THis is the mood of Bhoopali and The great master Ajoy babu has capturred the mood so well.

In Maharashtra songs were supposed to be sung in Raag Bupaali to awaken god in the early morning. There very beautiful songs in this Raaga which describe the early morning ambience and whenever tha word Bhupali is used instead of Bhup the mood associated with it becomes different. I found the mood in the recital of Bhup by Najakat and Salamat Ali is that of Bhupali but not of Bhoop sung by many others. The mood in this recital is similar that perhaps the style of the two Gharaanaas is similar or same. Where exactly is the difference in the details of the same Raaga that produces this difference. Some expert may be able to explain. An interesting aside The Khayaal (thought) expressed by the Bandish is not necessarily the emotional expression produced by the arrangement of sequence of notes used to pronounce the words of the Bandish. That shows the meaning of a Bandish is meaningless musically and neither the performers nor the listeners care about it. Often it is found that the original words get distorted with time producing meaningless expressions. The Western music listeners often ask a question what is the song? They think what we enjoy in melody is related to the meaning of the song. They don't have the understanding that the thought in music is ( Bhaava) emotional and not expressible in words. It is expressed by sequences of notes in singing. Often the Bhaava is not identifiable with our emotions like love or grudge though the words in Bandishes especially in Thumaaris are about human emotions. Traditionally the musicians are accustomed to believe that a particular Raaga expresses a particular Bhaava corresponding with human desires and disappointment. Listeners also get accustomed to believe in that. But a scientific study is possible by asking listeners no preconceptions to identify the type of emotions they feel and statistical analysis of the data may confirm or reject my conjecture. We can call the Bhaava as abstract and the musical Khayaal also abstract. As an example, I find Bhairavi and Malkauns sung in different ways produce many different Bhaavas though poignancy is prominent.
He took all major styles from all Gharanas and made his own style....that's his speciality.Ajoy Da ko i have seen right from my childhood.He is a gem.i would say he doesn't belong to this Kalyug.He is a pure soul.

Panditji shows the limtless great ocean of music through these 5 swars of Bhupali and creates the spiritual environment with his beautiful rendition which is very uplifting bringing very peaceful feelings to the listeners. His melodious voice is enchanting. I wish I had the opportunity to earn from him this great art of singing. My heartist pranam to Panditji.

Sanjay Shettennavar , Khanapuri is actually the sub-bits for keeping the long Vilambit Laya of any Vilambit Taal. For example, Ektaal has the bol as "Dhin Dhin Dhagi Tirkit Thun Na Kot Ta Dhagi Tirkit Dhin Dha. But if you play the taal in Vilambit, then the time distance between each bol becomes quite long and hence it is a common practice to fill up that time with some extra sub-bits, such as (Dhin - in -dhin -dhintete) actually covers the first Dhin of Ektaal in Vilambit. In this case "in -dhin -dhintete" is called Khanapuri.

Raga Bhupali has got five notes - all shudh notes. This is a light and sweet raga expressing peace joy and calmness. No doubt many film songs has been composed based on this raga. This is my favorite raga. Pandit Ajoy chakravarty has a very sweet deep and resonant voice and it is a treat to hear his exposition of the raga. But he is yet to achieve the level and sophistication of the likes of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali or Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
TO COMPARE USTAD BADE GHULAM ALI KHAN SAHEB,PANDIT AJOY CHAKRABORTY AND MOHAMMAD RAFI SAHEB WITH EACH OTHER IS VERY CHILDISH AND "UNMUSICAL".ALL OF THEM ARE/WERE VERY TALENTED.WE SHOULD TRY TO ENJOY THE MUSIC INSTEAD OF FIGHTING OVER IT.

Bhupali is certainly not a morning raga. And the theory of percieving bhhopali and bhoop different is still something contradictory as most of the connoisseurs tell both as same. Deshkaar is the morning version of Bhoopali.
Debarka Sengupta shouldnt try to find another pandit for comparison.. the likes of pt jasraj,pt bhimsen joshi,acharya jayanta bose,pandita kishori amonkar all of them have their mastered rendition in their own right.. pt ajoy chakraborty has his own place in the fraternity of classical music but a comparison is not realy appreciated..
