I left education at the end of 2022 and have been a flight attendant for year now. I never knew that I could have a life like this. I am genuinely so happy and stress free! Teaching in America today is literally TRAUMA! However, even with that I still miss the kids more than my heart can express, but I can always volunteer or sub to snap myself back into reality. I never in a million years thought I’d leave teaching but I am so happy I did. Life exist outside of the “teacher identity”. 💕💕 Take the leap! You only get one physical life!!!

Thank you for sharing Trishton. I think it is SO IMPORTANT for teachers to know that they have options and don't have to feel "trapped" in the field.

I quit after 2 years due to terrible student behavior and lack of consequences. It’s only going to get worse, I believe.

Although I left teaching this year, it's refreshing to see a teacher who actually likes their job and gives a fresh perspective for people who want to teach.

I'm glad you touched on how your priorities change over time in life. I went into teaching fully intending to devote my all. Then I had a baby. Having to choose teaching over my child was not cutting it.
I'm now back to a corporate life setting but remotely and very happy. I'm happy teaching my son how to count and read.

I am also a DOE teacher and what you said about work life balance is so true. And yes I do agree I am very fortunate to be a NYC teacher because the pay does well for me ☺️ thank you for this incredible video Amanda

In the 27 years I was a teacher and dozens of admin I knew exactly one I considered an education expert. Most of them say they are. "We are instructional experts!" No, you are NOT. You taught 3 years and realized how impossible the job of a teacher is, then got into admin where you can criticize and be hateful.

I really enjoyed heating you speak about this! I’m a third year teacher and it can get really discouraging. I adore my students but all the extra things and administration not supporting us can make it hard. I try to leave it all at school and not work outside contracted hours. Makes for grading and planning to be a bit slower but trying to set my boundaries somewhere!! Thank you for the video, Amanda! You are a great person to look up to❤

Thanks for the thoughtful video. I started substitute teaching a few months ago, and I’m enjoying the kids so much that I’m thinking of getting my teaching license eventually as a second career in my late 40s. I’m also a mom of four, and my kids have had a couple of miserable teachers over the years who were obviously burned out and did not want to be there, and the kids suffered because of it.
For all those reasons, I have two requests for teachers who are feeling burned out themselves. One, if you are truly miserable and taking it out on your students, PLEASE, PLEASE do everyone a favor and find a new career. Two, please stop with the “Why I Quit Teaching” videos and negative comments online. All you are accomplishing is discouraging people from becoming teachers. If you’re trying to break the system more than it is already broken by encouraging teachers to quit “en masse” because you think that’s what it will take for real change to occur, I’m here to tell you that you’re going to make a lot of kids suffer in the process because you’re just dragging the whole system down even more.

I don't have any plans of leaving Education, I love what I do despite all the challenges involved. Currently I work on three Private schools here in Sao Paulo (Brazil) with elementary school classes. The three schools are near my house. I teach History and Geography (similar to your Social Studies there). I know it's exhausting, If you're not experienced you're going to be frustrated at some point, but with time and patience, you're gonna succeed. Being in three private schools is really hard and demanding, sometimes I have to spend lots of hours planning things, correcting things, dealing with so many annoying parents 😅 but Im doing it succesfully. Of course sometimes I have to cancel some break time with friends but I always find some time for fun aswell. If you learn to plan your daily life with discipline and patience you can do everything. I'm currently single so it helps aswell. Luckily I'll be on vacation on July, we always get one month of vacation on July here. It's what we call "winter" vacation here because u know, we're in southern hemisphere while you guys get summer vacation there. But I love your teaching videos Amanda, we can share lots of experiencies here ✌

Amanda is a star for having this honest discussion and noting these key points that all admin as well as policy makers and those who are thinking about becoming a teacher should know.
Being a secondary social studies/English/music teacher at an adult school that enrolls teenagers as well, I've had a unique experience but the same exploitive demands that extend outside of contract hours coupled to no living wage, no school safety coupled to no discipline from admin, and inadequate funding coupled to meager supplies/technology.

