    Keep in mind that I've only used it for a couple weeks, that being said, so far so good th-cam.com/users/postUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM . Using it at 8 ft. by 8ft. deer blind that is insulated. I have to keep the door cracked for it to get enough air to burn, but that is very likely the wood I've used. Much better quality than I expected for the price. Now if I can just take it easy in the beginning it won't be 90 degrees in my blind. All in all it seems like a keeper.

    This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list th-cam.com/users/postUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

    I have leaned greatly from this, I think I want to attempt to make a pellet stove, I always thought they needed a fan that ran constantly for combustion, this video showed me differently. Thank you!

    You could build a small fire inside the stove before lighting the pellets to heat the flue and get your air draw so you don't have to use so much torch fuel heating the flue that way and the fire and heat from the pellets should minimize residual ash from the heating fire

    I made a stove with the same idea for burning pellets and the only problem I have is the ash buildup in the burner that slows the burn rate down. I am going to change mine to a vertical down draft design like yours to possibly get rid of ash buildup. Mine was previously designed to heat my home (which it does quite well) but I want to able to fill my hopper (holds 50 lbs. pellets) so it can run constantly and not be tended to. I think this is the answer. We'll see!

  • @antoncolbo
    @antoncolbo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I miss the floating flame of the original version, but that really is a fire breathing dragon! With the recessed dish holding the pellet hopper, that will probably preheat the combustion air quite a lot. If you had a slightly deeper dish so it sat lower inside the stove-top, it would heat the combustion air up even more, but this looks like it works very well as it is!

    • @campingtogether
      @campingtogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it would be nice to have a deeper dish as you think. It's okay now, but I think it would be nice to make the stove a little smaller.

    I can see how a "powerless rotating cowl" on top of the chimney could really help on the start up process, maybe making it become a hand cranked fan for creating draft when the chimney is cold

    • @campingtogether
      @campingtogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      There are various ways to start. In a non-mechanical manner, a small fire can be placed under the stove's flue for preheating. Of course the method you suggested is cool too. Thanks for watching! :D

    • @PainterD54
      @PainterD54 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you heat up the chimney pipe up before lighting the stove you will already have a draft. I usually just light a little wad of paper or a piece of cardboard to heat up the flue and that's enough to get the stove going and keep it going. The hotter it gets, the faster the updraft is in the chimney.

    Great variation on pellet feed. I was thinking of the sink drain basket for an adjustable feeding tube bottom; after removing rubber gasket and plastic handle. Your solution was faster. Great design.

    • @campingtogether
      @campingtogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you for your comment! I was thinking of the sink drain basket too. However, I changed my plan not to use it after I found that excessive holes on burner bottom makes flame spread. Like I used steamer basket before. In designing this second-generation combustor, I aimed to concentrate the flames to increase combustion stability and reduce ash as much as possible over long periods of use. I'll use it for a long time and share the results. Have a nice day.

Does the chimney play a large role in the design? I noticed you heating the chimney, mine was inside the paint can open air vents! I also noticed your combustion chamber was sealed

    Question: the premise is that the draft keeps pulling not allowing the fire to creep up the feeding supply of wood pellets? Wondering how the hot metal and fire/heat doesn't move upwards into the feed supply.

      @@GodOfReality Any dense stone will work. I'd be cautious about soapstone because of its association with asbestos. Talc and asbestos are very close relatives in the serpentine family, if I remember my mineralogy. Varieties in the Western U.S.A. are known for the asbestos association, especially. You don't want to breathe the stuff!

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The iron will heat up and give off that heat relatively quickly. But a chunk of railroad track is pretty dense, all right! I'm just not sure it would give off heat for as long as dense rock. Metal is a very good heat conductor.

    I dont have down draft but have small wood stove I built to burn pellets I use French fry baskets one most of time two if very cold started with pipes with holes in 3 places across basket for more air but was to much took out just fill basket buy pellets that are slower burning fill up about 4lbs for 1 basket burns 2 and half hours I started throwing some wood on top of them last longer heats my 1,500 square ft does burn faster than like but am happy fast heat added free wood better than 125 a month for propane furnace or 200 a month electric

    Never had much luck burning peletes! You have a very efficient design! Maybe they need a larger combustion chamber? Seems to work with your setup just fine

      In the self-feeding top-down pellet combustor, it was found that combustion was stabilized by the vacuum only when adequate minimum exhaust was maintained. Otherwise, it is dangerous. Thank you for watching. Good luck.

    Well done, music is cool. Efficient way to demonstrate your work. You created J tube of rocket stove. For more heat you will be needing metal drum on pipe chimney for capturing heat. With J type rocket stove you can burn wood sticks or branches so they are fed by gravity, meaning more free time :-)
