- I have always loved the way these look. Especially when they are new. So I caved and bought a pair to review even though they are not my favourite shoe to skate in. Feel free to watch and see what I think.

Just got a pair of Etnies Maranas today and I'm in love with the cupsole. It's like having shinguards on my feet. I'm fearless to stomping down the board in any scenario, and the reduced feel hasn't impacted my control at all. No more rolled ankles or sore big toes thanks to rigidity too.
AD1 best shoes ever actually made to last more than 20 kickflips I’ve had 2 pairs of xt’s and now I’m on the Michelin’s I recommend them to everyone I see
AD1 indeed my friend there the best shoes for skateboarding I've skated about 8 pairs in a row & I have brand new pair ready to skate when I feel like the ones I have now are done
I just bought a brown pair! Nicest shoes ive ever had, i dont even want to skate in them.
X K Dude skate them! They're just ordinary shoes if you don't skate them. The magic happens once you start stomping out tricks with total confidence in your catch and land primo without feeling anything.
where did u find maranas, i ended up with some vans cus i couldnt find maranas but they wouldve been my choice
I absolutely love the look of old skool's as well. Hard to beat such a classic silhouette and retro design as you mentioned. They've always been good to me as skate shoes (although I prefer Janoski's) but I've never tried the pro model old skool's so this review helps a ton. Thanks for making quality video's about things that matter to skateboarders, really digging your channel.
I now Skate Vans mid Pro Shoes, protects your ankles nicely ! Just purchased the Vans Grosso Anti- Hero mid black and white Skate shoes and I'm also waiting for a pair of Vans 112 mid Pro Skate shoes black and white! UK
You should try the half cabs
My favorite shoe is the Converse CTAS Pro HI. Enough padding and support for my feet and I just feel a lot safer in them. I just stock up on them when I see them on sale since that's all I've been skating in for the past few years. I try to branch out and maybe try low tops but that doesn't ever seem to last, I guess I am just too used to one kind of shoe, A few years back I liked the DC Spartan HI, but feel like the Cons give more protection and are better overall.

I’m wearing vans now and I’ve always hated vans. No arch or ankle support whatsoever. No padding. I have to be very careful I don’t get WACKED in the ankle or top of the foot. BUT they do seem to be helping me learn kickflips

Thanks for this. Work at a boarding haha school and a student has re sparked my interest in skating. So yes, I have been old man skating. Decided to try vans for the 1st time...sadly discovered this video a bit late. Though thanks for the in depth review as it was incredibly helpful and addressed all of my concerns and more
I'm an old man skating a pair of these as well and it's entirely because I like how they look. The toe shape is weird except for the one day it feels like a Blazer, the canvas sucks, and the toe seam feels like it's there only to remind me that life has a lot of suffering in it. I'll get another pair at some point I'm sure. Now let's get serious about those nollie halfcab heel manual and fs flip manuals. AMAZING. Go back and get them!

Sorry to bump an old vid Ben, but I gotta say your reviews are so on point I feel like the world has missed the opportunity to have the best / most clued up skate shop owner out there. I watched one of your reviews on vans shoes not long after I bought my half cabs and they were exactly like you said vans would be, they really made my feet start to hurt after a while from impact. I put a pair of high-quality footbeds in them and that definitely helped but they still do have that point where it gets to achey to skate on. for the last month,I've been learning heelflips and the biggest problem I had to overcome was exactly what you said about the board not landing straight and being kinda rocket, it took a lot of effort and trial and error on my part to get the board to behave but this for sure has me wondering if I could make my life easier with different shoes....I just love the look and board feel of the half cab that much it'll probably be a while before I try something else...well that and the fact I'm poor lol.
I always go with the classics, pros are bloated. Vans heels always feel big unless i get slip ons or ol skools. Keep rippin Ben!
I bought the Pro Old school couple years ago and the moment I started walking around in those shoes I immediately knew I wouldn't wanna skate them, so I saved them for everyday use

