This lecture was absolutely fascinating. Not only did it present information about the Nuremberg /IMT(s), but also a lot of smaller details about some of the people involved with WWII, the Holocaust, and the subsequent trials. I will need to listen again, to make sure I don't forget the new information, and to look for books and authors mentioned by the presenter. Very well done, Mentor Public Library!

The anecdotes really animate the personal relationships within context and contribute to a very enjoyable and interesting lecture. I can’t help but wish this was how we thought high school history, but it takes an engaged lecturer who clearly loves the humanity within the subject matter to convey why the facts matter. Excellent job, sir!

One minor correction: Arthur Seiß-Inquart was convicted and sentenced to death for his role as Reichskommissar in the Netherlands. He lead the most brutal occupation regime in the West and was responsible for the deportation of Jews in the country, Anne Frank being the most well known of them.
I'd have to read up on whether his crimes in Austria played any role at all. "Internal" crimes in Germany prior to the invasion of Poland were not tried at all, i. e. the IMT did not deal with the Nazis sending tens of thousands of Germans to concentration camps before the war. I honestly don't remember if crimes in occupied countries prior to Sept 1 1939 were part of the charges at all. This would be Austria, according to the Moscow Declaration Hitler's first victim (historically it was far more complex and no historian would consider Austria to be solely a victim anymore) and Czechoslovakia.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

The B-24 pilots mistakenly reported they had sunk U-156, and were awarded medals for bravery. Neither the US pilots nor their commander were punished or investigated, and the matter was quietly forgotten by the US military. During the later Nuremberg trials, a prosecutor attempted to cite the Laconia Order as proof of war crimes by Dönitz and his submariners. The ploy backfired, causing much embarrassment to the United States after the incident's full report had emerged to the public and the reason for the "Laconia order" was known.

Thank you so much for sharing with me an infamous fragment of the Hitler's Nazi horrendous regimen, via this intimate story.
It must have been a painful odyssey to recollect such memories and to recount them; they only echo the evilness of Hitler and his followers.
The crimes and cruelties committed against my sons and daughters, my fathers and mothers, my brothers and sisters hurt me deeply, regardless their ethnicity and nationality.
In Isaiah 2: 4, Jehovah God, the Creator and Source of life, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, promises:
"He will be judge among the nations and will settle matters in relation to many peoples. They will turn their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. The nations will no longer raise their swords against each other and learn no more to wage war."
My immediate neighbors are Jews and I am a Jehovah's Witness.
Their hearts are superior than pure gold by far. They are extremely kind.
