@@RolandKaufmann lens mount issue where lenses can’t be locked into position. Nikon have identified those affected by serial number. Recall therefore is for those with relevant serial numbers.
Preordered it 3 minutes after announcement, been waiting for it for ages like so many others. The short 70 degree zoom rotation is going to make this an absolute dream for people who photograph things that fly- birds or aircraft. Enormous improvement in usability over the external zoom 200-500 or my Tamron 150-600. The price was a bit of a shock, a very pleasant one.
Nikon is really ahead and clearly are the class leaders who cater for us action and wildlife shooters. Looking forward to seeing your combo review with Nikkon Z6iii in the coming months.
Yes so many people have been waiting for it but I wasn’t one of them until I saw it this morning. Now I find myself wanting it especially because of the price. You can’t go wrong buying it IMO. Thanks Matt.
Same here, but it has to wait. It is a very exciting lens. There is a lot of want here. Nikon is doing a great job with the lenses. After all the bashing (not from our community, I know) they deserve some credit. Unfortunately I still only can spend money once. 😢😂
The other added bonus of the internal zoom, aside from the weather sealing as you mentioned, is that the balance doesn't change in your hand (or on a tripod) as you zoom.
Nikon are truly knocking it out of the park. I’m absolutely astounded how good these new lenses are and they just keep getting better. Never before have we had a selection of consumer 2.8s to run along the side of the s line lenses but now have a super zoom runs from 180-600 and all internal focusing. Truly outstanding 👏👏 honesty this is great and there is something for everyone.
I love that it’s internal zoom. Becoming so infrequent today, but I still get nervous when using any lens that extends and contracts in wet or dusty environments, regardless of how well the vendor claims it’s sealed. I’d be more comfortable with this lens in those conditions than my 24-120 S lens for this reason alone.
Using my much loved 24-200 in light drizzle(we get lots of that in my neck of the woods of BC Canada) I have to frequently mop up the droplets before retracting the zoom just as a precaution
this is the outdoor lens for me. Short throw zoom, internal mechanism, reasonable price, Nikon quality. Not the 200-500 F, not a prime, not 100-400 w/telextenders, not a house down payment for a larger aperture. My Z system is coming along nicely! Ted, Ps really enjoy your low light, night time walk abouts.
Another great update Matt. Nikon has done it again. They surprised us with a new spec lens! Great job Nikon. I am sure this lens will be a sell out ! And yes, I pre ordered right away !
This is the lens I've been asking you and others about when it was coming out. I've been waiting for it ever since I learned it was on the roadmap. I placed my order the morning it came out.
i remember being a sales lead when the 200-500 came out and just selling tons of them cus they made so much sense. this new one with such a short throw/internal zoom/ighter weight/more range PLUS not needing an adapter for the old tamron/sigma 150-600s that most people i can see getting this lens currently own - this lens is a no brainer period. nikon has seriously hit the mark with this.
I have the Nikon Z6II and I have heard that the AF does not work as well in some situations but I plan on getting this lens to take pictures of the moon and other situations where I will need a zoom lens. Since I don't have a zoom lens for the Z-mount I am excited for this one!
I think this lens was designed well and I agree from the images I have seen it is very sharp with great bokeh! I am looking for flexible for AirShows and BIF on composition. Makos I believe Nikon went with 180 -600 range to keep buyers from going to other brands! It looks like a hit!!!
Hi Matt. I kind of surprised myself today. I had planned on saving my pennies up for buying the Nikon Z 100-400mm f5-6.3 lens. After listening to Ricci's first look video, I put in a pre-order for the Z 180-600mm f5.6-6.3. I decided that it made more sense for my use case. My longest Z lens is the Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8. I really like having the f2.8 for when I'm shooting dog shows indoors. The 100-400 was never going to be an indoors lens for me. I currently own the Sigma 100-400mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary lens. It's not in the same class as the Nikon Z 100-400mm, but it's really very nice, reasonably lightweight and I've been able to capture some beautiful images with it. I was going to trade the Sigma for the Nikon Z 100-400mm, but now I'm going to keep the Sigma, because it fills a void (and you probably would get 1/3 of the value on trade-in), and add the new Z 180-600mm. At about $1000 less here in the States, the Z 180-600mm looks to offer tremendous value.
I was impressed the Z8 appeared to cop a bit of 'eye detect' as the dog was running away from the camera. Lens looks fantastic, both in size and price.
