    Hi Everyone,
Super interesting to wake up and see all the comments this morning. There have been a wide range of perspectives ranging from some folks wondering why I (Rob) am not more angry, (some folks on Twitter (X) are calling for war). And then others are saying that it wasn't the last supper but rather the Greek feast.
So.... let's start with the calls to fight/stand up. Some of the loudest (and most famous) voices calling Christians to stand up and fight are folks that are not necessarily Christians themselves. Christianity is not about self-promotion, nor is it about standing up for your rights. People have treated Christians far far worse over the centuries, thrown to lions, tortured (for a fascinating read consult "the book of the martyrs"). And yet Christians are to love their enemies, to turn the other cheek and to pray for those that persecute them. The Christian response is never anger or fighting for oneself. Christians are called to be prepared to suffer, not to be prepared to fight.
On the other hand, I find some of the back peddling statements (i.e. it wasn't the last supper) to be pretty uncompelling. It may have been a conflation of the two references, but the halo over the center character is hard to miss. The Last supper is not some obscure Christian reference. I didn't go into my Olympic watch party looking for a fight. And if I'm honest... I find some of the statements (i.e. it was just a Greek Bacchanal) to be a bit condescending, and perhaps even disingenuous. You can't tell a person that they didn't feel insulted or disrespected. And when that many people make the same observation.... there's probably something to it.
All that said, the Christian response is love, so the best move is to let it go. If there is a God (as I believe) and if He was insulted (which I can imagine), then He doesn't need me to go on a "holy war". He can handle His own business if He wants to:). My job is to love.

Crazy that you all think it was the Last Supper ! The scene was to celebrate the origins of the Olympics (Greek mythology and culture).
Nothing to do with any religions !
The artist who made the show had to explain this morning that the scene was a Bacchanals feast with Dionysios and the Celtic goddess Sequana from whom the name Seine (the river in Paris) comes from. It was the goddess Sequana who was in the middle with a crown (not an aura).
I'm French btw and even Angevine.

Very well said! We don't accept or support much of what was portrayed at the opening ceremony, but only God can change the hearts of any human, including our own. Actually, I stopped watching soon after the offensive parts. I went back later to watch Celine's performance. Sometimes it is better to just walk away.

To love without speaking the truth is not love. And to never be angry is not christianity--we are told to be angry but "sin not." Jesus got SUPER ANGRY, but the battles he chose involved the hypocritical religious leaders. Rob, I know you're Mr. Canadian Nice Guy, but that is a FALSE RELIGION. It's the culture you grew up in, and not scriptural. There is much more to consider than a simplistic polarized only this or that choice. So please let the conversations on controversial topics take place, only guided by the Spirit and the best wisdom. Please don't shut them down.
P.S. Do gas mowers have distributors? If so, I'd take a look at it.

You did the exact right thing with the roof! I was in multi million dollar sales for years. It has to be a win-win for both sides! And one of my Sales training classes they actually set it up so that each one of us got screwed and they knew that a lot of us young people were hard-core put them to the wall tight sales people so they did this so that we would know how our customers would feel if they got screwed it was mind-boggling a great exercise, and we all learned the lesson well! If your service provider feels screwed, they certainly will not want to work with you in the future! By being generous of heart, it will come back to you I promise! What I would recommend is I would ask them after you pay them they are capable of making the rest of the repairs that you need and to give you a price on that!
There are already experienced with your roof. If you call in a new company they don’t have that familiarity or understanding! So it should be easier for them to make those repairs and I would just suggest that you list them all in detail in order for them to give you a proper quote
I would wait and see what they come back with. You’re going to need that repair done at some point anyway! I suspect they will be. generous of spirit in the quote that they come up with and probably make both of you guys happy! I learned over my ears in Sales and I. was always a top sales person for each company. I worked for if I was generous to my clients that it was much easier for me to end up making larger sales and more sales than any other sales rep! This is a perfect example of trusting God and watch and see what happens

haha, it is quite funny: I have been working on the other side of the table and have managed a contract portfolio of ~450 mEUR. Key is always good and open communication. Don't start blaming or judging. This is a small disagreement between 2 companies. There is a difference between screwing people over or to stand for what you think is right.
You could start by paying a part of the money, but still keep the money they quoted for the remaining work. Then propose to go for arbitration (typically both parties are bound by the outcome of that) regarding the remaining work as both parties clearly have a different view (miscommunication) on this.
Alternatively, you could suggest to split the bill for the remaining work to prevent the need to go for arbitration, as both parties clearly haven't done enough to prevent the miscommunication.
In all my years as a contracts specialist, I've had a couple of situation where we went for arbitration by an independent third party to clarify a certain situation and it never impacted our professional relationship.

