Great review❤ Honest and to the point. Thx for mentioning our testing method.
Thank you for watching! You guys set the standard for helmet testing!
Yep, the visor closes for good, at around 100 kmph, you’ll love it when you get a huge bug or a rock, pretty common on Italian roads… I’m actually using that helmet since 6 months and it’s the best modular I’ve owned so far…
I can highly recommend this one! The only thing is: Go to the shop and try it. Sadly, my size is a bit loose thanks to it got bumped up to a bigger shell size. It is not as snug as the other HJC helmet with the same size with a smaller shell size, and a size smaller doesn't fit me well.
Check it for yourself, I might be wrong on this one, since this is subjective.
The review is just fire!
I'll go buy it tomorrow!
Good luck!
I just recently bought a left over RPHA 90, the previous model. It is the quietest helmet I have owned to date, including, Nolans, Shoeis, and Schuberths. The Shoeis were horrible as far as wind noise went and had build quality issues. The Schuberth and the Nolans were fairly equal as far as noise goes. The Nolans have a lot of great features that other helments don't have. There is a detent so that the visor can be held open at just a crack. Helps with ventilation and the noise is slightly reduced with it open it would probably help with the HJC as well if it would do that. The Nolans have a double latch on the chin bar, extra in the event of a crash. I do not like the D rings on my 90, the ratch strap on the 91 would be a big plus for me. Also the chin bar on the Nolans have an eliptical hinge so it stays very close to the shell when open, limiting drag when open . Something else HJC could look into. To date the Nolans have been my favorite helmets but the HJC has moved into first place. I got mine for half price, probably the only reason I bought it. Too bad I can't take a helmet out on the road prior to purchase. I would like to try the 91 to see if it is improved enough over the 90 to justify purchase. Road tests are just not allowed. I would have brought the Neotech ll back after one block if I could have. I put it in the saddle bag and rode home in my beatup old Nolan.
Very well put together review ! Thank you, I was considering this helmets for touring and now I am going to buy it :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great review. You’re the only reviewer I’ve seen who mentions the visor coming down at speed, even with 2 different motos.
I wonder if there is some hack to strengthen that area. I usually only open the visor at a stop but if I choose to keep it open I don’t want it flipping down by itself as you demonstrated.
Thanks also for reviewing how the helmet performs with the chin bar up at speed.
Keep up the good work. I learned a lot from this vid
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. I've been looking for a way to do exactly that. If I find it I'll def let you know. Still a great helmet all around
I have that problem with mine as well. I have sent emails to HJC and so far they have only responded that they sent to quality control. Not impressed
To fix this it looks like they just need to deepen the top notch slightly on the mechanisms on each side or have stronger springs in the mechanism.
I am almost to the point where I will be doing it myself.
At this moment I would not recommend this helmet until they address and fix this issue
@@WeRide2 Yeah, the shield issue is a deal breaker for me. Thanks for the review.
Saw a video where a woman put a rubber o ring round the visor mechanism on a Schuberth to stop it snapping closed. Pretty sure it was a 32x2mm o ring. Could have been 35x2.
I think for full face helmet visor should go down from certain speed if you want to pass safety certification. My rpha 90 and shoei neotec does the same.
Great review - best I have watched - I am going to purchase one
Thank you!!
My RPHA 90 visor closes as well at 60mph and I don’t think that it is bad, it is even safety feature to close visor at such speeds 😉
That's a good way to put a positive spin on it LOL. Stay safe!
I have this issue with a competitor, the Schuberth C5, and I have heard about the “safety feature” aspects. As a rider on bikes with windshields that are tall enough to keep the bugs and rocks out of my face, I find that they also keep the wind out of the vents and riding with the face shield up can be useful. I do not agree with it being a safety feature. As this helmet break in, it will get to the point where the face shield will barely stay open in a mild breeze. I guess we can always take the face shields completely off.
Thank you for real world test 👏🙌
Not just from a desk showing gadgets lol
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
that's one of the best reviews of this helmet I've seen so far
Thanks for watching!
