And this is hoe it looks 1 year into mavericks rebuild.. they look confident on the field, sure there are bad games the team has only been together for 3 months and the chemistry looks amazing.
When we criticize them for it, it is only right and just to praise them when they turn it up. I hope they can continue this level of defense until the end of their playoff run and carry it over to the next season. I hope they realize how much different the results would have been had they not kicked their defenses up a notch. Also, Luka's starting to get serious. We're in for good games.

luka has always known how to defend at an elite level, just never had the energy to spare from the heavy load on offense. Until now where he has guys that can be trusted to really operate on their own. Still a team that has been assembled only recently but if not this year, I say next year is their greatest chance at a ring yet. can only hope for no injuries
Definitely true, I think it has as much to do with who was around him as well. Their GM deserves tremendous credit for the drafting and trade deadline deals that have turned them into a real team. Luka can trust guys like Lively, Washington, and Gafford to help clean up mistakes and generally play solid positional defense. That frees him and Kyrie up mentally and allows them to play D worry free and give their best. They're turning into the Celtics biggest threat IMO. As long as they stay healthy, they are a problem...

I've had my mind blown how well the Mavs and LuKai have played on defense during the playoffs, not every game or possession, but often enough.
Luka has been emphasizing his defense in interviews since the regular season and even joked seeing himself in the all defense team next season.
As we've been seeing the Mavs defense really making a difference and Luka can continuously improve his play maybe making it to all defense would not be far-fetched at all.
People like to say, "you must not have watched the Mavs all season if you think they're only now playing good defense." I watched almost every game and this level defense didn't exist even after the trade deadline. Yes, having 2 rotational Centers in Lively and Gafford helped tremendously, but the Mavs really only started clicking on defense in the final 15-20 games of the season.
Seeing Awful Coaching in a good mood is rare.

I have never heard of any other sport commentators like AC to have repeatedly pointed out Luka's feet sliding and hands up showing as evidence for his good defense skills. Great analysis.

The most you get is "oh yeah they played pretty good defense" meanwhile they're slobbering all over the Wolves defense (even though they let the Nuggets shoot a billion and one open threes in game 6 which they bricked).
I've been saying for years that Luka could improve massively on defense if he put in more effort which, up to fairly recently, he couldn't do without exhausting himself due to being the entire offense himself.
I got told by casuals that hes "too unathletic" and "he'll never be a good defender" which never made sense to me, basketball IQ and effort are the 2 most important things in defense as far as i see it.
Luka is becoming an unstoppable beast, every year he becomes so much better even if he is not scoring at his usual level in this series he is gold for his team and silently will end up getting a max win soon.