As Rob said, every country has different customs, laws and culture. I don't know actual facts about the situation in France, but my impression from watching other chateau channels is that you want to stay on the good side of your roofer and he will take good care of you. Stick with this one for the other buildings and your relationship grows closer. I also think there is a warranty law that is pretty strong, but wouldn't cover leaks from work they didn't do.

    "Dearest Gentle Reader,
I’m about to step on some toes in regard to the Opening Ceremony at the Paris Olympics.
The headless woman was Marie Antoinette. She ruled over France and was found guilty of treason, conspiracy, and stealing from the country.
    Sound familiar?
Also, it was not the Last Supper. It was a depiction of an ancient Greek Bacchanal… because, you know, the Olympics are ancient and Greek. Surprise!
And if you didn’t know, a Bacchanalia is an uncontrollably promiscuous, extravagant, and loud party. The parties often spanned several days which honored the god of wine, Bacchus (the blue guy covered in grape vine). He is also known as Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility, later known as the god of wine and pleasure.
And finally, it was not Death on a pale horse. It was Sequana, Goddess of the Seine, the River in which the boat precession took place. She was meant to be the representation of the Olympic spirit and of Sequana.
If some of you weren’t so busy trying to end the Dept. of Education, you might know this.
Loosen the clutch on your pearls.
    Yours truly,
    Lady Francis

Bacchus = Roman. Dionysus = Greek.
      My pearls are clutched elsewhere.
Out of Thomas Jolly's own mouth (the guy who actually designed it), he spoke of his desire for inclusivity and diversity.
So where is the elderly person? 22% of France's population is over 65.
Where is the Muslim woman wearing her covering? 3% of France's population is Muslim.
Where is the person in their wheelchair?
Where is the amputee? or wounded military person? (there was an amputee in the catwalk portion)
Where is the person wearing headphones for their sensory issues?
Where is the person signing for the hearing impaired in the Dionysus diorama?
Nope, he chooses to represent a nation hosting a global gathering with basically one facet of culture who make up 12% of France's population. He chose his own w&t dream for a representation of his country for the world stage. In all the time it takes from concept to execution - NOBODY said 'dude. this is a little too close for comfort. there's a better creative decision to make, here'? I strongly doubt this. Decisions were made.
This is the trip up of wanting inclusion - why are you leaving others out and still want your work to be considered inclusive?
This is called catching yourself in your own trap.

I have loved this channel for so long, and this video strengthens that love just a little bit more. I could spout on and on about the ~53 min of content that I am always here for. Hot Tub vs Land purchase? Give me Cypress of Lebanon tree footage any day - but this video's last 2 minutes is what brought me to comment. I am not a Christian - I have an influence of faith from my childhood that is interestingly precious to me, but otherwise, I hold no affiliation to any divine or Christ figure; and yet, when Rob spoke of the "triumph of love" as depicted in the Olympic ceremonies, there was respect. You used "people", not he/she which speaks volumes - whether on purpose or not. In regards to the other scenes at the opening ceremonies, I recently read a thoughtful question presented by Dr. Becky Kennedy, "What is the 'most generous interpretation'". Rob stated, "Why would you intentionally offend a group of people? {sic} It did not feel like that was France to me."
Please continue to share all the wonderful nuances of living in France and chaperoning the renovation of this beautiful home.

I have always thought that you should rebuilt the swimming pool because the students will enjoy it in the heat. I would have built a swimming pool before the hot tub.
After reading several of the comments here, I have changed my mind. I would have prioritized either a new roof on the stables or bought the neighboring property.
The stable because if the roof collapses completely, it will be a more expensive job.
Buy the neighboring property because imagine if it would be sold to someone who wants to build something commercial on it, for example a large supermarket with a large car park. I've heard some other Chateau channels say when they were looking for a Chateau, they came across some where that was the case.