Hey, what did you use for voice recording? That integrated comms system or did you have a mic installed? The sound quality is pretty good, having in mind the speed and open lid.
I used the Rode Wireless Go 2 mic kit.
@@WeRide2 thank you
I wonder how well the cardo packtalk edge fits on the side?. I have been eyeing this for my next helmet
Great information awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for that real time review!
Now i am getting one ☝️ 😅
I also think its cool that visor shuts at 60 …
Thank you
Unless they changed it, the sun visor is not made to be ridden by itself; it is not impact resistant. You would need separate goggles to do that. I always ride with my 90S with shield down. With chin bar up it is not an issue.
Great review, especially the on bike testing. How do you like it in stop and go traffic in the Florida heat during the summer time?
I like it like I like the flu LOL. It's not that bad most of the time unless you're wearing shorts.
Nice review bro. I'm in Springs too. Maybe I'll run into you at some point.
Sounds good!
Great review thanks ! Quick question, If ventilation is good, do you consider an important issue that the visor keeps coming down?
Not so much on a modular, i think that acquitted it from being a bigger issue overall. It'll be fine for some riders depending on what and how they ride.
Good review
Thanks!
Visor closing at 60mph could be a deal breaker for me. I wonder why manufacturers don't have a better detent system to hold the shield more firm. They should offer a manual lock of some sort.
Agreed, that's actually what I like most about the Ruroc. You can hit almost 100 and that visor is staying where you put it.
I had that Visor problem on a previous helmet and it was annoying even when I only wanted it open just briefly. Maybe a C 5 helmet instead.
Might have to try that one as well..
Did you ever do a video about putting the Cardo in the RPHA 91?
Not yet, but I'm working on a video for the helmet in general that includes going over the Cardo install.
I have the LS2 Advent X and I moto-vlog using a cheap Panda mic. The wind noise is so loud I can't hear myself when talking. Is the HJC quite than the LS2 or is it because of my cheap mic?
I have a panda mic i use as well in one of my helmets, I think it works good, but I'm using it on a full face helmet. Do you have a windsock on the mic by chance? I don't have experience with the Advent X yet but I will say the HJC is quieter than my LS2 Valiant 2.
Great review, looking for a quieter helmet, but I typically ride with the visor cracked (maybe because my current helmet has poor ventilation)…so on this helmet riding with a slight crack is not possible
It's possible, it depends on what speed you're going and the height windshield if you have one on your bike. For me on both bikes 60 mph is where it'll start to close on itself.
@@WeRide2 thanks, good to know, usually fully closed at that speed anyhow. I need a quieter lid, I have the Nolan 105 now, not good for noise at all.
Nice helmet. On the highway, i still need earplugs while riding, especially on the interstate.
Thanks! It's a good idea to always wear them on the interstate. What I like about this helmet is that when I do remember to put my ear plugs in I don't get excessive pressure on my ears from the helmet.
Yeah it's definitely not silent, if this is the quietest I definitely don't want anything louder... The Sena 21b OEM Bluetooth is just barely loud enough for podcasts and maybe calls at low hwy speed
There is no super silent helmet on the market, I don’t need ear plugs, but we all are different and some are more sensitive to noise than others.
If you want to lower the noise windshield does the most 😉
I agree totally about the coms! I have a Sena and a Cardo. Haven't seen a company married to Cardo yet. Not a Sena fan.
Harley Davidson is now selling Cardo as well..
AGV Tourmodular Insyde is cardo based.
Are there detents on the shield with the chin guard down so it can be partially opened?
Yes, but they aren't that strong
@@WeRide2 Too bad, I ride quite often with the shield cracked.
I bought it in cold weather and a huge amount of cold air came in at the top vent, even when it was closed. I had to seal the holes inside. Owned a lot of helmets, never had such problem with Nolan, Schubert, Scorpion, etc.
Wow! What do you ride?
