Beer traps work very well in my experience. Just make sure you don't forget to check your trap regularly or it will smell really bad. When I say really bad, I mean REALLY BAD. I almost threw up when I had to clear up after leaving it too long.
i put aside a couple of bottles of homebrew for traps, as it's the yeast that drives them crazy; as i'm brewing stout now i will save the sediment and store it in the fridge for daily use, that will deprive the slimy critters of precious beer (if it works that is, lol)
the money and time you save by not including a rain lid for just rainy days, out weighs the abound of slugs you catch when it actually rains. besides if you intend to set it and forget it, you are doing it wrong.
Besides, beer cans are cheap. It's not like you have to use quality beer and even if you don't drink you likely know someone near you who does whom you could scavenge some cans from. You can also use cheap beer (who cares if the slugs have a hangover?). Also, since you're using only 1/3 of the can, you only need 1 can of beer for every 3 traps. Use the cans you collect from other people (or from your own drinking) for the other two traps. A six pack of beer will easily become 18 slug traps!
I feel kind of sorry killing them but when they are more than what's needed sometimes you have to either value your garden or value the slugs lives, This is the more humane choice. Get drunk and then die, What a way to go.

I made one out of a plastic 2 liter coke bottle and just stood it up. It took about 30 seconds and worked fine...
