Yes..spray at reasonable temp and humidity..make sure you have the right fluid needle and cap..make sure you are getting a good reduction on whatever coat you are spraying..the key is use the recommended solvent..also practicing your gun to part distancing before going all in. And finally - use clean equipment..
Brad Angove couldn’t help but chime in. Musician first here but my full time gig is working QA for a very large paint company..also spent years watching car bodies go through paint at Subaru. You got a great channel!
I'm a advocate of buying second hand than I am buying cheaply built gun say a devilbiss GTI for say £50-£100 but in the uk I bought a cheap fast mover mini gun for £10 on ebay and it's a great little gun. I find ( not being a painter) setting up my gun to spray clear is so different to spraying a colour as you can see the spray pattern. Maybe next time brad do a setup video on your guns a quick tutorial for us non professionals. You sir make it look easy...
I recently bought the Warwick minigun you have on your site. Three jobs in, it's ACES! I love it. Thanks for the tips, tricks and info!! *(Warwick discount wasn't working when I ordered last month...still worth it!)
Do i have to clean the spray gun in between all the coats? I'm going to attempt for the first time a nitro finish. So I'm going to spray 3 coats in a day waiting 2-3 hours betweeb them. Do i have to clean it every time? Should i use pure nitro thinner? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much. Salutes from Italy!
Have a look at my video on how to paint your guitar with nitrocellulose lacquer. If you’re waiting a few hours, you should clean your gun or at least put some solvent in it.
Hey Brad, what's the best gun for general clear coating? I almost never do solid color finishes, but sometimes I put a clear coat on instead of oil, and i'm kind of sick of using spray cans.
If I had to have just one gun, I would buy that devilbiss flg400 finish line that I showed with the blue body. It's versatile, comes with a few nozzles, and generally works really well. There are nicer guns out there, but for the price I find that one to be great value.
As always very helpful. Another question though. To buy a cheap paint gun I'd still need to buy £200 compressor + accessories all in all around £300 minimum. I can get semi-decent turbine HVLP for roughly the same price. They seem to be more versatile with easier home type diy jobs. Which one would be better to spend the money on? I assume I can get equally good finish with them with some elbow grease? But would it be more difficult or is it the same work, but different technology?
I haven’t tried to finish something like a guitar with a turbine gun, but the guy at high line guitars uses a nice turbine gun and gets great finishes. From my perspective, I think the compressor an pneumatic gun are a better investment because of the versatility. I can use various air tools with my compressor, fill my tires, blow off my workspace, and use different guns as time progresses and I pick up new equipment. That’s just my perspective though.
@@BradAngove I did a bit of a research and everywhere I read versatility of the turbine was flagged due to it's portability with examples of painting walls, cabinets, garden fences etc. Fair point though that with compressor versatility goes into to much broader applications than just painting. Guess will have to re-watch your "How big compressor ... " video ... again. Thanks
I think any project you go into you have to have a reasonable amount of expectation. If you are someone who can only afford to maybe do one or two guitar projects within a couple of years, then going to somewhere like Harbor Freight is your only option without breaking the bank. But then you also have the expense of paying for a compressor if you have never used a spray gun before. But there is also the flipside where you get what you pay for. Harbor Freight does have nicer guns in the black widow series and spectrum series but for what you pay for those guns I would rather spend the same amount of money on the warwick guns and know I am getting quality. I also believe it is about surface prep and technique as well. I have seen Will from the Guitar Doctor channel lay 2k clear down just using a small mini detail gun from Harbor Freight and it came out looking like glass. I have also used a 5 dollar Preval Sprayer that is nothing more than a can of propellant attached to a glass jar to hold paint and sprayed Auto Air Opaque Midnight Blue over a Squier 51 guitar body with Spray Maxx 2k clear over the top and the results were fantastic. Sometimes you have to work with what you can get but I understand both sides of the spectrum. Personally if you already have a compressor, pay the little bit of extra money and get the Warwick guns
