The Cathedral of Asti

The Duomo d'Asti, which is also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with eighty-two meters in length and twenty-four meters in height and width is one of the largest churches in Piedmont, the maximum expression of Gothic architecture in the region and can be placed among the largest examples of Lombard Gothic appreciable in northern Italy. The current cathedral was built in 1266. Between the first and second decades of the fourteenth century, the cathedral was enriched with a magnificent and grandiose side portal, in flowered Gothic; the work, due to its extraordinary level of quality, was long considered to be from the late 15th century; in reality in that era there were only moderate decorative additions financed by the noble Gerolamo Pelletta. Inside the church there are numerous works of art including the canvases of the painter Gandolfino da Roreto. It also houses The Lamentation over the Dead Christ, a sculptural group dating back to the beginning of the sixteenth century and coming from the Chapel of the Ascension. It consists of eight polychrome terracotta figures. The Epiphany chapel decorated by Gian Carlo Aliberti from Asti, on whose altar there is a gilded copper statue depicting the Madonna Assunta, the work of another from Asti, the sculptor Giovanni Groppa.
