Smash Mouth's Greg Camp On Allstar, Film/TV Music, Songwriting, and Supergroups

Raised in San Jose, Greg Camp was deeply rooted in the California rock scene long before he became a household name. As a musician in various bands throughout the 1980s, Greg sharpened his musical chops until a fateful encounter with Steve Harwell and Kevin Coleman led to the formation of Smash Mouth. Initially hesitant, Greg was convinced to take a look at their songs-and the rest, as they say, is history.
As the founding guitarist and primary songwriter for Smash Mouth, Greg penned the band’s biggest hits, including "Walkin' on the Sun," "All Star," and "Then the Morning Comes." His songwriting genius earned him numerous accolades, including multiple BMI Multi-Platinum Pop Awards and a BMI Urban Award for his work on Pharrell Williams and N.O.R.E.'s "Nothin." Greg’s contributions helped the band achieve multi-platinum status, with worldwide record sales exceeding 15 million.
Beyond Smash Mouth, Greg’s talents extended into the world of film and television. His music has been featured in over 40 films, more than 2,600 episodic television shows, and 1,600+ commercials, making him a sought-after sync composer and producer. After leaving Smash Mouth in 2008, Greg released his solo album, Defektor, which was praised for its fusion of vintage guitar tones, '60s frat-rock hooks, and cinematic soundscapes.
Despite stepping away from Smash Mouth, Greg occasionally rejoined the band for special performances, while continuing to make waves in the industry. In 2023, he co-founded The Defiant, a new band featuring members of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Offspring, Street Dogs, and The Briggs. Their debut album, released in October 2023, marks another exciting chapter in Greg’s storied career.
