    Really enjoyed your video, although I'm uncertain how different some of the regulations are between the UK and US, there are many similarities. I've had my boat for a year and just realized I'm in the dark regarding my radio's capabilities. I am not required to have a VHF license as a recreational boater, however, I will be heading out 40 miles in pursuit of albacore, halibut, etc., and I've just registered my MMSI and now understand how powerful this tool is, especially once hooked to the GPS enabled chart plotter. Thanks again for the information.

      Hi Good question.
      The USA has different channels but the operation is the same, most sets you can swop from European channels to USA channels, this is why the standard horizon has the button with 16 and 9 on soi you hold it in and it goes to 9 which is a call-up channel in some US areas. In my experience, the USA has weather channels on the WX button which gives a continuous weather forecast which is great.
      Glad you enjoy the channel, please tell your friends.

    Does a USA ham radio license count as an operator certificate?

    • @CitySailing
      @CitySailing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You will need to check, in the UK no but you can take a direct assessment.

    I have a General class amateur radio license with the FCC. I noticed my Baofeng UV-5R dual band VHF/UHF , 2 M , 70 CM hand held , can also receive and transmit on VHF marine radio bands.

      You can only use a marine radio with the set licenced with Ofcom and you having a certificate to operate, you also need to be marine-based.

    Hi, as an occasional boater in the UK I want a VHF for safety only - what license do I need to apply for [as of 2021] - it used to be ofcom cg66 but I think this has changed

    • @CitySailing
      @CitySailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To use a VHF you need a Certificate to Operate, we at City Sailing can offer this to you as an online course or classroom course. The CG66 was a Coast Guard reporting form which has now been superseded by the RYA Safetrx.

    Its worth noting that if using a mobile phone ... Dial 112 instead of 999 as this will use the strongest cell mast even if its on another network.. also will close down others lines on a cell site to give you priority over other users if busy... Definately worth adding this to your crib sheet near the radio...

      I looked into this and could not find a definitive answer, if you have any links with the answer please let me know. Thanks for watching.

    I have a handheld vhf radio without dsc capabilities. When I registered it with offcom I got an mmsi number and t number. Although my radio has no dsc do I still say my mmsi number in a mayday call and do I use t number as call sign? Found your video very useful thank you

    • @CitySailing
      @CitySailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You do say your MMSI with the Mayday Distress Call as it is your unique number and used to identify you. Your Call sign T stands for transient which means it is used with a handheld and not fixed to one vessel. Thank you for watching and please tell your friends about our videos.

    IV used VHF in my job with out been assessed/ certified and with out a vessel (more land based)
    IV spoke to dock masters and VTS of the area's I was working in.
    All was good but was I still in the wrong?

    Is it possible for someone with a speech impediment ( stutter ) to take this course ?

    • @CitySailing
      @CitySailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Please email me. As long as you can get the message out it would be fine, the mayday is largely pre written and you only need to add the vessels name, position and Nate of the distress.

    Why do people need to be certified? Old fashioned laws.

    • @CitySailing
      @CitySailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is a legal requirement and down to safety as the VHF is pivotal in the case of an emergency.

      You will need a certificate to operate to use your set, this is the course in the video we can offer at www.citysailing.com , the set you buy can be registered directly for free with Ofcom. There is no CG66 this is now covered by the RYA DSasfetrax system.