I am 79 years old and in my neighborhood I have one of the largest yards to mow! I have a small lawnmower because it’s easier for me to handle at my age. It’s only 16 inches wide so it takes a while. I use a battery powered lawnmower and the thing about it is, it keeps me from overdoing it and having a heart attack attack so when the battery stopped running, I take a break! We have had torrential rain for several weeks now, so the grass is intense! So I suspect it will end up taking me at seven days to finish mowing my lawn so I can certainly appreciate what you’re against. It would take me months to do the château.

Hi Rob, for the tractor if you had old fuel in it you probably want to clean out the carburetor. They can get gummed up with fuel residue or dirt that blocks the small passages where the fuel needs to go. You can probably find some instruction videos on line for that. Is the plug coming out wet (and smelling like gas) or does it stay dry? That's usually an indicator of what may be happening. 🙂 Mark

Regarding the situation with the roof contractor: I would stress to them that you are very happy with the work they have done and the way they have treated you guys and that you value the professional relationship you have developed. Then state that there might be a miscommunication between you and them and that you would like to propose to go for arbitration to solve the disagreement between both parties. Don't forget this is all business (especially to them, you guys have more an emotional connection with the work). Alternatively, you can also suggest to split those extra costs to prevent going for arbitration. It is all about communication: if you stay polite and respectful, it shouldn't impact your relationship.

I’ve seen an apparatus used behind a tractor to remove weeds in gravel. It is a bar with chain attached that is drug behind the tractor and agitates the rocks pulling up the weed as it goes. Might work for your square (which is beautiful by the way!) 🚜🌱🌱🌱

Rob, a 10yr warranty is standard in France, and I believe a requirement by law. That said, your Mairie (Mayor) might have been helpful in the case of your disagreements with the roofers. That “SIRET” number issued by the govt, that allows contractors to work, but can also be withdrawn if they are found to be in violation of obligations of work. A simple consultation with your Mairie might have helped.

Thank you Rob for explaining the TRUTH about real love! When one has a biblical world view, you see clearly that these displays were completely inappropriate for the Olympics where children are watching and where young people may be misled and confused by what they witness. Shame on the leaders for not putting a stop to it before it even became a part of the opening day ceremonies. To me it shows how weak, afraid and twisted people in power have become and frankly, it makes me really disgusted and sad. The spiritual battle rages, does it not?

Hi guys. Just a suggestion that may end up saving you money when you undertake a big contract like this. I reckon it would be worth your while to hire a local builder or project manager just to have a look and give you advice upfront on what you should expect. It would avoid confusion on your part as to what should be included, and also the contractor would be aware that there was someone around who knew the iob and spoke french, therefore may hold them to account if needed.. I know $$ are a big consideration, but could be money well spent on the bigger jobs?

this chateau and garden park are always so beautiful - great you overcome all obstacles step by step - and glad you mentioned that ceremony - we were early off, already that color pink on gold stairs was too much for me 🙂- good Lord saved us - still saw that lady touching her belows (but -M. Jackson and Madonna (what a name) did that before- old fashioned meanwhile) - and the last supper pic - is it in France? I thought it was in Italy - many people nowadays do not know what happens and maybe it leads to discussions .. God is so much bigger.. and the secret of eucharistie is to be known by many - his ways are mysterious (impenetrable) at times - maybe people notice wrong ways better now ? 🙏

I respect your view of France and I am glad you mentioned that the ceremonies didnt reflect the France you know. I was offended with some aspects of the ceremonies and therefore having a degraded view of France the country. We are called to love our neighbors and your take on the Olympics have made it easier to be less offended. I do think they mocked God, which is not a wise thing to do. But God can defend Himself and Im called to love my neighbor.

Rob, you can destroy a piano tuning it in a bad way... the pins are in wood and if you put pressure on the pin in a crooked way it will start to make the holes bigger and then after time leaves you with a piano that isnt tunable. (to be a good tuner you need to tune a piano every day for months)

“Bacchanalia, or Dionysia, In Greco-Roman religion, any of the festivals of the wine god Bacchus (Dionysus), which probably originated as fertility rites. The ceremony was over the top but French culture is so different from American or Canadian. But then, they think we are rude because we don't say Bon Jour to everyone and do the cheek kissy thing. Our cultures aren't the same. But I still love the French.
