Brian I just LOVE your videos and critiques! They have given me a great deal of a insight and ideas as well. Been a wedding Dj for the past 20years and knew I needed to make some changes as my clientele changed and gigs started becoming harder to come by. So I took your advice a looked around at what my competition in my area was doing....then tried to figure out things to upgrade my setup & separate myself from them with unique features that would bring value and increased gigs. So far has worked!!

Very nice video Brian! I think this is a topic that is frequently overlooked or misunderstood. You are right on track with this one in my book

Thank you so much for this particular video! You just saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars! I have a band and lighting the group is of major concern. The room itself is of paramount importance as well. We have our first show coming up soon and I had ideas of uplighting the venue and going all out on my lighting gear. Now after watching this, I can see saving a ton of cash and doing what needs to be done.... Tastefully! Glad you posted this video!!!!

For awhile we tried fully lighting the room with uplighting but it didn't seem comfortable for later in the night. Great at the start though.. Later I went back to accenting certain parts of the room and using dance floor lights with it, everything seemed better and the guests complimented us about it..Using some dark spots seemed to help and quests were more comfortable with it and it created a better party atmosphere..Too much color washing does take away from certain parts or area of a room which is likely where that uncomfortable feeling came from..So now we only light up certain parts of a room instead of the entire room. This video sort of helped and gave us a few more pointers. Thanx Brian.

MrDoctorDJ Thank you. Something else too much room uplighting can do is draw focus & attention away from the dance floor. After dinner, this is where I believe the focus should be.

I agree. We've started directing the attention to the dance floor by using less lights in the seating area and more dance lights on the floor which made a huge difference. Sort of that night club vibe with little lighting in the seating area and lit up on the dance floor. It works so well and easier to build the energy up.With Clients we've never had a problem explaining the new way of placing lights which is another relief.lol

Hello Brian, as I regularly act in the Fashion industry I would like to say that I totally agree with all of your comments on these pictures.
Trying to be selective in the choice of number of light effects is really important.
i can recognize that you kindly pointed at the valuable points that can embellish the scene, and as I work with Fashion brands i can testify that it is really important to proceed so, but I also think that it is important to proceed in the same way for other gig opportunities...
    Good video !

Brian, another great video! More of this! I asked myself after watching this how much indirect spots and how much direct spots to the dancefloor should be. If you look at your examples there are lot that have only effect light direct to the dance floor and "only" indirect uplighting spots. And how important is symmetry of the lights. What do you think?

Great video Brian! On the last picture it may have been that the client chose the top table to be lit that particular way.

Ashley Riggs Sure I understand that 100%. My thought, I guess is that it's a great design! I do, however feel that we, as ether DJs or lighting designers need to be the experts. As soon as the client ignores our professional advice & takes over, both quality & credibility suffers

briansredd for the second picture I feel very drawn to the DJ booth which has the brightest blue in the room and I end up ignoring the wall.

got a question im looking at the lighting in these rooms and on the last one your right there really is no illumination where the bridal party sets. what kind of light would you suggest a dj to use to help illuminate that area to where it will be simple, pleasant and not annoying.

can you do a review of the gig bar 2.0 ......for a mobile dj it looks like a great light to use cuz easy to setup and take down after a gig is done

on the lights on the outside of the columns there where lamp like fixtures on the columns maybe thats why they didnt put the uplighting there...so you think is ok to uplight a column even if there is a lamp fixture on it?

Just curious.... what is your take when dj are using these uplights to give a room wash effect. I am new to uplighting but when i have request for it they want more of a wash effect, My other question would be what to you suggest when you really dont have any main points of emphasis (structurally) that is?

At times I wonder if the number of up lights that are used, may be connected to $$$. More lfixtures = more money?

    • @briansredd
      @briansredd  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

AMERICANMUSICDJMO Yes, if you sell uplighting per fixture, that would be the case. However, if you sell "lighting design" in general and approach this as a lighting designer, it shouldn't matter. The best way I've found to do this is by showing clients sample pictures of your work. You may not even have to go into big explanations on your approach. They will just like what they see & buy the service.
