I’m really shocked at how bad Charles’ schooldays were - that wasn’t bullying, it was torture.
My uncle was in the Royal Navy, and served on a warship with Prince Charles. I remember him saying that Charles worked exactly the same as everyone else, no special treatment, and was just a decent bloke.

Thank goodness. Imagine if it is vice versa ....we would end up with a scandalous spoilt king! Of course many people disliked young Charles, but honestly -- how many of us can claim that we were angels at that age? Especially growing up in such a privilege environment? Similar to P. Edward (who had learned from his mistake and had grown to be a dedicated working royal), King Charles too has grown to become a kind, sensitive and dedicated king. God bless him!

Hi Shauna - thank you so much for your take on this book - I’ve always felt sorry for Charles - I believe he did try to do his best & what was expected of him - I think he really only came into his own once he married Camilla & then became King. He seems like someone who has done it tough & although I’m not a full on monarchist I hope he has a long, happy, healthy reign - he definitely deserves it.

He did his best with William and Harry's education too ... ONLY that he has been MANIPULATED a lot by The Late Lady Diana's antics during and after their separation ...
So happy that Catherine helps William and Charles to embrace their father and son relationship and closer after the birth of their children ... As Arthur Edwards stated, he never liked going on a tour with young William because he is a hot temper but Catherine and the Middleton really changed him to be a better son, husband and father...

Yes. Charles was never going to be quite 'normal', with the upbringing and life he has led, so his many quirks are at least understandable, but no-one has ever accused him of being lazy, and his business initiatives and charitable works are both numerous and highly successful. Andrew, by contrast, has never initiated any business or charitable enterprises of his own, and now that he has had all his military and private patronages revoked it is hard to know what he fills his time with, other than golf and riding.

I think it's truly evil that schoolboys were actually encouraged to inflict pain to torture freshmen as part of hazing. Even a tough boy would find it hard not to crumble, let alone a sensitive, quiet type. Perhaps having endured such treatment & a very strict, harsh father, Charles is bending over backwards to show love to H by taking all the mud slinging without doing anything about it.
Totally agree that all the big fish got away & only Ghislaine is in jail & given what had happened to Epstein, she's definitley not naming any names.

Wonderful book review, Shauna, thank you. I've often wondered if Catherine's project about the importance of the early years of babies/children was influenced in part by Charles' upbringing in his formative years, basicially being abandoned by his parents (so they could enjoy themselves in Malta) - nannies and grandparents do not replace parents.

    • @ruthie7

I'm not sure that it was abandonment, don't forget it was a different era that George VI and his wife were brought up in. Then there is also the point that Charles was in the direct line of succession, would the King have allowed him to leave the country? Possibly not.

It was self absorbed abandonment and no sugar coating it. Charles got the raw end from his parents then sent to that ghastly school to be constantly bullied and humiliated...again ignored. Anne was doted on by Philip but basically ignored by her Mum as well. Andrew was the result of Philip and Elisabeth being estranged as Philip had been sent away on world trip on Britannia and finally came back and was doted on .... much like Harry and let to do as he pleased. Even in that 69 documentary Philip says to Elisabeth 'now can you see who is your favourite? And she denies she has one ' and Philip just laughs. Charles was bullied at school and bullied and ignored at home as well and only became appreciated by his parents after they got older (in their 70s) . He was bloody lucky he had the Queen Mother to dote on him and show his some love and affection as a child

I wonder why you weren’t fond of the then Prince Charles at least after you read the housekeeper‘s book which is describing how difficult Diana was and how much he tried to cope with that.
Even without that he has always been a kind, caring and charming man, sensitive, art loving and passionate to help people and to improve others‘ life (architecture, city planing).
He was even very interested in ecology decades before most other people became aware and he held onto that despite the merciless teasing by the media.
How can anyone not like him for all of that?
PS After hearing just how awful Gordonston was in addition to his childhood neglect by his parents I am actually surprised he turned out as well as he did.

