      I mean he was noticed when selling his work. So maybe any writer or artist who works hard to complete a piece and attends conventions to sell their hard work get a chance to move up in the world. I say its blood, sweat and tears not luck. It's both luck and hard work.
      He wouldn't be at the convention if he wasn't pursuing his goal to sell his books (AKA working hard to get recognition for his work)
      And he wouldn't be featured in Webtoon if he wasn't in the right place at the right time.
      He also wouldn't be featured if his work was crap, because the editor only came back because he knew how good his work was.
      Luck is a factor, but is not the main factor.

    Success is pretty much always a combination of hard work and luck. Yes it was lucky to meet that editor. But it takes hard work and endless hours to get yourself in the position to be able to take advantage of the luck that life sometimes presents to you. You did the work to get there. Developed and polished skills. Created multiple demonstrations of those skills. Then the luck happens. And once it does, it's right back to the hard work part again. Building and producing, creating and developing.

      It takes time. I think you're comic looks really good. I didn't have time to read it, so I can't really say anything about the story. It takes time to build up readers. You've only posted 4 episodes and there really isn't a consistent update schedule. Posting once-a-month is fine. But posting every week, then every 3 months, then 2 episodes at once. Confuses readers and make them think you won't finish the story, so they don't want to start it. Four episodes is a lot of work and you should be really proud, but that's only 4 out of the 100s or 1000s of episodes you'll make in your life. Give it time.

      Walter Ostlie heat thank you! I checked out your other video and it helped with most of my questions. I just have one more. If you’re webcomic picks up in popularity can you pitch it to say Netflix or another studio to become a series or movie. Or do you have to wait for the time frame on that contract to end.

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think they have a similar clause to most publishers which gives them a certain percentage of any media deals made around the 20% range. I'd have to pull out my contract to be sure, but its also a few years old at this point and things may have changed. Webtoon may also have a first right of refusal, meaning they can make you the same offer you're getting from Netflix and you'd have to make a deal with Webtoon instead of Netflix. That's all standard contract stuff I think that you'll find in most of these types of deals.

      If you have spoken with an editor and they've asked to hear from you, then definitely reach out to them. If you've tracked down their emails from other methods, I wouldn't do it. Most likely they'd ignore the unsolicited submission.
      The best way to do without the editors request is just to start posting your comic on webtoon, engage your audience, and consistently produce good content. They are watching the discover comics. It just won't be a quick process in most cases.

      I want to make a video about schedules. Basically it boils down to treating it like a job or school or anything most people don't want to do. You just have to do it from the hours 9 to 5 or whatever time you have. Maybe it won't be the best, but it will be done and that's what's important. Do the job. Good luck.

    I regret not finishing my webtoon 2017. I stopped because I had to finish school. But now, I want to pursue a different career: to be a comic artist. It’s hard at first. Getting an audience to like your work. Because for me that’s what makes me motivate to continue. That someone is expecting to read the next pages of my webtoon. What do you think is Webtoon’s criteria to find a comic to be featured? Aside from updating consistently and good storyline. I really planned out the storyline of my current webtoon. But... I wouldn’t stop reaching my dream 💪☹️

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Consistency and story are the biggest for sure. They need to know you can keep a schedule. Next to that I would think community. Are the readers active, is the creator engaging with them, is it supportive and positive. Of course art is always a consideration. Good luck with your project, it's tough but is worth it if you love and have a passion for it. Get it!

    I started 2016 and I'm still into it.
    Ok so here's a little story (looking for someone that might relate to this). I started drawing as a hobby when I was a kid. I even start to make my own stories young. BUT my drawings weren't that great because lack of practice, don't know what I want for my future, and I even suck at coloring, though "it has potential" (some people say). Fast forward to college I took animation major because I thought that is where I want to be. Then, LINE happened. Their first contest took place back in 2016 and all I know was traditional drawings but remember I mentioned I've been making stories snce? When I heard about the contest something sparked in my brain I couldn't explain.. and then I said it. "Animation is not my thing.. I lost track of what I really wanted". I know nothing about digital drawing back then. 2016 is when I first draw with the digital pen. It took me until today to be good at drawing with tablet. It wasnt only the tablet I practice, it was also anatomy, coloring, shadings, shadow, lights, storyplots (how, why, when, timeline, etc), character expressions, dialogues, composition.. ALL this.. because of the contest. Because this is what I want and I'm still making my webtoon until today
    Soo anyone else with somewhat shitty story but somehow is satisfied of the outcome?

