In this video series, I teach a start-to-finish tutorial for creating Armenian Needlelace, which is the beautiful art of Armenian needlework. This art, also known as point lace, iğne oyası (Igne Oyasi in Turkish), Nazareth Lace, Bebilla, and Knotted Lace, is centuries old. I learned this art growing up in a Lebanon orphanage when I was a little girl. This art is also known as iğne oyası.
I hope to continue sharing this art with you all. Thank you all so much for your support!

I've done crochet and knitting for most of my life, as well as tatting, but I must admit that knotted needlelaces are the pinnacle of lacemaking. The mastery that they require stuns me every time I see it. The fact that they are so hard to pick back, that you must concentrate so hard, that you have to measure most of your loops by eye ... Armenian needlelace is the greatest of all laces.
I love doing Armenian lace and I hope you enjoy it too!
J Cortese Yeah me too… I’ve done all kinds of needlework, not tatting though. I’ve always loved lace and I knit and crochet lace, now I’m trying this out... I like it so far.

I love handwork. My grandma and mom were seamstresses. But grandma crocheted. She didn't do Armenian Lace. My mom wanted me to learn, especially since it's part of my heritage. I'm second generation Armenian. My grandparents on both sides came here at the beginning of the genocide. You do make it very easy. My grandma and mom would be proud. Thank you
You're so welcome, and thanks so much for sharing this.
I lost my croatian grandma a few years ago. She made so beautiful laces. To see now how you explain such awesome handwork is just wonderful! To listen to you sitting in your garden gibes the feeling to learn from my family. Thank you very much for the video! ❤ 😊
My pleasure, I'm so happy you find solace in this work!
My deepest condolences for the loss of your grandmother. 🙏🏼💜🙏🏼💙🙏🏼🧡🙏🏼💛🙏🏼💚🙏🏼
@@number1angel66 Thank you very much 😊❤️
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your knowledge so that it doesn’t get forgotten. We need our women to pass down their knowledge to the younger ones!
You are so welcome! Thanks for enjoying my videos, Mallory!
Thank you for sharing your skills! I like watching people make things when I am depressed, and you are a true artisan!
You are so kind, thank you. There's so much in this world to be happy about, and art is one of them.
I pray this cheers you up!
Absolutely stunning handwork. My mother did needle tatting on handkerchiefs as a child to sell in Grandmother’s “penny store”. I was surrounded as a child with flower gardens, antiques and homemade lace. I have never seen an entire tablecloth tatted this way. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing this lost art with so many beginners.
What wonderful feedback, thank you!
TH-cam always provides distractions from my work. I have so many tatting, knitting, and macrame WIPs and now I need to learn to do this! To the Craft Store! 🏃
Such a kind thing to hear, thank you!
You are great!
I'm korean and I'm very surprised of your lace making skill. I've never seen that kind of thing before.
Lace is amazing!
Wow, thank you so much. Please enjoy and keep practicing. Please feel free to share the video with your friends. Tons of fun to get together with your loved ones and practice together. Also, I absolutely love kbbq & kimchi :)
Exceptionally clear instructions and thank you for English instruction as well, which is not easy to find. I understood everything perfectly and if anyone needs to watch something slowly, all they need to do is go into their settings on the bottom of the youtube screen of this video and change the speed. I'm currently working my way and am on the second to last video with no problems (other than my stitches here and there are not perfect, which is ok and normal for one beginning anything!). Thank you so very much. Beautiful lace.
Thanks for subscribing, there are more videos I've posted!
I DID IT!! I finally got a whole first round!! It's wobbly looking but I did it!
Way to go Jennifer!!! Yes, our first few runs will always be wobbly, and that's TOTALLY FINE! Keep up the great work, and if you have any photos, please send them over ! 😊
Ashley, THANK YOU THANK YOU for your wonderful series of videos and the introduction where you showed the very large artwork. Every piece and every size of the needle art is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Spiritual!
I really appreciate your repeating the instructions many times in each segment and doing so many loops faster AND slower. Very helpful. I'm left-handed but have decided to learn with needle in my right hand (I crochet and needle tat right handed already,
so shouldn't be too hard...!) I can't wait to begin this weekend. If you ever decide to write a book or put all 8 videos together into one long video, please let us know! I'm first in line to buy one. Fantastic.
+Lee Peterson That is so kind of you. Enjoy and keep me updated on your work!

Ashley, I have been using your videos to help me create this beautiful pattern of yours. I am curious if you have other patterns? where would I find more patterns? Are there books? or websites? I have searched and all I find is the book on flowers. I made a few and didn't care for them. I love making doilies and small decorative things. any help would be appreciated. So far you are the best teacher of Armenian knotted lace or (needle lace) that I have seen! I'd love to see more coasters and doilies if you made the vidieos. please write back and let me know, or PM me Onna Addis on FB and messenger. onnaaddis@gmail.com
keep up the great work, you're great!
I never considered how lace was made or even was made. I don't know why this blows my mind!
It's not on the same level but I'm getting I to cross stitching and i want to gradually branch out to things like embroidery knitting lacing etc. It's all so amazing.
I hope my eyesight lasts though 😅
Jane, welcome to my channel! I'm so grateful you've found me and are enjoying this beautiful artwork. Yes, it blows my mind too and I've been obsessed with it since I was a little girl. Keep practicing, and soon you will get on the same level. Send me photos of your progress along the way too 😍
Thank you for putting this information out so that we can keep art forms like this alive!! ❤ My goal is to learn as many dying/ old world art forms as possible so that I can pass them on!!
This series of videos is really good. You're clear, concise and stay on topic. I was able to follow your instructions in the first and second video pretty well. My loops weren't as even as yours are but I'm getting the hang of this. Thank you for the videos.

