  • This random wire ham radio antenna is great when an inexpensive, easy to use, unobtrusive antenna is required. Great for HOA and other places where a big antenna can't be used.

I built my own EFLW using a Palomar 9:1 Balun. It is 200 feet of wire sitting on a 6' privacy fence going around my property. It has a short counterpoise running along the bottom of the fence. I have a short PVC pipe zip tied on one end of the EFLW, and use a short run of SMR-240 into my window. It will tune all bands, from 160 to 6. I only need the internal tuner on the rig all the way up and down. It isn't very high, of course, but I'm in FL and the ground conductivity really helps my signal not get absorbed. Thanks for sharing that video! 73 de Scott N1IA

Unfortunately I have been wrapped up in other things for a while. I expect to do more videos regularly.

I recently added this End-fed OCF antenna to my shack as an alternative to my 49:1 End-fed sloper. I have found it to work very well after trimming/tuning the open wire part of the antenna to get the best SWR on all bands it is designed for. I first tried to tune the choke portion of the antenna but this didn't really help - I returned it to the recommended 12' location on the coax. Mine is hanging at about 30' as an "L" shape with very good results. I do use an external autotuner which is needed on the WARC bands as they are a bit over 3-1 SWR and outside of the IC-7300 tuning range. Out of the box the sweet spot of the antenna was toward the lower end of all the bands so I ended up folding back and wrapping about 2' of wire to bring it to the middle of all bands. After using and comparing this antenna with my End-fed I would highly recommend this as a first antenna for HF. Jim KC3RFG 73

I have not tried tuning the antenna length. I may try this sometime in the future.....Thanks for watching.

Is this the 9:1 unun? If so, I have a 9:1 unun from LDG that I use for POTA. I think based on my experience, you will have better propagation with that antenna if you elevate the feed point. I let my counterpoise hang down with the coax. With those trees I see, you can likely get it up a good 20 or 30 feet which I think might improve the antenna's performance. Good video! Take care, 73

I had bought this antenna from "PALOMAR" and I am so happy, Really, this antenna is a good product, especially for fresh HAMers. Thank a lot and "73".

I have had mine for about 4 years. It has been 155' lazy L, 160' sloper fed at the top and grounded to a 35' tower, and finally is a kind of slanting/sloping lazy L that is about 218' of wire. It acts like a long wire antenna on the high bands and works DX fairly well on SSB. Not a bad antenna system for multiband use. 73

Thank you for this review. I was waiting to try the P.E. Off-Center fed dipole - after this review, I am going to “pull the trigger” on that purchase. Can’t wait to try it. KQ4IXD