As hobbyist photographer and owner of the Z50. At this time I can't justify buying this lens, not because I don't thinks this is a fantastic lens at very affordable price, but because of poor AF of my Z50. If you notice including you, everyone who's review this new lens has coupled the lens with either a Z8 or Z9 (not affordable for us hobbyist). Nikon again has introduce an fantastic and affordable lens, but doesn't offer a mid-range or APSC camera with similar AF to the Z8 or Z9 to couple with this lens. So for us hobbyist photographer we continue to envy (I least I do) the Canon and Sony users who address the hobbyist photographer with their affordable mid-range and APSC cameras.
Excellent first look Matt! Envious you got/get to play with what looks like a super adaptable lens. Yeah, great that it's an IF lens. This is gonna be another hot cake from Nikon.
Hello Matt, Now i see where the 20-189mm come into the line up. This is a very well priced bit of kit that a am sure will sell like hot cakes. I know its not thir S line but the reach and with teleconverters to. Keep well, keep safe and just enjoy the amazing Nikon line up as it just gets better and better.
I’m sticking with 100-400mm S class, if I need more reach will use TC. I would be interested in comparing image quality of those two new lenses compared to 100-400 mm S. Thanks Matt! Good video!
I think it will make a good wildlife lens that doesn't break the bank. I like the internal zoom, but wish Nikon had put a vr switch on the lens body, instead of having to go into the camera menu to turn vr on/off. I think this lens will be a big seller for Nikon.
having never turned off the VR on my 200-500 cus its always been hand held its not a bug deal for me but I'm guessing that you could easily create a scene 1/2/3 or a/b/c that lets you toggle handheld vs tripod vr settings on the fly instead of menu diving =)
Thanks Matt for your review. Ordered. 😁😁 This lens was on my wish list. The extension to 180mm, all internal adjustment and lighter weight than the 200-500 lens are convincing arguments. I'm not worried about the image quality. For me, the future lens for athletics and football photography.
Got tired of waiting for this lens so got a Megadap 211 Z to E adapter and Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3. They have performed flawlessly on my Z9. What I am interested in a comparison of IQ between the two lenses.
I've been waiting on this to decide if the native Nikon would be better than an adapted sigma or tamron F mount...and for the price I'm absolutely getting this lens. Great first look, thanks!
THIS is THE lens I have been waiting for!! I own a lot of Z lenses and the Z 9 and now the Z 8. I have waited for this lens for a couple of years. I still use the 200-500 with the D7500 and am still using it for long shots. The Z 8 is the one I use the most now with the 400- f 4.5 lens and I started using that lens with the 1.4 TC but I stopped using that as some images were not quite what I desired. I would have STARTED with the 180-600 FIRST if I could have. The 100-400 is quite useful as it does go down to 100mm when needed.
I have the Nikon Z50 with a Nikon 180-600mm lens and that works great for my use. The lens is very sharp. I shoot in JPEG medium only. I don’t need to edit anything. I got my lens on eBay for $1600. My combination was worth the money. Great video. ❤❤❤
I have looked at the MTF chart. It’s a capable and fairly sharp lens with nice bokeh! (I believe from my reading). I have a big 500 prime, but I WILLadd the 180-600 because I do need a zoom lens as a companion for the fast (heavy) prime. Sometimes it’s about weight, flexibility and hand holdability. From what I have seen of this new Nikon lens so far, it’s a no-brainer for sports, wildlife etc.
Wasn't going to pull the trigger on this lens as i have really decent long coverage with the 100-400 and 800pf .. but the sub 5lbs, internal zoom, 70deg throw, and coming in 500$ cheaper then I expected sold me... 😅😅
Gotta have it Matt! Now have the Sigma 150-600 lens and love it. But, the extension is a pain, but it’s Very Sharp. This new Nikon lens and a Z8 will be much better protected, lighter than my Z9 and more usable on my walks through the Alaska Woods and Wilderness. Anxious to see the comparison of the Nikon, Sigma and Sony!!!
Love your content Matt. One small suggestion: get rid of the level in your EVF when filming w Ninja. You're handheld and moving around, of course it's not going to be level - but that big floating white bar is a bit distracting from the great wildlife.
can't wait to get this lens! The only concern is when does it go past 5.6? If it goes beyond 5.6 after 500, it would be perfect. @MattIrwinPhotography did you get a chance to see when it goes to varying focal lengths?
I've already put a deposit on one! Aviation photographer who has moved from D850 200-500mm to Z8, FTZ II with 200-500mm. I can't wait to see the results. Especially like the 70° zoom, vs three turns on 200-500mm.
Wait - $1700 USD??? Yes - for sure - getting this for my next wildlife trip - especially if it pairs well with the 1.4x and/or 2x converters. Matt or Ricci - please try it with the converters!
