Probably my favourite SINGLE of all time by any artist. 'Cars' and 'Complex' from 1979 had made a HUGE impression on me and I couldn't wait to hear Gary Numan's new material. I clearly remember the day I bought the single, on the week of its release. May 1980. The first time I'd bought a single BEFORE it was in the charts. As a 15 year old school boy I was ridiculed mercilessly for liking Gary Numan but I learnt at an early age it's best to take no notice of what other people think!

It's funny how now adays listening to Indie rock stations, all of this keyboard driven music is making a come back. Just had to wait 40 years. Gary Newman only started out wanting to make enough money to buy a corvette. Awesome

I remember being in a pub in East Leake, Notts, and someone put this on the dukebox. I was 12 then, in 1979. I nearly swallowed my crisp packet whole - it was a new world. I'd never heard ought like it and it changed me and my mates forever. A new age had begun. This was closely followed by Visage, Fade to Grey and Ashes to Ashes by Bowie. God, what a time.. and I feel so privileged to have been there, when it happened.

Mid 1979 when Are Friends Electric and autumn 79 with Cars by Numan, then Buggles ‘video killed the radio star’ and The Police was the start of the shift away from 1970s disco and punk music, into the new wave and electronic pop stuff.
Summer 1980 was start of the 80s properly with Ashes to Ashes by Bowie topping the charts in August.

Gary Numan is hands down one of the most underappreciated musicians of all time. This song is phenomenal... he's made other good stuff other than just The Pleasure Principle. A truly innovative musician who should've received more recognition for his work... although, Musicians still know and appreciate him. I hated Beck when I saw him at Riot Fest, but it was pretty dope that he at least brought Gary Numan on stage to cover Cars.

When I was about 11, Vice City came out and it had a song called "Cars" by some dude named Gary Numan. I really liked the song and so did my buddy. So we went to his place and went on his computer and typed "Gary Numan" into Limewire. "We Are Glass" was the first one we clicked on... I became obsessed in that moment. Since then, I've listened to every album of Numan's. "We Are Glass" will forever be one of my favorites.

We are young we can break
    Watch us fall
    We can take some train
    Down to the sea
We are glass, we are glass
We are real you can touch
    Just for now
    And then say
'Hey you, which way is down'
We are glass, we are glass
We are strong we run though
    We have time
    And to you I'm just
    One of those boys
We are glass, we are glass
    We are cold
    We're not supposed to cry
But it's all just a thought
    So here am I
We are glass, we are glass
    They run fast
    Impressions of the floors inviting
Stay with me, stay with me
    They run past
    With telephones they scream
Well would you turn all this down
    Turn all this down
You are replaced you are you
    And our dreams are real

Jordan Peele's film "Us" must be inspired by elements from these, or something that inspired these.

I loved this style of bringing synthesizer piano sound to the forefront rather than guitars, especially by Gothic punk rockers who display snobby artistic facial expressions, but only the British can come up with musical expressions like this, I doubted Numan would be American when I heard his songs. The mood and lyrics are often spacey psychological curiosities, an escape from the same old same old conventional world we are often exposed to. He's very talented in my opinion

What a song. What can I say ? Incredible - perfect Numan. Melody after melody. Great voice and the rhythm guitar on the last verse is sublime. Listen to it !!!. Classic. Hands down blows everything from the time out of the water

I can get enough of those soaring, haunting synth lines in this song. It's just perfect.
They remind me of a theremin in the way that they sound like a ghost choir.

It's really too bad the radio only played cars from Gary Numan. I'm finding more of his music for the first time.(finally) I'm listening to We Are Glass and it's really good music. So he definitely was not a one hit wonder and left the music scene. He's got a lot of music I'm going to finally enjoy listening to for the first time. He's got some great stuff far beyond just Cars. Gary Numan is a damn good musician. You DJ's out there really need to your homework and present these works on the air!!!!! We've been missing a lot of great stuff out there you should be playing and we should have that opportunity of listening too. Go the extra mile and play us more music from artists like Gary Numan. Anyway I'm going to go back and listen to more Gary Numan and listen to what I've been missing 40+ years later.

This is when I thought he was at his best...The Telekon Era and the Tele-Tour. Way ahead of it's time. And to think the BBC banned this video for being to violent.....Wxxxxxs.

I was in London in early '81. Bought "Telekon" at Virgin Records. "We Are Glass" is still one of my faves. I played that cassette on my Walkman (a pretty new gadget in 1981) until the tape wore out.

He is literally the human embodiment of cool. Godly, charismatic, in a package of authenticity. The~ artist.

In these early videos he always comes across as frosty and intimidating but apparently it was just a persona to help him cope with shyness and stage fright. I wonder how many at the time knew that underneath the persona was a really genuine, warm and friendly guy.
