To be honest the competition could have gone either way and both are deserving of an Olympic medal. One ironic feature of this rivalry is that both were most successful on the international stage against each other without the red backpatch and title of world champion. After Abe‘s initial success as World Champion he first lost to Maruyama in Osaka and afterwards lost his title of world champion in Tokyo. However after that loss that could have been the „final blow“ to end the rivalry Abe-now without his title- turned the trend and won as we all know the following two matches. In my opinion this shows that titles are won on one single day and on the next day there can already be someone who is better than you.
Now All became history with abe siblings reached the top on same day. It’s still sad to know Maruyama is exactly 4 years older than Abe. That would be better for us tenri duo fans if abe would wait for Paris 2024. But it is what it is. Abe didn’t disappoint the country, that’s something at least maruyama would feel better about his situation. Keep fighting Maru ! 31 is not too late and u will sure have your senpai breaking the ceiling with u!!
I think/thought the same as you. However, now that Ono has retired from competition at the age of 30, I don't know how this can affect Maruyama on a mental level.
