  • Part 2 of my Upset journey. In this video I focus on the practical side of upsetting, and why there is a benefit to adding material to the end of your work. Rather than a decorative element, this will show you a few processes where upsetting is a vital step, including making diamond points, and forming scarfs for fire welding (forge welding).
As ever, please leave any feedback or questions in the comments, I'm always happy to help with things if I can.
    Thanks for watching,
    Tom

Thanks again for sharing this. I really liked the diamond point, very cool. So for me it is back out to the forge and practice, practice, etc..........................

Exactly!! It's not magic, I've just been doing it for years, and with the extra benefit of making products which are repetitive, including this diamond point, I can make them with my eyes closed. Practice is all you need.

@@TomFellBlacksmith I was lucky enough to have been taught smithing years ago "hands on". One of the things that smith taught me was how to make leaves. Also told me, "make a leaf, look at it to see what's wrong with it, throw it in a 5 gallon bucket and do it again and fix what was wrong with the next one you make". I asked him what to do once the bucket was full? He said "dump it out and start all over". So for the first couple of years I made leaf after leaf after leaf, well I also made tongs, chisels, tools, etc........but you get the picture. Up until a few weeks ago when I had commented on one of your videos and you had said to "practice".......I had forgotten the sage words of my teacher. Thanks for the reminder.

He's right, but I'd say you also need a bit of balance in there. I'd get bored very quickly!

@@TomFellBlacksmith Agreed, I would always try to find different ways to make them. 2 sided tapers, 4 sided, haven't tried round like I saw on one of your posts yet, how big, how small, how fast, fewest heats, etc.......I think what he was trying to say was to challenge oneself and not get stuck in just one way of doing things. Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago. However, to this day, I always make at least one leaf whenever I forge.

Another great video. Boy that is a nice scarf. I will have to practice these. I stink at making scarfs. Thanks!
