    Cut back most of the leaves. Air circulates better, bees get to the blossums easier but most of all sun light gets in. Solved my problem.

    Posted this video on a gardening group I’m on after someone was sure that their blossom and rot was not due to poor pollination. I had no idea that zucchini and squash could also have the same problem as tomatoes!

    We have no pollinators. We are organic, but farmers around me use round up. My heart greaves for the death of insects, frogs, beetles etc. We have had "1" lightening bug, where back in the 70's there were thousands. My yard is loaded with different kinds of clover, but there are NO bees. I have planted flowers to try and bring them in but nothing.

    Any advice on how to hand pollinate better? How do I know that I deposited all the male pollen correctly?🤷🏻‍♀️ I have no clue of what I'm doing, please help🤦

      Maria, thanks for your comments, this is a great question. Luckily University of Florida has a great fact-sheet on hand pollinating squash and corn in small gardens, check out this link to learn all the details of hand pollination edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdf/HS/HS398/HS398-5006068.pdf.

    I'm confused by the term "bad pollination". What I thought was there can only be one pollen that pollinates so I dont see how there's varying degrees of pollination unless of course there is a need for 1 pollen on each female organ. So does squash require each female bit (theres 4 or 5 I believe) or what?

    • @MUIPM
      @MUIPM  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Plants have developed reproductive features to increase their probability of survival and spread of their genetic material in nature. The ovary of a cucurbit flower (and many other annual vegetables) has many ovules that develop into seeds when fertilized/pollinated, and therefore many seeds develop in a fruit. The female flowers are receptive for one morning when open, so the presence of one ovary containing many ovules increases the chance of some being pollinated/fertilized. Therefore, several visits of pollinating insects (bees) carrying pollen are necessary while the female flower is receptive to fertilize all/most ovules. On cloudy/rainy days insects are less/not active so the chances of flowers being pollinated are reduced resulting in poor pollination, misshapen fruits, or simply not pollinated (dropped, rotten). Hope this helps understand poor pollination.

      @@MUIPM Yes. Thank you. From what I gather you're saying, you need pollen on each ovule, which can mean several pollen for each ovary or flower.

    I see ants in mine and I have no bees can they polinate fruit?

    • @juancabrera3495
      @juancabrera3495 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ants are not pollinators by nature. If they happen to walk across the pollen and then walk across the female flower, they could pollinate the flower. Ants generally indicate aphids are on the plants. Ants are after the aphids and inadvertently can cause damage to the flowers or fruit.

      I did it with buttersquash. It grew in a bed I did not yet fill with dirt but I used for throwing kitchen scraps and grass clippings. Some butter squash seeds made it to plants so i transplanted them (6 plants in total). At first I thought They are dying but after a week they really took off and filled the bed!

      But there's more than 1 reason for a zucchini plant to not have access to enough calcium. There could not be enough calcium in the soil. It could also be not consistent enough water which is what allows the roots to absorb the calcium in the soil, or if there's too much water too often that inhibits the roots from absorbing the calcium in the soil.

    I don't like waste. When the fungus makes my fruit soft and mushy, I simply pick them and place them in an electric blender, Add a little ice cream and Coca Cola and then blend them together to make nice milk shakes. If you still happen to taste the traces of fuzzy mold, simply add more sugar or just dump it in the compost.
