I know this is going to be a question that pops up, so I'll just leave this here now. What are reverse operations when talking about an airport? Airports have what are called "flows." And the flow, or traffic pattern, at an airport is determined by the wind. Aircraft always takeoff and land into the wind. This is done for safety reasons. Say an aircraft needs to be going 100 knots on approach, and let's say the wind is blowing directly down the runway at 20 knots. Because the aircraft if moving though the air and isn't touching the ground, when landing into the wind in this scenario, the aircraft only needs to be moving over the ground at 80 knots. Because the wind is already moving over the wings of the aircraft at 20 knots. So you takeoff and land into the wind because you can achieve the lift needed to stay aloft, while moving over the ground at a slower speed. Flip this example and land with the wind at your back, and you now need to be moving over the ground at 120 knots to achieve the same results. So it's safer to operate aircraft into a headwind as it allows them to fly at a slower ground speed. Now, at most airports around the world, the wind can change wildly throughout the year, or even throughout a single 24 hour period. This will cause the "flow" of the airport to switch directions as the winds swing from one direction to another. However, there are some airports, that because of their geographic location, have basically the same exact winds all year. Every day, every week, every month, the winds are constant from one direction. Honolulu is one of those airports. Because of its positions and the Pacific Ocean trade winds, it is very rare for them to have winds blowing from the southwest. Every once in a while though, something called the Kona winds happens. The Kona winds is an unusual weather pattern that overtakes the Hawaiian islands and actually overpowers the typical Pacific trade winds. This causes the airports in Hawaii to abandon their typical flow. Leading them to have "reverse operations." Which, is what you're seeing here. On this particular day, the powerful Pacific Ocean trade winds were being overpowered, causing us to depart towards the west instead of towards the east like you normally would.

Good morning, my dear friend from Bacolod City in the Philippines 🇵🇭 where it's almost 5:30 am Saturday morning. I'm just waking up and having my coffee ☕️ and, as always, watching one of your fantastic creations while I start my Saturday here! I'm really amazed at how quiet the take off and climb out were on the 787! This is my first time seeing you fly from the islands on the Dreamliner. Same during the cruise phase, much quieter! I know the airline acquired, I think, 2 Dreamliners the past few months? Correct me if I'm wrong, please. I haven't hitched a ride on the 787 yet, but hopefully one day soon. But like I said, to me, I can really tell the difference between the other aircraft, A330, B777 vs. the Dreamliner. There is a big difference in engine noise! Anyway, enough said hahaha 😆 sorry I have a bad habit of forgetting to shut my pie hole 😅😅😅 Take care, young man! God bless always 🙏 ❤️ BTW, wow, my first time seeing the "reverse opps" departure! Very cool flying over the other runways on departure! Very cool 😎 😊
The YT Enhancer just upgraded to the 3.0 version, and now, I'm watching your latest HNL takeoff sequence. I think your video looks better on the 3.0. The big news on General Hospital: they killed Dex off. I think we're going to see more people killed off on both GH and on the Bold And The Beautiful very soon. Anyhow, good views and another fine video on your part... keep winning those Olympic Gold Medals.
It's always a rare treat to get reverse ops at HNL. Although I enjoy the great views of Waikiki when taking off the typical direction, this is pretty awesome too with the views of the Reef Runway.
Nice video, as always! A comment though on your video taking: make sure the white balance is fixed. I was able to see significant color shifts throughout the video, especially when the plane takes off.
I'm aware of this, and what you're seeing here is the result after I spent hours and hours editing this video to try to remedy the issue as much as possible. You should see it before the edits... 😂 Believe it or not, I don't ever intend to release a video with color issues like this, but sometimes there's not much you can do about it. Remember, I have been filming flights now for 15+ years and I've been uploading them here on TH-cam for 10 years. And after all that time, my goal is always to have the footage look as natural as possible. So, there's a reason why you rarely see 787 footage on my channel, and it's because of what you're referring to here. 787's do not have traditional windows. Instead of having a regular window with a window shade, they have windows that electronically dim/clear. And as cool as that is, it causes major issues when trying to film. The window never completely clears 100%. And because of this, filming through it is incredibly frustrating and difficult. It's like filming through an annoying green/blue filter. This causes any camera (doesn't matter what type) to constantly try to fix the color ratios. Because it can see that the colors are off. And with the light changing as you turn, or just the sun changing position normally, it causes this to happen at an exaggerated and extremely noticeable rate as the camera tries to boost the orange/red and blue/green. This happens on every single 787 flight thanks to its "innovative" windows 😂. For some reason, Boeing engineers didn't consider people who want to film though them when they designed them... 😂 And this is all on top of the crew being able to control how transparent the windows are to begin with. So... Some 787 flights you can't film at all because the crew decides no one on the flight should have the privilege of looking out the window at all. If you can't tell... I don't like 787's 😂. Anyway, I'm aware of this issue and again, what you're seeing here is actually the result of me spending hours micro editing the video to try to correct it as much as possible. This is as good as it gets with the infuriating 787 windows.
I might have figured it out as your departure wasn't up the usual coastal exit past all the hotels and Waikiki - and then again probably not as its been years since being up on those things. - 👍

@sla31 ahh great explanation man thanks!
Great video!!!! 👍👍
Very new and clean wing.
amazing how quiet the 787 is and that wing flex its insane Great content as always!

Holy moly that was awesome. Hololulu, reverse ops, green water, cloudsurfs, all in the 787?
I honestly have no idea how to top that. Well done! 👍
Awsome seeing this wing again, I flew on this planes inaugural flight and man it is beautiful!!!
Paradise!
Quite spectacular! Really beautiful sun, sea, sky, and cloud patterns!
I'm glad you enjoyed my friend. It's good to hear from you again!
Mais um Belíssimo Conteúdo 😊
Such a quiet airplane. That seat would have been deafening on an ancient 757 or 767 lol. Great video.
Interesting to see another aircraft taxiing from the reef runway during takeoff.

That take off that you got to experience does not happen very often🤙❤️✈️🌴🥥🍍

Great fly! Is your Does your skin on your face gets very dried due to little or no humidity and dry air when flying?

7:13 and 8:33 Traffic.
NICE VIDEO I HOPE YOU WILL MAKE NEPAL AIRLINES TO NEPAL 1 DAY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO THATS FINE!❤
Some day I hope to, but it's not going to be anytime soon my friend. Thanks for watching!
