You have absolutely no idea how great I'm feeling by just looking at you speaking so passionately about language learning. I just got goosebumps... (the good kind) And I think whenever I encounter bumps in the road in the future, for learning languages, I'm gonna come back to this video, watch it again, and get a boost!
I had the same exact experience just yesterday, with my Mandarin. The first time being in a room where so much of mandarin (with some Korean) was being spoken. I could somewhat follow the conversation, honestly I'm quite proud of myself, but oml it was exhausting. I've learnt a lot about Taiwan and it's people. The amount of respect and acceptance i felt was awesome. I'm now still hungover and still studying from the motivation last night gave me. 加油加油
Woooohooo that’s awesome TryLingual Lin! 😄🙌🏼 congratulations on that experience! Wish I could have been a fly on the wall to see it happen for you ☺️ Keep up the great work! I hope I can learn a lot about Taiwan and its people, too 💪🏼
Thank you so much for sharing your passion and experiences! You are definitely inspiring. I look forward to the daily videos. I love learning languages and I love connecting with people. It is so rewarding to connect with people through shared language.
Thanks for this lovely comment Tamara! It’s really encouraging to know that you find my videos inspiring and look forward to them! I agree that it is sooo rewarding connecting with people through a shared language. I just love to think about how if it weren’t for that language, this moment would not have been possible. It simply blows my mind and I love it. Keep up all the great work with your language studies!!
I love your videos! It's like a convo (with the exception that we're listeners only mostly and it's okay :P) with a friend in a fav cafe :) Your stories are so inspiring, comforting, and motivating to learn languages :D
I truly appreciate how genuine and authentic you are. I also admire how well you articulate yourself. I am always thankful when one of your videos are recommended in my feed. Thank you for continuing to share your wisdom, experiences, knowledge and advice with us.
OMG Robin you are such an inspiration. I started learning French 5 years ago and this lockdown I have spent almost all my time studying. Oral comprehension has been my struggle but it is improving. Just to say Robin I was planning on passing the DELF B2 in September or October, however you have inspired me to go to the highest level. Thank you so much.
These are such beautiful and inspiring stories! This was the perfect video to end my day with. In this video, you mentioned that you've had a lot of great experiences with podcasts and books, I would love to hear the part two of this video! I often have trouble with finding content in the languages I want to learn. To be fair, I'm also pretty bad at doing this in English, too. Do you have any tips as to how to find interesting podcasts/TH-cam channels/books to read? Looking forward to your video tomorrow!
Thank you for this wonderful comment Shane! I have to say I was SO in the moment while recording this and was really hoping that would shine through in the video. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Good for you for your experience in Lyon with the lyonnais! My word, we are one of the most closed off people in France! I was born and live in Lyon and I know several foreigners and witnessed their struggle to make friends and settle in!
Absolutely loving this series Robin. Such great inspiration and motivation! In fact I have made your videos part of my daily language learning routine between my french and italian listening. Motivation plays such a big part and your videos are perfect. Excellent work Robin!!
Not only language skills but you also have amazing storytelling! I have been watching your videos since maybe 2 or 3 weeks and I love your channel do today I subscribed! Good luck with your TH-cam journey!
I had a hint of what you experienced in Romanian, but I wasn't quite at the level to follow everything, but it was definitely surreal ! It was like tuning into a very narrow radio frequency and hearing things in clear detail!
Wow that’s awesome! I like the way you describe it as tuning into a very high frequency radio, almost like that moment when you turn the dial left and right and the sound suddenly comes in clearly 👌🏼
Another awesome video Robin! I’m truly inspired to persist with all of my language learning goals. I’ll be keeping this one in my favourites for when I need some encouragement and reminders to keeping going! Thank you again
I don't know why but I feel more happy while I am listening to you. This video might be the third one I watched but I got already more excited, thanks to you, though I was motivated enough to learn more foreign languages. You do inspire me!
Im sitting here feeling like you are talking about me, especially in the beginning with feeling like I wasnt clever enough and felt like I sucked at everything, and here I am now, as an English person, fluent in European Portuguese and working on my Swedish and French, omg this really hit me, thanks for the video
Thanks for these videos. I've been learning Swedish for just over 6 weeks, and today I took it slower to watch motivational stuff. I've been focusing on Duolingo and supplementing with Youtbe videos, and I have completed almost 60% of the Swedish tree
Hey Robin! I get a positive kick to learn my Japanese language and I train English understanding. A day without good coffee and your everyday talks is a wasted day. どうもありがとうございました.
