    This is my request. Someday, you should make a video of a few bass guitars tuned in fifths. First the 4 4 string bass guitars: the low C tuned in fifths, the B flat tuned in fifths, the low G tuned in fifths and the Low F also tuned in fifths. And the 2 5 string bass guitars also tuned in fifths: the low F tuned in fifths, and finally the low E flat also tuned in fifths.

    Not about tone. About tuning. Went RIGHT over your head.

      Hey there! I need your help with something;
      I've got a Steve Harris signature and want to use the strings that came with it (50, 75, 95 and 110 gauge flatwound), tuned E standard as Harris would, obviously. Only problem is, according to the guy at my local shop, it'd cause too much tension and the bass would get damaged... (the neck DID get bowed once I put them on, but the truss rod has been adjusted since, so it's completely straight now). Currently it's tuned down half a step. Do you think I should just use a capo, or try tuning it up to E?
      (The bass has a hi-mass bridge and 70's style tuners, pretty massive ones.)

    What string gague would you recommend for a bass player who plays tuned down a half step a lot and uses a pick 90% of the time?

      id reccomend a set of 50 to 130 set of SIT pure nickel strings and take the 80 off and use the 50 70 105 130 based on personal experience doing this it makes for more balanced tension and the Eb really punches through the mix

      Woofy Stevenson woah, that'd be ridiculously heavy on the lower strings, and that'd probably damage a bass. But I've found that the Ernie Ball Power Slinky .055-.110 bass strings work great for a lot of tunings, like Eb, Drop D, Drop C, and several others

      the reason i use those gauges is because they provide balanced tension per string at about 57 lbs of weight per string and no they didnt damage my old precision bass. im not a fan of the power slinky on bass personally i prefer each sting on bass to have a balanced tension and something like the power slinky set does have that tension on the low e string but in terms of actual tension your g is way above. the 130 on teh Eb doesnt actually feel that heavy when you use that 50 70 105 130 gauge thing and its because by nature most five string sets are criminally unbalanced and too light on the bottom like a 130 on a low b is too flappy for my taste i prefer a 142 or a 150 for that low b with gauges 45 65 90 110 142

      I like my Kalium balanced 110-45 for drop D, E flat standard and E standard. That's about 40lbs per string if you're in E flat, but they stay pretty snappy even when they're actually quite loose. IME Ernie ball strings die quickly whereas Kalium last exceptionally long.

      Just buy a 5 string base and tune down the thickest to A from B

    Uhh... No 145 is not good for Low F#. I have tried it. Its ok for G and better drop A and Does way better for with low B. Am going to say if you want a Good tight Drop C then 130 -135 is your best bet. I wish I could be useing that for my Flatwounds but I cant find anyone that does Flatwound 145.

      With this string you are going to enter low levels of Hades. This is for low C sharp, 17,35 Hz. That is too low to be heard, even good subs will struggle with notes that low.

      Octave4plus makes .375 (yes, .375, practically a steel cable) gauge strings

    Don't buy into the bullshit that you need to change or boil your bass strings. I've had the same strings on my Stingray 5 for 8 years and they are just starting to sound good! I do not change the set until I brake a string. Listen to James Jamerson (Motown) / George Porter Jr (the Meters)/ Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power ) they know how to THUMP! New strings suck!

      +Larry Chronic Jr. That is only if you want flatwound kind of sound. New strings are brighter. Flea changes his strings everyday, because he wants them bright.

      What does Flea have to do with anything? If you look at your bass head you will see knobs that you can turn. Some for brightness and some for low end. You can EQ your sound to fit your playing style. The only knob that you won't find to turn is the Funk knob, cause there aren't any. If I need that Flatwound sound I just pick up my P Bass with flats on it. Haven't boiled or changed them in 18 yrs. And they sound fucking great!. Go ahead and believe everything you hear. You should change your strings after every time you play your bass. Good luck with that. Don't take advice from a guy who thinks the name P Bass came from the shape of the pick ups.

      +Larry Chronic Jr. Flea is a professional bassist and he knows what he is talking about. I hope you agree with me that new roundwounds sound brighter than old. I dont change my strings everyday, but if I have a gig, I'll change them. By the way even with an active bass, your eq can not fix your string sound. Tastes differ, but I'm not going to play with 18 year old roundwounds.