@@WeRide2 At the moment Honda NT1100, but as I remember my first ride with this helmet was on a Suzuki Burgman 400. At about 0-5 °C a felt a frosty air on top of my head. I almost took it back immidiatly, but then I kept it.
Even with those small vents over the shield closed as well? Wow, I know the NT1100 has a nice windshield too. I guess you can rest assure it'll be a cool helmet in the summer time LOL.
Hows the sound and air flow compared to a shoei rf1400? I have a Simpson modular for summer times when i go far, would like something more quiet thats modular
Not as quiet as the RF1400, at least not for me with the windshields/farings that I run. I can't compare to the Simpson as I haven't tried one yet but Modulars are going to be louder than full face in general.
@@WeRide2 ok cool, i appreciate the input 🙏🏼
Just bought one from Revzilla. I hope it's as quiet as they say it is. My Schuberth C3 Pro is due for an upgrade. Wear your earplugs people...!!!
I think a lot will depend on what windshield/faring you have in front of you.
Trying to get bugs and flies out of the top vent is a bitch. Fine mesh over the vent hole would be good. It would also stop bugs and flies from getting inside the helmet and crawling about on the inside of the visor.
How did you run the audio? Sounded great!
For the helmet? Here's the Cardo install: th-cam.com/video/VcXwLwYw52Y/w-d-xo.html
@@WeRide2 no I meant for the test ride of the helmet? Was that a transmitter you had attached the to strap?
Oh, no that was my rode wireless mic.
@@WeRide2 lol I saw that. But do you run a mic off of it into the helmet?
Yes a short gaming mic.

what about hjc cs-15? are hjc helmets in general quieter than the others? im trying to find the best quiet helmet under 200$. kinda cheap for something of high quality but eh thats what i got
While I haven't had a chance to use that helmet, the internet articles I've seen on it are positive. I wouldn't say they're quieter as a whole, they seem to be on par for the most part with similar helmets in their price range. They've gotten a lot better since the RPHA line came out in my opinion. For that price point you may also consider the Bell Qualifier DLX (around $160), which I had for a number of years. My favorite thing was the photochromatic visor that you can purchase separately. Stay safe!
i know about bell but they arent sold here in bulgaria. agv k1 is other that i consider but its almost double the price of the hjc. can u tell me few helmets under 200 that are at least average quiet?@@WeRide2
HJC LS-Max, LS2 Stream Street, Shark Evo One 2 might do the trick. Quality ear plugs will help in your quest as well.
sad. the only one sold here is the evo and it seems to be 350$@@WeRide2
How did the Cardo fit?
fit great, plenty of space for it, but i did have to use the mount that sticks to the helmet.
That windshield not staying up is a deal breaker for me. Shame I like the helmet
Great review mate! Not too heavy ? It does weigh a bit!
It does but good for a modular I think.
I’ve just bought this helmet and it is extremely noisy compared to my Schuberth C5. I have installed HJC Sena 50b system, but that shouldn’t create wind noise surely?
Putting in a com system that's designed to fit into their helmet shouldn't make it louder.
My c5 slammed shut. I read a tip, I forget who from and put a o ring each side. Problem gone, visor stays where I decide at any speed.
I've heard that before, might have to try that. What size O ring did you use?
I have the Schuberth C5 and the HJC RPHA 91. I've rotated these helmets over the last 3,000 miles and I can say the HJC helmet is sooo much louder due to less padding around the chin and loud venting. It's so loud that I can't use the HJC Smart 50B communication system because wind noise activates the VOX intercom even with the least sensitive settings. I've never needed earplugs with my Schuberth, but I can't wear the HJC without earplugs. This really sucks because I think it is designed much better than any other modular helmet on the market.
Thanks for the info!
I have the same problem with my RPHA 71. Lots of turbulence near the sun visor lever. Too bad, because the helmet is very nice
Hi
I just bought the Rpha 91. I found it very noisy compared to my LS2 valiant This is at a speed of 60 to 70 mph. The rhpa 91 is very comfortable but that’s not the reason I wanted a new helmet. I was going for the quieter reason. I have to say I’m very disappointed with the rhpa.
