only 1/8". YMMV.

Good questions, it does indeed create a thermal bridge but w/plywood and my mattress I never actually feel it. If you bought the perfect amount of materials and didn’t make any mistakes you could probably do it for $500. I’d estimate more towards $700 in reality though.

I guess you have to weigh how much a 'thermal bridge' will affect your comfort vs the mold/rot resistance of aluminum, as well as it's weight to strength ratio advantages. I sometimes think that van builds obsess unnecessarily when it comes to insulation, especially for a house that has wheels and most likely doesn't have to stay in seasonally severe environments. But for a minority of people who may need a 4 season van, a thermal bridge might be a deal breaker.

Unless your mattress is less width then the frame. So you only save floor space and what you use there can't be higher than the bed.
It seems to me a better system would be a folding frame. One that you collapse at an angle so that you can have plenty of extras on the walls. It's hard to explain this in text sorry.

Or... make a three piece bed that has two "folds" in it. The last one stays were it is, the middle one becomes the back rest (complete with shoulder seat belts on each side of the van) and the front part lowers to the bottom of the back rest to become two more seats with seatbelts. That's my design hope, and I came here because of an "extrusion van bed" search. Cheers!

Wonder how it worked out attaching 80/20 to the van frame without a thermal break? I'm assuming that in winter, the bed frame is the same temperature as the van exterior.

Seven O'Savage I think you’re good on your wiring as far as wiring it to components to a box wood box I noticed other you tubers doing it the same way and haven’t heard any major malfunctions such as fires, as the electrician was trying to tell you earlier this morning.Really like the bed design I’m just skeptical mattress having to be super thick to compensate for the holes in Rail system

I ended up going with IKEA metal bed supports ($20 Each x4) As they extend And slot into place Bed mattress folds back And you can pull up the supports ether way Front/Rear Or all for moving items. With brackets I think i spent $150 And its a double size bed 400Lbs no problem ...But it was your channel that got me thinking so thanks !

I made the same thing from wood, but used a double bed base. It's lasted 4+ years so far. I use two 6'x2' mattresses and just put one on top of the other when stored collapsed.

OK - I had planned on making a bed I designed using ideas from FaroutRides bed.
Yours is better for what I need and is quite cool.
But - I need more practical instruction on 80 20 if I'm to attempt this.
Thanks again for leading me toward better design. I already have the right mattress for this type of sliding frame!
    Yours with warm regards
    Jennie

Nice job, tell me how many linear bearings did you use, do the centre moving slats just slide along on top of the stationary.

Very nice! I'm just starting a van and decided to use 80/20... should be fun right? Quick question: where did you get the linear slides?

hey mate love the design! just curious if you recessed the 1515 as well to account for the plus nut sticking out (mentioned in your explanation at 2:12 for the old extrusion you were using). cheers

Hi this is a great design! Are there plans you could share? Also looking to modify and have the option to slide the other direction as well to allow for a view of the sky.
In addition, want to be able to prop up the foot to make into a lounge facing out the back... any thoughts? Thanks
