Interesting. I grew up in Tasmania in the 90s and I remember seeing his ads on TV all the time. We had a store near us in Burnie and I remember being about eight (so maybe between '92 - 95) and one time seeing Charlie actually in the store! He had a bottle of beer in his hand and was walking around flicking through all the clothes with an attitude of disgust. Even though I was just a kid, I could tell there was something strange going on with him. He just looked like a mess. And it was a real shock just seeing someone looking around a clothing store with a beer in their hand, just seemed real out of the ordinary. Still, I was very excited to see him. I remember saying to my Mum, 'That's Charlie, look, that's him from the ad,' but she just kept shushing me. Looking back now, I'm guessing it's because he was drunk and acting strange. But may also have just been more like, hey, it's not really a big deal...
Shut his business down overnight one night and fled to QLD owing Tas-TV nearly 80 grand in unpaid advertising fees so I recall..