I wish there was a way to contact them directly about this problem
Sorry to hear that! You could try them here: support@hjchelmets.com
👍
Had the helmet for 8months. Quieter than BMW System 7. However it leaked massively. Also I had an inch wide vertical rubbing at the top of the shield from one side to the other. Yet it leaked. Anyway I was offered a refund or a new helmet. The new carbon version is out. Will see what it’s like. The price now is £550.
Sounds like you got a defective one. Interested in the carbon version as well. Would love to hear what you think if you purchase it.
Sadly they don't make this in my size. I need a 3xl :(
rpha 91 vs rpha 71 which is quieter?
Good question. I have yet to try the RPHA 71 but I would recommend the Champion Helmets page to look at the stats for both:
RPHA 71: th-cam.com/video/LcqTW2eLFsQ/w-d-xo.html
RPHA 91: th-cam.com/video/hktAIyHStWY/w-d-xo.html
I have issue with my RPHA 91. The external shield slams shut at any speed over 45 mph. The retention keeping it open is weak. Have had numerous helmets over my 35 years of riding bikes and this is the first time I have run into this issue. I contacted HJC over a month ago, they sent message to quality control and after two follow up emails I sent I still have not received any further communication. Poor design and poor customer service.
Also, instead of the D ring that I see in all the reviews is not the case with mine, I got the clip type chin strap which is bulky and I hate it.
If you hear anything keep us posted, this was biggest issue with it as well. Strange how you didn't get a D-ring..
@@WeRide2all HJC needs to do is to retool the mechanism which looks like it would be switchable if they were to send the replacement parts. Deeper notch for the fully opened position or stronger springs. Almost at the point where I may modify it myself….
I also noticed this
For thos issue is a easy fix but might bring other issues like the visor getting to stiff. You just have to put a rubber(cut a rubber gasket) behind the rachet system, depending on how stiff the rubber is the visor will be stiffer.
Did you think that it was really quite? It was rated #1 for being quiet.
Quiet for a modular.. But def not that quiet. All around solid helmet tho
More quiet than the shoei RF1400?
I thought ls2 was intermediate oval not round
It def fits like a round helmet. I love it but i can't wear it for long for that reason.
@WeRide2 dang I'm really liking the price and features still a chunk of change. On something that may fit me like a round.
Yeah that was my only gripe with the LS2, but go try it on...For me extended use created pressure on my forehead.
@WeRide2 I been trying to find one local. My neck injuries wearing a full face is a literal pain. I don't need more lol.
CycleGear locations have them and I believe most Harley Davidson Dealerships carry the LS2 as well. Or at least a variant of it.
Too bad it has the comm crap built in Love the helmet but not a fan of built in communication
Shield slams shut at low speed. After a recent trip I learned the shield leaks during rain. None of our group who had different helmets had this issue. No support after 3 emails. Garbage helmet and absolutely no support from HJC.
Damn that sucks! I've been in some really bad storms and it hasn't leaked thru the shield. Customer support goes a long way....
The shield leaking on HJC helmets unfortunately isn't something new. I remember returning the original RPHA and the RPHA EVO modular helmets due to a leaky visor. it was bad enough that I couldn't see during riding. also let a lot a dust in when in dusty conditions. Swore to myself I'd never get another HJC helmet, but this one does interest me. I remember Jorge Lorenzo who was sponsored by HJC at the time, complaining about their Helmets/visor when racing in the rain. He said something along the lines of criticising them for not being a 'premium' manufacturer.
RPHA 91 is absolute garbage. I bought one and regretted it pretty soon thereafter.
what would be your choice looking back at that same price point?
To be honest, I would go with the old adage of “you get what you pay for”. So, I bought a Shoei GT Air and I am very happy with it. The HJC went back to Revzilla for refund/repair or replacement. However, I think that helmet has some inherent weaknesses, such as the visor mechanism which is too flimsy and broke after a few days of use.