Excellent intro to this awesome 180-600 lens, Matt! 2 questions please...At f/8, can you really see a major difference in sharpness between it and the Nikkor Z 100-400 S? And, who sells an Arca-Swiss compatible foot plate? (I still can't understand why Nikon's telephoto collars/feet are not Arca-Swiss compatible?! Doesn't every serious photographer use Arca-Swiss compatible gear, i.e., ball heads, pan-tilt, gimbal, etc.?) Thank you sir.
This looks like an amazing lens from what I have seen, heard and read. I really like the fact it is an internal zoom and weather sealed. Weather sealing on an internal zooming camera just ensures that you don’t deal with internal dust much the less moisture. One thing I will be interested in seeing is how it handles teleconverters. A 2 times teleconverter on a f/6.3 lens really means you have a lens that will require bright sunny days from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM brightness so when those saying on an APS C camera you have 1800mm of reach. Oh yah only on the brightest days with manual focus. I have tried that on a Tamron 150-600 f5-6.3 and the results are not flattering. I will wait to see more on that combination . However, having said that, I really think Nikon is really on their game recently and those naysayers who just a couple of years ago had been saying “Nikon is dead”. Well I think that it has been proven that they were digging a grave when the body is full of life. This will likely be a excellent lens for the masses of wildlife and sport shooters who don’t have deep pockets for expensive primes but still want a quality hand holdable lens. Thanks so much for your early review. I am looking forward to more in-depth hands on reviews in the future when this lens has been in the field for awhile.
I got the Z8 though I didn't;t really need to - I loved my Z6 as it suited my shooting er style (? what style? right, moving on...) and the 200-600 has been on my wish list forever! It's why I have the 2x converter with the gorgeous z70-200 as a stop-gap. I'm not disappointed.. and it's ordered! Aug delivery 🙏. Thanks Matt
Hi Matt, not for now. There is only so much that I can cram into my travel bag. I have just got my Z8 camera and awesome 400/4.5 S lens! I love the function key crop to 560mm. We will be on flights out of Ottawa to Brisbane November 4th. I will also include a Z6 with 24-120mm lens, black Zfc with other lenses T.B.D. We will be in Melbourne for four nights on the 13th. Hopefully booking in at the new Meriton suites. A question for you. If you only had four nights in Melbourne, what would be on your to do list? I would like to do a night photography tour. If you only had one lens, which lens would you choose for you night photography tour of Melbourne?
Thanks Matt, great video as always. I pre-ordered the 180-600 this morning, in many ways with internal zoom etc, seems more S-line than non-S to me, better than I expected. Now I’m thinking about cases, given this will come with Nikon’s usual joke of a lens pouch. Perhaps you could look at some suitable case options in your follow up piece on this lens. Thanks, and looking forward to you joining Kon & Becky on their GoW livestream this Friday. Planning to order Z8 from them in a month or so.
Thank u for this video …. Im waiting for my copy of the lens . Question tho - what differentiates it from the S lens … what makes this not an “S” lens …? Thank u kindly ! 😊
Pre-ordered the Z8 the day it was announced and got it the day it was released… just pre-ordered this lens… hopefully I’ll get it the day it’s released as well! Can you say “Nikon, take my money!”
Hi Matt. is it possible for you to make a video on Nikon Z5 with Z 180-600mm..?? There is no news on launch of Nikon Z5ii or Nikon Z6 iii. So People might be thinking of buying this combo.. so that video might help for people about buying this combo.
Hi Matt I like the range but how does it compare to the older 200-400 F4 pro lens as in dx that’s also a 600 but at f4. And second hand now the same price.
i own the sigma 150-600mm F mount with a Z50 the Focus is really slow but i dont know if its the lens the body or both together maybe i try this one in a camera shop
I use sigma 60-600 on cameras z50 and z6_2. On 6_2, autofocus works much more confidently, but more often you have to shoot at z50 because of the extra zoom.
I believe this lens is a dealbreaker for Nikon. Perhaps this new 180-600mm going to convince a lot of F mount users to finally jump on the mirrorless wagon. I would love a z8 combo with this lens. Probably the only lens which is missing from the lineup is a true successor of the 300mm F2.8 VR II.
Would love to see a comparison on a Z9or Z8 with this lens and the ASF 500PF with FTZII. that is what Im shooting now. I hope to eventually swap all of my f mounts for Z . Selling my AFS lenses slowly as Z equivalents are rolled out...
Finnaly it is here and it seems great from what I have seen on youtube. Maybe it is late because Sony has an awesome 200-600 and Nikon worked hard to be as good or better. The Nikon is 20% more expensive than the Sony here in Sweden but it is brand new. I think I will get one.
