End of the day it's Duran's fault he let himself get out of shape and let himself get into in a position where he decided to quit. That being said, some things we can gather are:
    1. Duran in Montreal and Duran in New Orleans had two very different levels of focus and fitness.
    2. Leonard did not want any parts of a fully fit Duran in the rematch and deliberately pushed for a fight with a compromised Duran.

YUP, like Hector says, Duran trained for almost "5" months for the first fight w/ Ray. He was so chiseled and his cardio and overall motivation was the highest it had been since the rematch w/ DeJesus !
But, Here's a part of the story NO ONE has heard but Jim Jacobs, me and a few others, Roberto and Felicidad among them obviously...Jesus I hope I dont get killed for sayin all this..Its been YEARS man....OK, here goes. I used to buy and trade fight films w/ Jimmy as he had at that time the most comprehensive boxing library in existence. I bought some old fight films from Jim and we talked on the phone a few times, but I had never "met" him yet.
Jim was a "Class Act", a true gentleman in an unsavory world, and was respected by everyone. He helped Mike Tyson out a lot at one point and was universally loved, seriously...So anyway I find out he's in town and Im looking to get some old films of Olivares and he winds up coming to one of my gigs so we end up meeting in person in California.
The band goes on break I sit down with Jimmy and the conversation turns inevitably to the subject of Roberto Duran. And we both agree he's the best light weight ever which sets the stage for our next dialogue, which was via telephone almost a decade later.
This is what Promoter and a legend himself Jim Jacobs told me concerning that rematch with Ray. I will never forget it because, like I said, Jim "knew" I was a Duran fan from the old days, so he relished the conversation, and he told me Duran wept in the limo on the way to the airport after the rematch because he "KNEW" he hadnt been prepared and he KNEW "why"....
So this is what Jacobs told me that night. Jim said that Duran literally had to take diuretics' and train in a rubber corset to make weight for the 2nd fight w/ Ray. He made "weight" but as they say "it wasnt GOOD weight".....
and here's what very few know....Duran's wife had a gambling issue and "they" , Roberto and his wife had an arrangement"...she didnt press him about his affairs and he didnt press her about her gambling...
And thats how their marriage worked "at that time"....Anyway, Ray decides to fight Duran again and catch him out of shape because any real fight fan and fighter KNEW Duran at that stage of his life "blew up" after a big fight...
Anyway, and Duran had blown up to 190+ before their 2nd fight. What Jimmy told "ME" was that Roberto's wife was into the mob and they were starting to press him for the $.So Eleta decides w/ Don King to make this money and of course this would help Duran out at the same time, and thats "WHY" the fight went down like it did.
He told Freddie Brown to stop the fight after the 5th round because Duran "knew" he was unable to cut off the ring like he did in their first fight, because he was outta shape AND Ray was a lot more elusive then in their first fight, and Duran did NOT want to get embarrassed.
He told Freddie Brown to "stop it" but Brown refused saying "The money's already in a bank in Panama, we'll never get out of here alive if we stop it" You beat Lou Bizzarro when you had diarrhea", and Roberto replied "this isnt Lou Bizzarro"! Duran fought the 6th and 7th and then when he returned to his corner again asked Brown to stop it and when he refused Duran said "if you dont stop the fight I will quit in the middle of the ring and then YOU can think of something to tell the world"
Duran, the DURAN that beat Ray in Montreal, who trained for 4 and 1/2 months and was in such shape he came in 2 LBs "under" the welter limit, THAT Duran beats any welter alive at that time, including Hearn's.
    ANYONE !
ps. I have NO agenda here other than the truth and I will most likely erase this soon because it makes me nervous to repeat this shit on account I dont feel like gettin shot, but I SWEAR on all things Sacred AND Un-holy, THIS is what Jim said to me that night some 30 + years ago !
Perhaps Jim embellished some things, I cant say. It certainly wasnt like him to be anything but honest and dependable. Jim sadly passed away from leukemia some time ago but he was known as an honest, integral man in a shitty business and like I said, everyone liked him.Ask Iron Mike about Jim Jacobs, or Teddy Atlas.....or anyone who was around and is still alive who knew Jim....
    Anyway, thats it
Peace everyone, salud Roberto Duran !