I love Vans, I got some new half cabs to skate but Im also really into the Airwalk classics they have brought back. I have a couple pairs of Airwalk ones. Love the quality like it was back in the day. Going to review and compare to the Vans half cabs.
You should try some converse Breakpoints, really good vulc shoe, plus its cheaper than nike.But, I recommend switching the insole or getting the pro version

Nice video, properly informative, I was considering some old skull pros for park and transition, I think that if you're looking for a pair of vans that are a bit bulkier with better padding, then try a pair of Kyle Walker Pros, those things have some proper protection, can't say much for impact resistance, but they are definitely thicker than the majority of vans shoes.
I do want to try those. I get a feeling they are probably really good.
I've been skating the es accel slims for the last month er so.They've been Workin out great other than the insole it comes with.
Are you skating the new nyjah nikes? Would love to see a really good review (like you do) on them!
They are Janoskis. I want to try the nyjahs too but I might try a cupsole first.
Nice review. Vans are good while they last but unfortunately it's never been too long in my experience. I wish they would get rid off the side canvas and just make the whole shoe suede I recommend giving Etnies Maranas a shot. One of the best shoes by far. Cheers
Pronation is a serious issue and very common with the back foot because we tend to keep that foot on the tail which is pronating the ankle it can lead to anthrosis.
When you up the manual pad with front heel, you don’t wind up your arms and shoulders and still got perfectly de fs 180 rotation, please tell how you can do that, amazing 👏
Vans old skools classics are my favorite skate shoes
I agree with you about these OldSkool, they looks great, but for street skating they're not the best.I used to skate a lot of half cab back then, they were more comfy, and less dangerous when you'd primo. Now, I use to skate E112 Pro since 3 years, and they are great, its a ameliorate version of the Oldskool, with a thicker sole, toe cap and suede, and that's a good thing that they've put that insole, my knees and ankles needed that 20 years ago ahaha.
Ben, this was a fascinating one to watch. Why? Vans old-school PROS are my go-to skate shoe, so it's always interesting to see what other's take on them are. However, there is one critical difference; I have kingfoam insoles in mine. I *hate* the stock insoles for the EXACT same reasons you mention: foot feels like it's going sideways, no protection on Primo/impact, etc. Kingfoams resolve (at least for me) EVERY issue you mention (aside from board hitting your feet). I stumbled across Kingfoams about a 2 years ago and they CHANGED EVERYTHING. In my 30+ years of skating, there is not a single skate product I would recommend more than Kingfoams. Add them to old-school pros (have to have a removable insole), and then you've got all the protection/impact, plus the board feel. If you have never seen this video, DEF give it watch. HA! You can thank/curse me later! Be warned, they can be a bit ify about which shoes they fit in. I have a pair of Adidas Busenitz, and the kingfoams do NOT seem to work as well in those as they do in Vans.
I am interested to try them in the vans for sure. It might just be that I don't know what I'm missing but most shoes insoles don't bother me.

i think the vans ortholights are better similar look but they last longer then two weeks thats for sure, i know the feeling of those soft spongy vans i bought a pair of the full cabs and after two weeks they were soft and loose felt horrible trying to skate street.
The Vans Classics barely hold up to walking!
You should check out the TNT Advanced Prototype or the China Pro 2. They have a new version of the ultracush soles

Vans is one of those shoe companies I really wanted to like, but they're just not for me. The best ones I had were the Crockett 2's. If I can catch a re-issue/remake of the original Rowley's I will give them a go because I've always wanted to, but outside of that I think I'm done with Vans.
can someone please tell me the difference between old skool and old skool pro? i'm saying this because I'm quite new to skateboarding and I want the Vans Old Skool Pro Zorilla Blue Crocodile Skate Shoes but I honestly don't know if it's a good shoe or not, (I only chose this shoe for how cool it looked).