      Is your comic called Leaf Page or is more than one person working on a comic called leaf paging? I think more than 1 person can work on a comic. Most traditional american comics have at least 4 people working on it. They are all doing different things. writer, artist, colorist, letterer.
      But if you mean all different people all drawing, I think it is also possible. Me and a group of artists started a thing called Comic Chaos. Ooooo!! I'm subscribing and reading your Webtoon looks right up my alley!! Also, will watch all your vids, keep the grind up my good man everyone sees the end result but staying motivated and enjoying the process is huge
    You'll become a big youtuber based on the quality of your content and as a recommendation try incorporating your personality in more, lretty sure subscribers/ viewers would feel mkre connection if ya put out how ya are
    I'm a Writer myself and have been practicing drawing every day for 2 months straight with no day breaks to design the characters, world, atmosphere, etc
    Have over 400+ quality over quantity ideas/ projects written in various stages of different genres over the last 4 years for Webtoons/ Anime but the first and only one Im starting with and doing is my Webtoon project...
    Spirit Walker
    Theres too many ideas to do so might sell most of my IP after developing them to a certain point where they are useable and make a few myself

      Thank you very much for the sub, I really appreciate it and all your kind words. That's awesome that you've started drawing. I really can't recommend it enough for writers who want to make comics. Drawing your own comic will teach you so much about writing them.
      I think it can be really smart, business wise, if you can take all your ideas for IPs and try to break it down into a short 60-80 page story. Then you can use those 80 page comics, which are faster to make, as commercials to sell your IPs.
      Good luck!

    Is it ok for a comic to have better art over time? I am a pretty good artist, and i have a comic to upload. But the art improves over each panel as i learn how to use krita. (It's been nearly 3 years since i last used digital before i started making my comic) is it ok to do that, and be open about the reason why?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All artists improve over time, even great artists get better everyday. So it is perfectly fine to start your comic now and get better as you go. You don't really need to tell people about it, no reason to make them focus on it. Just make your comic, let them enjoy it, and that's it.

    I’ve landed on your channel somehow and I find you interesting. I have never read any of your comics, like I said ,I just stumbled upon your channel and I’ve been trying to find myself after high school. Drawing has always been my passion and also story telling . Comic book writer has never been in my mind until last week and I wanted to write a fan fiction (also my original stories),but I don’t know if I get copyrighted even if I dedicated and announce the original creators , but I was going to put my fanfic comic on TH-cam and probably monetize it. So enough of the rambling, I know writers especially comic book writers on web toon update every week and I also know it’s a full time hour job. 60 hours , probably more a week. If you write more than one comic , do you get paid more ? How fast is your drawing pace and how do you get so many pages out efficiently ? I am very detailed with my art, so I’m practicing my pace and efficiency/effort.

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you do more than one comic, you'd get paid for both. Drawing pace for me is around 2 pages a days or 12 panels a day. Drawing a lot and being comfortable with how you draw is how you get faster at drawing.
      Good luck with your comics. Would love to see your own original stories and characters.

      Thanks for the information ! I’ll consider in reading your comic when I get a chance, specifically write in in my notes so I won’t forget. But for my comic, it won’t be until ...... a long time, at least get started in a few months. I’m studying my writing skills and as I study my writing skills. I am also going to do different art styles between doodle/realistic vice versa. Again, thank you for answering. 🙏

    WOW SO COOL!! I will like to publish my own stories on webtoon just like how others do. Doing their own stories and publishing them on there, but I'm not sure if I can do it for free. Do we need permission to upload? How do things work to be able to publish our own stories on webtoon?

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can upload to webtoon for free. But you won't be making any money right away and it takes a lot of readers to even start making a little money from Webtoon directly. But if you have a small loyal amount of readers, you can run Kickstarters or Patreon to make money.

    What age should creators be to publish on Webtoon? can they get paid?

    • @walterostlie

      you have to be at least 13 to publish on Webtoon. Once you can do that you should be able to get paid as long as you have a bank or money account like paypal. You may need parent's permission.

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you just post your comic online and don't do any promotion, then not many people will find it. You have to tell people about it, make friends with other creators, share the comic everywhere.

    • @christyau6668
      @christyau6668 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter Ostlie how do I make friends with other creators? I’m afraid they would look down on me :(

    • @walterostlie
      @walterostlie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christyau6668 Most creators are pretty friendly, but same as life, not everyone is friendly and a lot of people are busy. Really the best thing to do is find people who are at the same place in their journey as you. It allows you to connect more easily, because you will have the same kind of problems, challenges, and successes. It is easier to build a friendship. The best ice breaker is fan art. If you find someone who seems nice, draw a fan art of their character and then message them to say hey, really like your comic and did this drawing of "character", hope you like. Then later you can write again and ask a question about something you're working on, maybe ask for their opinion. If they don't seem very responsive, just move on, sometimes the timing just doesn't work out. But I don't think they'd look down on you, unless they are butt-heads, and then who cares about them anyways.