I really can relate to that "barrier going down" feeling. My chinese isn't on THAT high of a level but it is enough to socialize and I spent a lot of time getting to know the culture, doing some kung fu, some circus, eating all the local food.. My best friend I made there was my roommate in a language school I was in for a month and we were the only chinese / foreign "couple" that ended up spending our entire freetime together and even doing weekend trips out of the city. We would naturally flow between speaking some English and then again chines so we both improved together and it was no "oh we must talk X for half an hour then the other one gets their turn"... But just authentic conversations where one of us would not be able to express ourselves perfectly at some point, switch to our mothertongue mid sentence and then we'd get stuck in that languahe for a while until if would happen to the other person and wemd switch back. She was so thrilled about me not shying back from eating all sorts of organs when we went for hot pot 😂 Or eating duck tongues or necks.. We would eat with her other chinese friends and they all welcomed me as partnof the group and even while my chinese wasn't that perfect they all had worse english than my chinese so they really had a high appreciation of my efforts to learn their language and culture. I'm even invited to stay with her famoly for a while if I return to China so I could improve even more with them being my hostfamily
One of my biggest problems is I don´t have enough money to travel around the and sharing experiences with foreing speakers. I´m improving my English alone to have a high level and I want to give all I´ve been learnig for so much time in those people and feeling that the effort was so worth. Nice video by the way!!!
Hey, Robin! Can you discuss milestones when it comes to language learning? What are some good benchmarks or milestones to signify that one has clearly leveled-up in their language journey? Thanks so much!
Robin, I agree that living abroad doesn't mean that someone will become fluent in a language automatically. I've been living abroad for many years and I don't find myself fluent in the language by any means. I'd rather say, I've gained practical level but not fluent and that's only thanks to my effort. I'm still pretty far from a proficiency, however, I've been working on it. I like your videos that are so inspiring and joyful to listen to.
It's getting late and I decided to watch this video instead of reading my Korean version of Harry Potter and I'm glad I did. Your video is really inspiring but also a little humbling. You've got more than a lifetime of language learning already under your belt and you're not even 30 yet. At least we have one thing in common. A proper appreciation of coffee.
I have a question. I am using anki to remember vocabulary And people says that always use sentences instead of single word but the problem is whenever that card comes i recognize the card by looking at other words in the sentence. For example i want to learn the word Owner So i makes a card- this car has no owner But the problem is whenever that card comes i recognize the "this car has no" part and gusse that next word has to be owner. But i dont remmeber the word owner. I dont know if i was able to explain it since my english is not good
Robin may I ask you where are you from originally? You said you studied in UK but you don’t have the accent. I also learn to achieve near native level. Best regards from Brazil 🇧🇷
Hi Professor X! Thanks for your question, it seems that a lot of people are getting confused by or interested in my accent lately! Maybe it could be a nice video topic 😄 I originally grew up in the UK until I was 16. After that I moved to the US, but after university I did live in the UK a few more times (7 months was the longest after that). I really appreciate all of your insightful comments 🙂 Obrigado pelo apoio! 🙏🏼
@@RobinMacPhersonFilms my pleasure commenting here. I always watch your videos. You, Luca Lampariello, MattvsJapan and others are polyglots I admire a lot. Ahhh so that's why it is tough to guess from where you are haha! Great journey of yours. And yeah it would be a nice video for sure! ;)
@@o_felipe_reis I'm from the UK and he definitely has the accent 😄 I think his 'o' as in 'Robin' has become Americanised (a capital sin!) but his vowels in general are shorter and less nasal than an American's would be - and the way he pronounces the 'uh' sound is a dead giveaway of being from mid/north England. Note for example the word 'country' and how he says 'coontry' rather than 'cahntry' - or the word 'just' he prounounces 'joost' rather than 'jahst'. Also we English often pronounces 'tu' as 'choo' whereas Americans don't. 'Opporchoonity' rather than 'opportunity' for example. Hope that's useful lol x
When you say "route" and it sounds like the American, "rout". I tell my kids not to use words like Americans. Grey is not Gray, for example. It's just different.
I love learning natural languages, but for me the sensation of my cognitive skills expanding day by day came from learning a particular programming language: Haskell.
Absolutely inspiring! I have to ask.. How do you manage all these languages while working a full-time job? Since I started working I've been feeling like time is slipping away (I work in IT as well) and I've been struggling to practice my language skills. Un bacio da Napoli (appreciated the comment about hospitality
The only language I have actually learnt to full fluency is English (I am even told I sound English when I speak), however, I started really learning English at the age of 10, so I could not really appreciate the fact of being surrounded by English for the first time until I got to go to university in Scotland, which wasn't as exciting for the language, but more for the experience of living alone for the first time. I am a polyglot, because I speak 4 languages, but 3 of them are my native languages... Now I am learning Japanese and I really hope I'll be able to get to the level I have achieved in English

There’s an amazing podcast in English called ‘The Grown Up Show’ by Matt D’avella, you should definitely check it out.
English books to read? Go to "Jesse the reader"'s channel. And "The Clockwork Reader". They both give brilliant recs!