In the future this book will be seen as a very important source for detailing a paradigm shift in the role and presentation of the monarchy and in the upbringing of future monarchs and other members of the royal family - the way Queen Victoria and Prince Albert tried to change the way their children were educated to take their place in society. It is sad that even in 2024 the only “safe” future seems to be through a role in the armed forces. I do hope Prine Louis becomes a world famous jazz drummer😊

Hello Shauna, I do love your enthusiasm and style of critical analysis. Thank you very much for reviewing this book because I had intended on buying it. However.....I am almost the same age as our King and, having grown up as a British National in Africa, we were very aware of the awful weight King Charles had on his shoulders growing up and what he was living through at the time. My Grandfather (a salty exarmy type) often used tut and mutter "that poor little b*^^@r doesn't deserve what he has to put up with just because he was born to be King". Not much love lost for Philip in our household in the 1950's and 60's I have to say and there were more than a few in our town who'd like to have read the senior royal the riot act for his own behaviour! So, I already knew everything that Nigel has raised and I felt his research was really rather shoddy during the writing of this book. What he doesn't seem to go into is the steel King Charles' had to adopt throughout his adolescent years, much of which was masked by his significantly advanced intelligence relative to his younger brother and his far superior awareness of the sensitivities of folk around him. As Prince of Wales, his mother had anticipated Charles would learn a few words in Welsh to appease the Republicans who were rather against him becoming The Prince of Wales in the first instance. Instead, he studied the language in great depth and his acceptance speech at his Installation commanded surprise and respect from the majority of his opponents. There was period of 'grace' granted to him as there was to Prince William. Frankly I don't blame him for his frustration with Andrew.....there were a great many 'old fashioned' journalists and authors who had some very ripe adjectives to offer in respect of the latter!! I'm very grateful for your discussion tonight....it's saved me buying the book and being disappointed. I think Stephen Barry would have been too!

Virginia Robert-Guiffre couldn't get charges to stick because there wasn't criminality with Andrew in my opinion - she was of "legal" age IF/when Andrew etc. Additionally, she has her own questions to answer about recruiting other very young girls and she was able to fly around the world quite easily which does give the lie about being "trafficked"??? They were all revolting and I agree that more people needed to be punished than just Gislaine Maxwell...

I heard that the reason Prince Andrew went to stay with Epstein on that fateful last visit was to ask him for money to bail out Sarah. He said yes but then insisted that in return A stayed a few days for a party, so he did. This really ruined it for him, reputation wise and if true don’t you think Sarah, if she had had any decency, would have said that he had stayed on to help her. That she knew she was a hopeless profligate etc etc and that she was so sorry and would change. No one would have been surprised because people thought she was anyway, but it would have taken a huge amount of heat off A.

I had a distant relative, not nearly distant enough, who was a great admirer of Mountbatten who founded Gordenston and followed what he thought was his example. Little did he know the truth. His eldest son would punch people in the kidneys, hit them in the back of the head with rocks inside of snowballs, and he repeatedly kicked a child with a serious head injury in the head with his booted foot. He tortured cats, told women who were talking to shut up because he wasn’t interested in their opinions, and basically did what he wanted. I would report these behaviours to his father who would always haughtily say “It’ll make a man out of them.” Some of the victims, particularly the girls, may not have wanted to be made a man of and who was he to be in charge of anyone’s manhood anyway! As an adult he did express that he was sorry for his actions but that he got no guidance from his father. He is a better person now. At least I hope so. In this family you shook hands with your sons you didn’t hug them. I never understood this follow the leader, Mountbatten business, when raising a child.

What caught my eye was the way that Prince Andrew leapt out of the car and assiduously helped other members of his family, especially his grandmother. Good manners, yes. Making sure he presented his best side to his mother and grandmother, definitely. A bit of a b*m licker was the impression I got.
And the detail of Andrew’s house being sold to an offshore fund at over the asking price. Hmmm…

I honestly think the Queen Mum was a problem, as much as I loved her and her frilly outfits. (For her, not me!) She was an Edwardian woman that never changed with the times. If Queen Elizabeth II had concerns about Charles being extravagant, it was due to the amount of time he spent with his grandmother. Yes, they put on a show during WWII, and bully for them. They had to be respected leaders. But she was from a different age where royalty would do and have as much as they wanted. Look how the press refused to expose Edward and Wallis until the government had to. Everyone in the US knew what was going on. It was the not so secret secret., but the British press wouldn't publish on it. There was deference back then. Then Charles went into a world of tabloid media at its height and then social media. She did not prepare him well for that, she was used to respect and deference and thought that was what he would have.
