Sina's first cover of U2 on Thursday Lovely Thursday for Me and You Too...:D
THE SONG - "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a group composition by the Irish rock band U2. It's the first track of their third studio album 'War'. Along with the album's other tracks, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" was recorded at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, Ireland between Sept and Nov 1982. 'War' was released on Feb 28, 1983 and "Sunday Bloody Sunday", as a single, was released, in Germany and the Netherlands on Mar 21, 1983. An alternate track, "Two Hearts Beat as One", was released as a single on that date in the US, UK, and Australia.
'War' reached #1 on the UK albums chart. It was in the top ten in Sweden, Canada and New Zealand. On the US Billboard 200 it peaked at #12 and was also top twenty in Norway and Ireland. Due to its limited release, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" reached #3 in the Netherlands and, while it didn't chart on Billboard's Hot 100, it peaked at #7 on the Main Rock chart.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a political protest song and was initially controversial because it relates the violence of the infamous 1972 and 1920 Bloody Sunday killings. SongFacts states,"The song's anti-hate, anti-sectarian and anti-violence message, performed with the military drumbeat, austere guitar rhythm and passionate melodies, helped establish this as one of U2's signature songs." The band told interviewer Rona Elliot, in 1987, "The lyrics refer to the events of both Bloody Sunday in 1972 and Bloody Sunday in 1920, but are not specifically about either event." SongFacts wrote, "Bono used to introduce this at concerts by saying: "This is not a rebel song."
Bono's views on pop vs rock were revealed in an article by SongFacts - "Pop music often tells you everything is OK, while rock music tells you that it's not OK, but you can change it. There's a defiance in rock music that gives you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Most pop music doesn't make you want to get out of bed, I'm sorry to say. It puts you to sleep."
THE DRUMMER - 'Rolling Stone' called Larry Mullen "The only member of U2 that actually resembles a rock star". Larry started drumming in 1971 at the at the age of 9, under the instruction of Irish drummer Joe Bonnie. He told 'Modern Drummer', in a rare interview, "I wasn’t very good at learning or technique; I didn’t practice much, because I was far more interested in doing my own thing. I wanted to play along with records like Bowie and the Stones. I didn’t want to go through the rudiments-paradiddles and all that stuff, you know."
Initially he was plagued by a poor sense of timekeeping. He overcame that problem. Although he refused the producer's suggestion to use a click track during the recording of 'War', he uses headphones while playing live since some songs utilize a sequencer and click track. He told 'Modern Drummer', "I listen to a click that is triggered by the sequencer. I really enjoy playing to a click. Some people say it takes away from the feel because you can’t hear the rest of the band. I know it can, but I’ve avoided that by doing it differently. I don’t just have the click loud and everything else down very low. I make sure that I can hear the band in my monitors, so I can keep the feel. As a result, I must have the click very, very loud, and after I use it my ears pop, but I won’t sacrifice hearing the band.
THE ICON - Niki is back and all is well!

Thanks Juliet! When a group of Irish(men) get together at least 2 things will generally be true: (1) there will be arguments, and (2) there will be "embellishments" of the truth. Being Irish myself, I'm fairly sure the song is indeed a rebel song. When it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, ...you know the rest. Great info! Thank you very much!!

The complexity increases. While the bass drum sets the main rhythm, a completely different rhythm is played on the snare and cymbal, and this is not even linear, but with variations. Unbelievable what S I N A is doing here. She played the song great and it was great fun watching it. This cover is a masterpiece from our S I N A, the drum genius. Thank you very much for that and also thanks to everyone who was involved in this video.

What I enjoyed about this particularly, is that I learned how a different treatment of the role of a drummer enhances a song; rather than a backbeat with fills during the verses and then a more upfront change for the chorus this was three pattens based around hi-hat and snare with occasional cymbals interchanging for the purposes of each part of the song. Larry Mullens Jnr composed a fantastic track, and you had the ability to allow us to realise that. Great stuff.

Sina, so great you took U2 in for a cover. I'm a big fan of the irish boys and of course also of Larry Mullen Jr. and his generally basic drum play. 😉
I would kindly ask, if you could make a drum cover in near future, with INXS (In Excess)? They are quite overseen, even they was one of the world's biggest bands between 1987-1992. They played especially a huge sold out gig on the old (now demolished) Wembley Stadium in july 1991. Many young people, especially girls, in your age was big fans of them, especially Michael Hutchence, there in my opinions was one of the best lead singers in the world from mid 80's to his tragic death on 22nd November 1997.
Notice when you watch live videos of INXS, that he was very much inspired by Jim Morrison and his way of performance, even he also had his really own style. 😎
They have made many great songs and Jon Farriss is also a great drummer, quite overseen as well and deserve some aknowledge, if you ask me. He was the first real drummer, that inspired me and who I gave my presence to, among many other great drummers. 😎
I will post some songs of my favourites, I find great to maybe try to play. You could take a look, if you are interested. 🙂
'Baby Don't Cry': A great song, recorded live (not the video) with philharmonic orchestra. From ' Welcome to Wherever You Are' (1992). - th-cam.com/video/znWwKSn-xTY/w-d-xo.html
'Listen Like Thieves', from the album with same title released 1985: Full of life in the drum play. Notice, that Jon Farriss used two or three roto toms in the song. It's not difficult to notice with the practiced ears. 😉 - th-cam.com/video/znWwKSn-xTY/w-d-xo.html
'The Stairs': My absolute favourite by the band, expecially the lyrics are some of the greatest poetry I've heard. The drums have something big in the sound from the production, I can't explain. But I love to turn back and listen it over again and again. The album 'X' is a good mix between 80's and the 90's sound, because it was released in 1990 and that decade started a new definition on how rock music would sound. Well, I love it into my skin and bone. 😎 - th-cam.com/video/-9FOYTwxfcU/w-d-xo.html
At last I will send a video, filmed by a guy standing next to Jon Farriss. It's from the summer 2003 (the year I first time saw INXS out of total three), where INXS tried to come back with another singer. His name is Jon Stevens, was original member of a Australian rock band called Noiseworks (they're cool). Today Jon Stevens are making solo material and recently released a record together with David A. Stewart (yes, that guy from Eurythmics). INXS have had three different singers after Michael Hutchence before they retired. Well, enough of my nerdy bullshit, here is the video recorded by a guy standing next to Jon Fariss, his nice Pearl drum set and his monitor. 😉 - th-cam.com/video/Wad6Ti7XjnM/w-d-xo.html
    That's all from me.
I'm looking forward to next video, Sina. 😃✌️😎

Well done girl. And in this particular case I can honestly say that critically because like I told you years ago, back in high school I had a best friend like you who is a multi-instrument musician and drums are his go to instrument like you and he played this song like crazy. I can't tell you how many times I heard him play it. Larry Mullen and Stewart Copeland were his to favorite drummers and he did all their songs. Occasionally I was his drum tech and like I said before he loved playing this song so I a VERY familiar with it. The reason he likes it so much is because it doesn't have a conventional beat to it. It is more of an off beat play.
If I remember correctly I might have suggested this song to you years ago because of that reason and that you said you to be challenged with song playing.
I'm gonna post this on my FB and tag him to it so he can see this also.

Offen . Ich habe das Lied früher nie wirklich gemocht , noch mag ich es heute , aber es hat meine Jugend geprägt und war in jeder Disco zu hören . Persönlich gefiel mir " New Years Day " immer besser als " Sunday Bloody Sunday " .