This is obviously a real step up for Nikon in this range and price point. The only thing though is when Nikon had the 200-500 f/5.6 and reviewed it against the equivalent 150-600 f/5-6.3 Sigma or Tamron that there was a huge thing made of the 5 to 6.3 variable f stop. Now that Nikon has a variable f stop that this is played down as only 1/3 of an f stop difference. No big deal now but a very big deal in reviews before. Well, which is it..big deal or not. I said it then and again now. Not a real problem for most shooters using this type of lens. Shouldn’t have been a big deal before either. Nice initial review though. Likely a huge seller for Nikon Z users for sure. By the way I have used the previous versions of these lenses in the rain, dust etc without issue. I was a lot more confident with the Tamron 150-600 G2 as it was weather sealed though. Still internal zooming is a very nice feature and surely welcome.
Nikon absolutely killing it with the bodies and lenses lately. Absolutely game changing stuff 🙌🏼. Super exciting to be in the Z ecosystem right now!
agreed! exciting stuff

Hey Matt great first look
can we get Matt’s freeze face on a t-shirt ? 🤣
Love your content Matt. One small suggestion: get rid of the level in your EVF when filming w Ninja. You're handheld and moving around, of course it's not going to be level - but that big floating white bar is a bit distracting from the great wildlife.
Hi Matt! I really like your videos. I'm just on 2:21 of this video and thought I'd say hello. Already made up my mind. This is my next lens.
can't wait to get this lens! The only concern is when does it go past 5.6? If it goes beyond 5.6 after 500, it would be perfect. @MattIrwinPhotography did you get a chance to see when it goes to varying focal lengths?
It is 500mm @ F6
It is F6 beginning at 300mm. F6.3 past 500mm.
@@mluu83 yes it changes180-300, 300-500, 500-600
I've already put a deposit on one! Aviation photographer who has moved from D850 200-500mm to Z8, FTZ II with 200-500mm. I can't wait to see the results. Especially like the 70° zoom, vs three turns on 200-500mm.
Wait - $1700 USD??? Yes - for sure - getting this for my next wildlife trip - especially if it pairs well with the 1.4x and/or 2x converters. Matt or Ricci - please try it with the converters!
Would love to get one! One step at a time.
Your audio is awesome what did you use
Ordered selling the 200-500 now
Thank u for this video …. Im waiting for my copy of the lens . Question tho - what differentiates it from the S lens … what makes this not an “S” lens …? Thank u kindly ! 😊
My Birthday month… my birthday present to me
Pre-ordered the Z8 the day it was announced and got it the day it was released… just pre-ordered this lens… hopefully I’ll get it the day it’s released as well! Can you say “Nikon, take my money!”
Dare I say that this is probably the first Nikon variable aperture zoom lens with internal zoom?
Nice video Matt, I am trying to decide either to get this lens or 100-400mm or 400mm 4.5. What would you recommend? I already 800mm PF 6.3
Hi Matt. is it possible for you to make a video on Nikon Z5 with Z 180-600mm..?? There is no news on launch of Nikon Z5ii or Nikon Z6 iii. So People might be thinking of buying this combo.. so that video might help for people about buying this combo.
Shall have to wait until August for this as a replacement for my 200-500.
Have you tried it with the 2xTC Matt ?
Someone should tell Nikon about Arca Swiss plates for photography!
Have you tried the 180 -600 on the Z50 camera body? I’d like to know your thoughts on this combination.
Going to get one 😊 been waiting
Hi Matt I like the range but how does it compare to the older 200-400 F4 pro lens as in dx that’s also a 600 but at f4. And second hand now the same price.
i own the sigma 150-600mm F mount with a Z50 the Focus is really slow but i dont know if its the lens the body or both together maybe i try this one in a camera shop
I use sigma 60-600 on cameras z50 and z6_2. On 6_2, autofocus works much more confidently, but more often you have to shoot at z50 because of the extra zoom.
tomorrow my package will arrive with the Z 180-600❤❤
Congratulations
Ricci did a comparison on his channel, the 500PF was sharper. I'm also shooting the Z8 with the 500PF and not looking to change any time soon.
Finnaly it is here and it seems great from what I have seen on youtube. Maybe it is late because Sony has an awesome 200-600 and Nikon worked hard to be as good or better. The Nikon is 20% more expensive than the Sony here in Sweden but it is brand new. I think I will get one.
Love to see the stabilization shown like this, good job, pretty jerky in the dog part though
I will probably get this lens.
Will be great with the Z90 cropped sensor 😊
I am licking my chops over this lens, but it will have to wait. The 180-600mm is what I want, but the 70-180mm 2.8 is what I need for my photoshoots.
I shoot with Z50 have you tried the lens with DX?
The stabilisation is insanely good at 600mm.