At 4:44 it was nine years as opposed to seven and yes, Roberto was 38 by December of 1989 and appeared to want one more payday rather than be properly conditioned. At 4:47 Roberto was actually still 29 for the second fight. And I believe the story about diarrhea. That would have been too humiliating for him to continue. Not saying I condoned him quitting (that was unfathomable). He should have handled his training and diet with proper care. He spent the next 20 years erasing the shame of No Mas.

Duran's shame.....was gone after he beat Davey Moore and then fought a prime Hagler and almost took his Belt. Duran was a legend and it wiped away the 'no mas' debacle. Duran doesn't really care what others think, your shame theory doesn't hold water.

    • @mattjean2652

He never erased it. He was never the same again. Never trained as hard. Most of the time was just collecting a paycheck. All those fans from the 70s were bamboozled into thinking we were gonna see the fiery master but rarely did he ever deliver. He was just a shell going through the motions most of the time. The 3rd Leonard fight he stopped fighting before the bout was halfway through. Like he had an unspoken agreement with Leonard. He woke up when Leonard got cut late. But it was too little too late. Moore was a novice pro. Barkley was built for him.(but, I admit was a tremendous effort). Tainted legacy! It pissed me off! Shoulda NEVER happened!

Nah. Duran was never the same after he beat Leonard, he was gifted all those money that he had never had before, so like anybody in poverty. He went all out. He started to f hoes, eat enormous amount of luxurious foods, and do whatever the hell he wanted. When the rematch finally happened, Duran was in a hazy, clenched ass-cheeks, and getting humilitated inside the ring. And that was when he quit. It wasn’t the No Mas fight that made Duran never the same, it was after he was gifted tons of money after his first fight with Leonard. This was when Duran redeemed himself and beat Davey Moore, who’s in his physical prime compared to Duran’s past years. He beat Iran Barkley, who you say is built for Duran… Which is dumb because this is the same exact guy who beat Hearns and is bigger than Duran. So instead of undermining Duran, (if you are) I suggest watching a few of his fights.

Is the glass half empty or half full....Yeah he looked bad at times, and it was tough watching him lose to Laing and Robbie Sims, 2 guys he would have literally murdered at 147, but beating Pipino Cuevas a guy who was world champion at age 18 and still in his mid 20s when he fought Roberto, THAT was a great accomplishment,
And as for Davey being a "novice", Moore knocked out Wilfredo Benitez in 2 rounds Charlie Weir in the 5th, Ayub Kalule who fought Ray Leonard for the belt was KOed in the 10th, and Davey was world champ at age 24, not bad for a novice.....
and Barkley beat Hearns "twice", and if thats a 12 round fight w/ Marvin, Duran wins that too, so cmon man, what are you really angry about?!

Ray even says it today, that the 2nd Duran fight is not a satisfying memory. Duran didn't give it to him and Ray knows he had to fight a lesser Duran, to 'win'. When they were both at their best, Duran wins. Ray cherry picked some more as he 'retired' a few times. Never fighting someone without having some sort of advantage. Tommy Hearns weighed in at 145, the morning of the fight, for their 1st fight. How does that happen? MONEY TALKS. I heard that Tommy was very upset about it, that was on Steward.

    2) Not being able to catch Leonard, was Leonard's Fault because he refused to play the game of the first fight..( Where Leonard gave exactly as much if not Way More than he received...!!!!!)
    3) duran during the first fight won on decision, yet in the eyes of all whites spectators and commentators, and sellout don kong, duran KOed Leonard at least 50 times during the fight...Poor duran was Obviously robbed and was Such a Classy guy (with comments on Leonard's wife, headbutting and elbowing during the fight; All Honorable traits and Worthy of a Great Champion that he was ..!!!)

1: Whats "White spectators/commentators" have to do with two "Brown Men" fighting?! .....Half of the Cats in Durans entourage were "Black" Afro-Panamanians, friends he grew up with from Robertos neighborhood...
As to their first fight, Ray did not dish out MORE than he received. He was rocked several times in that fight, not just that 2nd round and never once had Roberto in trouble....It was a great fight and closer than many say. I know because I saw it "Live" but the truth is what it is.
Even Ray admitted he was beaten and was obsessed on revenge as any real competitor would have been, and that his plan was to catch Duran outta shape. And no one at that time would have argued with you regarding Duran's psych tactics, which involved getting Ray upset by virtue of insulting Juanita.

    3. Every time I turn around there’s a new excuse from someone else on why Duran quit. 🙄🙄🙄
