  • @riffmaster56
    @riffmaster56 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    There's actually nothing wrong with calling a pass play in that situation, just not that one. The pass they called was totally wrong,
    super risky, and very poorly executed. Running that play from shotgun clearly telegraphed a pass play. If I called the play, I'd call a
    play action to the right to Marshawn Lynch because NE is going to be looking for them to run, and you run it with Wilson under the
    center. You sell the shit out of the play action and have the tight end on the left delay one second (again, apparently blocking to sell
    the run), and then break off for the rear end zone pylon. If the play works, you're gold. If the play ain't there to be had, Wilson just
    throws the ball out of the end zone. That stops the clock, which is strategically why you call that particular play, plus it is way safer
    than the stupid slant play that was called. You would then have 2 more downs and a timeout to give the ball to Lynch from the one
    yard line.

      Was it though? I've seen dozens of TDs on rub routes in the Endzone, maybe more. And that's the only time I've EVER seen that play intercepted. To me they made it about the play call not the play and it was the best play I've EVER seen. Also no one mentions the fact that the Patriots broke the huddle with four 2-Gapping behemoths in Vince Wilfork#75/6ft2/325 Lb, Alan Branch #97/6ft6/350LB, Sealver Siliga #96/6ft2/344LB, Christ Jones #94/6ft2/302LBs/, flanked by two very strong EDGE setters in Chandler Jones #95/6ft5/266LBs and Rob Ninkovich #50/6ft3/260, with two bruising throwback LB, Jamie Collins #91/6ft4/250Lbs and Dont'a Hightower #54/6ft3/265LBs, with three CB to match the Seahawks three receiver set (Revis, Browner, and Bulter).
      The seahawks lined up in a 3x1 nub set, with the TE to the far (boundary) side, with an inside receiver in the near slot, tight to the formation, and a 2 wr stack out wide of him almost to the numbers. The near slot motions over to a flanker position out wide to the boundary, and Darrelle Revis follows him. This is the key indicator - to Russell Wilson that the Patriots are in man-to-man coverage, so he should go ahead with the play as-called, since it is a man-beater by design, but it also clues Belichick to not call a timeout since Butler and Browner now know to expect one of the Seahawks staple man-beater, rub-route plays that they had actually repped against in practice leading up to the SB! Another key for Wilson is that the Patriots match their 6 Man-Line with essentially 8 players, Chandler Jones on the far EDGE, with Collins - who has the TE in m2m coverage - in the C-Gap between the TE & Tackle, and then Wilfork, Siliga, Branch, and Chris Jones across the line in the A & B gaps, and Ninkovich on the Near side EDGE. This leaves the 265 MLB Dont'a Hightower as the unlocked player behind the LOS, to fill any creases that may open up and meet Marshawn Lynch in the hole, in the even that Seattle chooses to run. However, had Seattle Called for a shotgun, sorry, pistol run play in the huddle, you would have likely heard "Kill! Kill! Kill!" aka "Omaha! Omaha!' (S.O. Peyton) as he checked out of the Run play and in to the contingency pass play, because you could not possibly have a less favorable "box count" to run against.

  • @Anthonyprinciotti

    That season, Lynch got the ball five times at the opponent’s 1-yard line. He scored just once. Over his career, he had 36 carries from the opponent’s 1-yard line. More often than not, he didn’t reach the end zone. On 12 of those carries, he did not gain a yard. On nine of them, he lost yardage. If you made contact with him before he was able to gather momentum, he was much easier to stop (his success on the previous play was a perfect example). The Pats were in a Goal Line Defense, with 8 players packing the line against a Seahawks Offensive Line that was near the bottom of the NFL on running plays. The Seahawks had used that pass play successfully that season, which is why the Pats had practiced defending against it.