"but I think in education, as a teacher, there is no real work life balance. there are moments where you are going to have to choose one over the other and with time hopefully you become content and okay with that" wow.. going to sit with this for a while. and also LOL cracking up at 16:33 because I went an ivy league school to become a teacher.. and then left the classroom... and am now considering whether I want to return. ahh anyways, appreciate the video :) enjoy your summer!

Thank you for watching ALL the way to the end. It was a long one and I appreciate it. And yes!! Everyone always asks me about the work/life balance, and it's the conclusion I've made. I am eager to hear other teachers experiences, thoughts and Oh No! lol the Ivy League comment lol sorry! I hope one day your loans are no longer a huge financial burden. Considering whether you should go back?! Interesting! Everyone's path is so different, you never know if you might work a second time around. Good luck with your decision and thank you@

It’s so sad that this is system-wide. I teach in Chicago and I feel the same way these people in your comments feel. If I wasn’t married and had my husbands income to support me, I don’t think I could be a teacher on one single income

Great video. Your passion for teaching is awesome! I am going into my sixth and final year as a seventh grade ELA teacher. I am leaving because of work life/balance and a desire to work within another area of education: college advisor, admissions or career coach. I love working one on one with my students and want to transfer that passion to help those starting out in higher ed.

You’re spot on with your prediction that people will not go into teaching as a life long career. I’m 22 and will be starting as a teacher this year but have gone in with the mindset that I will probably only do it for a few years and then move onto something else.

For me, I get substantially more effectiveness out of my performance as a tutor and someone who works 1-1 with students. Behavioral management and command just doesn't come naturally at all for me so I'm always fighting a steep uphill battle anytime I try a role as any kind of instructor. The intellect is there but my verbal iq at least for getting command is low and that's just something im going to have to accept and work around. Tje material is note a problem, I've had much better luck as a long term Sub for Algebra 2 honors and night instructor for HS seniors in math recovery courses. IDK from an economics standpoint my dillagence on fairly unempressive pay has payed off, but career wise I wish I could find a more sustainable success in a more prominent role instead of these temporary instances or certain years in low profile roles like Paraprofessional. There's just no meaning or pride right now. All im looking for is something to be proud of and something I actually add ro a community, I just haven't felt it.

I quit teaching in 1988 after 7 years. Teaching is not a reasonable job for a variety of reasons such teachers typically get blamed for things over which they have no control, such as the behavior of kids who ideally wouldn’t even be permitted in their classes in the first place were standards being enforced. Then also although teachers are basically organized labor and not management unlike blue collar trades they cannot bill for overtime. Then also the summer vacations are used as an excuse to grossly underpay teachers even in terms of their base pay. So since teaching is not properly structured it is bad for your mental health to take the job seriously. And then if you can’t just wing it and fake the job then your only recourse is to quit to go do something more reasonable.

I am looking into leaving the teaching field for good. I got accepted into a Medical Assistant program at my community college. Once i get through that I am leaving the education field for good. Society doesn't respect or pay teachers nothing. Plus the students are so disrespectful and don't have respect for authority. Plus there is no room for growth or to even earn more money. Yeah I rather go into healthcare instead of teaching. I won't ever go back into the teaching field again. It's not worth it anymore.

Thanks for this video, and I look forward to any content on classroom management.
Tbh, I struggle with consequences as well, because I don’t know what type of consequences to give. I don’t love the idea of taking away recess because a lot of student who exhibit behaviour need those breaks… Does anyone have any suggestions??

Do you teach Manhattan? Does the teaching salary cover the high cost of living? I teach in a large urban district in OH that pays first year teachers $50-52k. Cost of living here is lower than NYC. I'm wondering how that compares to NYC.

    • @amandaros3
      @amandaros3  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hi, it depends on where you work. If you work for the Department of Education (the city) you have a set salary and that info is public knowledge, first year teachers with a bachelors degree start at 61,000 and those who have their masters start at 66,900. I don't teach in Manhattan but it is good money, especially once you pass the 5 year mark. At this point if anyone wants to move to NY, Manhattan shouldn't be the place. It's changed a lot after covid, higher cost of living, many areas are ghost towns and it's just not what it used to be. Living in one of the other 5 boroughs is a better option.