Love this channel and you from Canada too! I'm setting up a home spray booth. What can you suggest for some low odor water based paints for neon colors for guitars and clear coat? Thx man keep up the great videos!
Just like a great player can make a cheap guitar sound good, the same logic applies to painters and paint guns. And PS - Thanks ever so much Brad for putting all the extra content out during the lockdiwn!👍
Good video brad. Challenge for you. Pretend you have no fancy machines and tools. Show us how to drill six perfect ferrules using a drill or electric screwdriver please.
In my experience anytime you try to go to a cheaper tool to do a job you'll end up doing more work to make up for the low quality of the work that tool can do sometimes you just need something cheap to hammer out a project and doing a little more work can be worth it on a one time purpose or even just a few time uses but if you're going to be doing any extensive work with those tools it really pays to just buy better tools it'll cost a few dollars more but it'll pay for itself with the work it saves
No, not all of these are stainless. The cheaper ones I have here will rust if your shoot water based through them and aren't super careful about cleaning and drying them. They're not designed to be water-based compatible.
Hey man - I have an old acoustic with a red finish that I’m looking to strip to get down to the natural wood and am looking for best recommendations. I’m not sure what the exact finish / paint is but can send you pics if necessary and would greatly appreciate the help..what do you recommend?
Hey I was just looking at lots of your other videos but I can't seem to get an answer and this is goona be off topic man but I am gonna ask anyway, So I have my elec guitar all sealed sanded and primed and ready to top coat, hey I wanted to use a metallic red but I have been told by the guy in the homestore that it won't work because there's no way to lacquer finish metallic paint and protect from getting damaged is he for real ?
We're still worried about it here too, but have started a gradual and tentative reopening because our numbers are so low. Had to wear a mask for the haircut, but I'm glad I was able to get one.
Hey Brad! What do you think about those electric spray guns? I've seen some in my country, they are like 2-in-1 spray guns, they have a spray guns but also a little compresor inside, do you think they could work for painting guitars? This video makes me wonder that, because if you can get a nice finish with cheap spray guns, maybe you can get a nice finish with those electric spray guns too. Thanks man and awesome video!
You can with the nicer electric ones. The two part turbine systems are pretty decent. Those big ones you get from home depot for painting your fence are probably going to be pretty tough to use for smaller work though.
Yeah actually I've seen two models, one bigger than the other, and the bigger one had like a professional look... I think is a good option for someone like me that paints a guitar once in a year haha thanks men!
When the border opens back up, you could always come down to Great Falls. We have a Harbor Freight. I mean, it's what, 8 hours, not sure driving that far for Harbor Freight makes sense, but anyway...
There's a guy on TH-cam (somewhat known auto body guy) saying he stopped backing Warwick because the quality went down bad. He's now promoting a new gun company. Curious if you agree or if you think he is just getting more money from the new gun company he is pushing. Thanks! :)
I’ve seen that. I like my Warwick guns, and I’ve heard good things from those who have bought them based on my recommendation, but that guy’s experience may have been different. I won’t speculate on the money thing, but I will say they’re not a great company to do business with from a sponsorship perspective. I don’t factor that in when recommending things though.

Ya, there have been a lot of messed up paint jobs out there from not using properly cleaned equipment.

Did my first non-rattle can job using Dupli-Color laquer metallic burnt orange and clear gloss from a $15 gun. Turned out sexy as hell.

If you have the ability to spray them I recommend the autoair paints. They are strong colors, high quality paint, and water based.

Usually 26psi

If you're doing it enough, absolutely.
All those guns are stainless, I'm assuming? I know not all are, so if using water based paints you have to be careful if the gun is stainless or not.

What do you think about LVLP guns?
They're fine for color work usually and for things like lacquer. I generally prefer HVLP. They move more paint when I need them to.
Brad Angove Thanks. I don’t have a big compressor, so I’m hoping they will do the trick.

What kind of metallic are we talking about here? A normal one like you would see on a car, or are we talking about that “reflective finish” stuff?
