  • A group of Gum Arabic collectors from Suguta Valley thanking Acacia EPZ Limited through song and dance. Gum Arabic collection is a key source of income for residents there. In Kenya, the harvesting of Gum Arabic is common in ASALS in dry Acacia bush land.
Acacia EPZ located at EPZ Athi River collects the Gum, processes it for the export market. This further justifies the backward and forward linkage component; one of EPZ program's objective.
Gum Arabic is natural dried sap obtained from the stems and branches of two acacia species; Acacia Senegal and Acacia Seyal. It is used as a stabilizer, a binder, an emulsifier or a viscosity-increasing agent, in confectionery, soft drinks, wine, liquor, and dietary fibre.
Kenya currently produces approximately 400 metric tonnes of Gum Arabic per annum, against a production potential calculated at 12,000 tonnes.
