i think the monters may be a little real, like a bear, but everyone is going insane due to paranoia, starvation and food poisoning from seal meat and improperly sealed cans
I found the show one of the best ever made for TV. I wouldnt compare it to Chernobyl which was extremely lazy both in terms of writing and narrative. I am a chemist so I was frustrated to no end from the science in it also. I was also around in 86 and I know how bad the show's depiction of the actual feel of the event was. The terror, on the other hand, was extremely respectful to the era. Everything was spot on. They even manage to include a creature/demon without it feeling out of place..
To clear up something I got wrong - Around 07:30, where I talk about the missions sent by the Royal Navy after the Franklin expedition, I focus on them wanting to salvage the equipment. In reality, Lady Franklin and the families of the ship's crew had pressured the government to act, hoping to rescue crewmen who may have survived and after finding survivors was unlikely, still try to find evidence of what had happened. The equipment would have been too damaged to be of value after such exposure anyway. Thanks to /u/FistOfTheWorstMen on Reddit for clearing this up.