I prefer Van's just because of how good I can feel the board. Like he said it feels like you are just wearing socks but I like them even tho you can get hurt so easily in them. That is why I still wear them instead of my nike solar SB's

That spot where the sole blows through happens with all vans in my experience
The reason that your shoes get soggy is bcs your ankle turns inward each step, I have had the same problem and I went to someone to get it checked out. It was also bad for my knees so i got special insoles that prevented my ankle to turn inward and now my knees and ankles don't hurt anymore and my shoes don't get soggy.

I rode and still do in Vans especially since I started skateboarding in the classic old skool and it was good for a bit but after a while I cant skate in classic cause after a while i tear thru foam but I'm liking the pro models more over the classic

They aren't anymore.
I skate in the old skool pros and have for 15 years. they are very durable for me, you just have to make sure you get the pros. the classics aren't made for skating but the pros are. plenty of pros wear old skools, and I think they know what they are doing. to each his own though for sure. I personally hate Nike and Adidas.

Vans sk8 hi’s are great for vert skating though my main problem with vans (Old school models) is the break in period is super painful for my feet 💀
Try a pair of Globe Mahalo vulc lows mark appleyard signature shoe pretty descent lasted me two months skated everyday they make a cupsole one as well
I hate them too. I use Vans Old Skool daily, but not to skate, so when they break or they get too old I skate them.
I used two pair, and for me, they're horrible.

I have never filmed a part. I would enjoy that but don't really have the time. I would love to film a whole part that was filmed by another human. Get some really good angles and lines that I can't do when I am filming with a tripod.

I did the same thing with vans, I did a kickflip on a bank and though I had it so I stomped it and missed the tail just a little and slammed the tail into my instep or arch of my foot and my foot turned purple and swelled up it sucked.
It's feeling a lot better today. It's only two days later.

I went there pretty late on Sunday evening. Almost all the stores were closed except starbucks and Canadian Tire. I think it would be a bust after 9am and before 7pm most days.
Ive always liked parking garage skating. The sanctuary from the rain and snow. The acoustics too. From what ive seen, in your videos, you have some gems there.

Nope, not just you. I skate about 80% white shoes. I like the contrast from grip to shoe and just like the style in general. The only problem is so do way too many other people. It's getting pretty trendy again.

Yea I just got new vans and the seem way too grippy and it just feels so weird trying to kick flip.
What are your thoughts on those rubber "griptapes"? I bought one and found it simply amazing. It's really grippy and my shoes doesn't even get its seams weared out.

Have you ever tried a smith grind to switch crook? I noticed you can do them from 5-0.
I never have. Maybe someday. I have also never done a 5-0 to switch crook yet either.
I'll give you 100 dollars personally if you learn 5-0 switch crook on film and the process of learning it.
You should also review skate clothes! Rcva, volcoms etc.
Also respect for skating in the freezing. I don’t like that.. but i can’t not skate after a while or i’ll go insane

I’m skating some standard old schools like Fred Gall back in the day. I wonder if the rubber compound is any different, or the shape of the toe ect.
They are different. I'm not sure exactly how but the pros are much better.

I have 3 pairs of old schools for wearing around and let me say I’d never look at them twice as a skate shoe. Nothing that thin should come between your feet and a board. Buy some Es Accels and kickflip off a roof you’ll thank me later

Jersey Devil wow. I skated the Kyle walker. I'm 1.5 year into skating (not good at all), pretty much everyday...they lasted like 3 week, it was a waste of money.

I bought the 112s and the Gilbert's at the same time. I like the 112s a lot more. I have to buy the ultra cush. I have never tried anything other than vans. It may be time to try something new because Vans only last me about a month when skating street.

I like em but fuck make them like $80 (Australian) not $100- $140, awesome shoes but by today's standards the quality's just not good vans original soles blow out so dam quick and I don't even foot drag to stop with them like I do most shoes and I skate around switch to wear them out equally, I'm still gonna keep buying them because I like skating them just wish they were cheaper, I like skating the 2 tone navy ones, I like when they're all worn out and ratty.
