The saddest part about the whole scene is that Serena has this sad, humbled smile on her face. She refuses to frown in front of the man she loves, even when he's telling her that their relationship is over. It's just heart-wrenching.
Watching this scene infuriated me, but after learning WHY Darien did what he did, I understand why he felt the need to break up with her, but she didn’t fully understand why & throughout that entire arc up until the Sleeping spell is broken, she’s spending a good majority of the time trying to figure out why he abruptly ended things with her. I hated the hell he put her through, but according to his nightmare, she was put in danger & it was eating him up inside to know that he couldn’t physically be with her anymore.
Ok if you watch on in the series, you'll see that he's only doing this because he thinks that she'll get hurt if they're together... it's a test from the future darien..
I always felt bad for him and hhate ow Mamoru gets bashed for this. It clearly hurt him too, but he had to be stronger... He was told that she would die if they continued together, so in order to prevent that, he had to break his heart. Look at his pained face...
OMG I dont like the english verison much after getting older cuz it was dumbed down so much but thise scene made me so sad as a kid and i didnt even get it then. Great acting, love this scene makes me wanna cry

I feel bad for usagi. They stay together and dont break up in the original version if that makes you feel a bit better.

The scene after this, where she's crying in the phone booth, actually makes me cry every time.

I'm 41 and I literally just watched it now on DVD and got teary eyed.
However, the original Japanese dub is SO MUCH more emotional.

King Endymion (King Darrien) did not think that whole idea through. If anything would have gone wrong, then Chibiusa (Rini) wouldn't have existed.

They changed all their names in this dub because that's how it worked with English dubs in the 90 and early 2000s
I now hate the English dub versions because of how annoying their voices are in English, even cutting out certain scenes.