Ok Ashley, I tried for 2 days to get the first ring done with the 12 loops on it, but I just could not get the hang of it. Then I realized that the ring with the loops looks just like a ring with picots in shuttle tatting, which I do all the time. So I made the first ring with the 12 loops with shuttle tatting, and then continued on with the rest of this with a needle and followed along with you. Thank you so much for teaching me how to do it. I know I will like this more and more as I get better at it.
+Gemini Dolly That is wonderful. You're welcome!
I tatted the first ring, too!

I'm so glad Linda! Have you gotten started yet?
BecomeInspired I have not yet started, although I have all the materials… I do so many things and my intention is to make fiber creations which incorporate all the things I can do. So I will be making some of this beautiful Armenian lace for one of my mixed media fiber art works… Hopefully I will be able to keep you posted! If you’re on Facebook search for my name, I am the only ‘Linda Carol Adrienne’ that Google can currently find… LOL! Illove to watch your skill as you make this lace!
Linda Carol Adrienne That is so cool! I’ve never heard anyone mixing this type of media, I have to check it out.
BecomeInspired - I have just started with my work. I currently have a piece in the Virginia Beach Arts Center show “ La Femme”… It is my first piece in A real art gallery… I have another piece that is in the “Sacred Threads” exhibition in 2019, which is still on tour around the country… It has taken me until being 65 years old to finally allow myself to express the beauty that I can create. I am very much grateful for all of accomplished individuals like yourself, from whom I can learn things that I can add to my pieces. In Joyful, Loving Gratitude, Linda Carol

Thanks for the wonderful compliment, Lisa! Make sure to tighten them well and you should be good, but like anything, practice is going to be the best thing you can do. It's OK to make lots of mistakes in the beginning.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I want to make my own wedding dress, and of course I need lace, and I am horrible at tatting. This looks like I might be able to make something. At least a prettier jumble of thread than what I did with tatting...
You're welcome! That's a great idea and I'd love to see the end product.
Thank you. :) I'll have to put up a video or something about it. Of course, I won't have occasion to wear it for a long while, but that doesn't mean I can't have it done.
Have a nice day!
Lindíssimo trabalho.👍
Obrigado por assistir!
This is SO difficult to follow. But my boyfriend, roommate, and I are all trying. I think the thread we are using is so small and that is making it more difficult. You are covering up what you are doing with your hand, and it would be easier to follow if you were going slower and maybe inside where the light is consistent. I will keep trying!
Thanks for the honest feedback Jordan! I wish you guys success! I’m going to do a new beginners series with a new camera soon. In the meantime some of my newer videos were filmed more clearly and might help you.
Thank you for making these videos! This is really difficult! I'm going to keep trying though. The circle around my finger keeps getting too loose as I make the petals.
You can do it! It's my pleasure Stephanie!

@@BecomeInspired thanks. I will be giving it a try in the coming days.
Parabéns muito lindo seu trabalho

thank you for this video. somehow needle laces have come up on my feed though I rarely watch needlework videos - as someone who enjoys knitting and other types of needle-related art (crochet, sewing, a bit of embroidery) this is something quite fascinating to me and I love how you don't need any really special tools - I could do this with the material I already have from my existing hobbies, and I could even use thicker yarn of a similar type (though of course, it would not look as fine or beautiful as the ones with fine crochet thread as you use here)!
a question: which of your subsequent videos addresses adding new thread?
Charmaine Eng Hi Char! Every time I run out of thread on any of these videos, I add new thread and show my viewers. I will make a new video of this and detail the exact steps soon as well. I’m glad you love the videos :)
@@BecomeInspired thank you, that's helpful!
Charmaine Eng If you watch any of my videos for long enough, you’ll get to a point where I run out of string. Let me know if you can’t find one and I’ll get a specific time for you
@@BecomeInspired will do 😘
asley what kind needle are you using
+Rajul Kanji Any old needle will work. I don't pay any attention to brand names or sizes, other than a somewhat small needle with a small hole at one end and a sharp tip at the other :)
What would you recommend to be the proper length for the first thread to begin?
To begin, I like using approximately 1 yard. For someone who is not used to doing this and would consider themselves a beginner, I would recommend half a yard. But if you feel confident there’s nothing wrong with one yard or more. That would mean you have to replace your string fewer times. This is a great question Linda Carol!
BecomeInspired Thanks!
I love the doily that you made. I want to learn this craft, therefore I will try to follow your wonderful tutorial. You said you used DMC thread, what size thread is it? And what type and size needle did you use. Do you have any suggestions for a beginner like me. I've been crocheting for many years, also do tatting, hopefully knowing those crafts will help me learn needle lace. Thank you for sharing your talent.
I am glad you're interested in this. Any size thread and any needle the thread fits through will work. If your preference is a thin thread, you can use a thin DMC with a small needle.
Thank you for answering my questions so quickly.
bonne continuation
Merci!
Thank you.
You're welcome! I hope you enjoy.
