Extended SMC Reset - Unable to Power On Macbook Air

- Can't power on your laptop? Your issue could be related to the System Management Controller. If it is! Then this could be your solution to a non working macbook!
NOTE: This will only work if the original SMC reset did not work. If you have tried both the original SMC reset and this extended method and your computer still has not responded...then your problem lies elsewhere. This is simply just one method in getting your macbook to boot up, assuming the underlying issue is just residual power that needs to be reset or drained out. Other factors could be related to other hardware issues (i.e. ram, hdd, battery, charger, etc.).
Try doing an Extended SMC Reset:
1. Battery must be below 100% (leave the ac adapter unplugged for a couple hours (maybe even half the day) it will self discharge).
2. AC charge adapter must be plugged in
3. Amber steady light must be present
4. Hold down the left Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power key at the same time
5. Let go of all the keys
6. The led light on the charger will change from amber to green
7. QUICKLY PULL OUT and disconnect the charge cable before the green LED change back to amber
8. Your computer will automatically boot up now with the apple logo with the chime (If your computer is working perfectly before, it will not auto boot up FYI)
9. If your computer automatically shuts off again, please repeat these steps followed by a NVRAM / PRAM reset
10. Additionally, make sure your SMC software is up to date: support.apple....
After powering on this laptop, I realized her hard drive was full and unable to allow for updates. When this happens, ram is usually a place holder. And when that gets full, many applications tend to not open correctly. I would advise anyone to clear up and remove unneeded files, applications, transfer large media files to an external hard drive (if available), and to update their operating system to the latest version.
This was able to work on my 2015 MacBook for anyone interested. I tried other resets and none worked but this one did the trick. I had a black screen with no sound or light in the keyboard so thank you for your video!!

Cool it worked, tried it twice and shook the laptop for a second and it worked! I was surprised to hear it fire up. Worked for 2016 MacBook Air 👍

Commenting because this worked !!!!Although FYI it didn’t work right away. I did both versions with the correct response from the charging lights each time. I was disappointed bc I didn’t get immediate results BUT when I went to turn my laptop on a few days later to try again it turned on just by pressing the power button as usual. I was shocked. Thank you for saving me money on a repair !!!!
Wow! Just found yer post/instructions, re: my 2017 MacBook Air: Wouldn’t boot, just got shrill beeps at first, then...nothing, even though the MagSafe showed green. Arrived at your Tube, followed your instructions, waited...waited...nothing. Then, I thought “Oh, what have I got to lose?” Pushed the power button and...Presto! It started.

Wuhaaao it worked it worked.. i literally cried this morning as my mac wasn't turning on. In this pandemic and lockdown period all the service centres are temporarily closed. I had no options left then i saw this video and my problem solved in just 60 seconds. THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH 🙏 ☺ 💓

This works for me (I think so). So I went through a few videos and read the comments. I did a few things but what I did just now worked.
1) Since my battery was full, I did this SMC reset without the battery connected. The same method as in the video but I disconnected the battery from the motherboard first. I use just the power source. & I did this a few times. The light behaved as in this video.
2) It did not work straightaway.
3) I left my macbook without the battery for a few hours. (Because I read a comment here that doing this works).
4) Before I went back home, I reconnected the battery (I was at my office). It was around 5.20 p.m.
5) At around 8.15 p.m., I took out this laptop from my bag to test other methods. Just in case I press the power button.
6) Just as I walk to the power socket, dingggggg, my laptop turned on.
7) Straigtaway wrote this comment.
I'm not sure which of the things I did worked but it did.
Ok update. After it turned on, my Macbook mysteriously shut down on its own. I’ll post updates.
Ok another update. There was a comment that states that the problem of random shut down seems to be due to the SSD being full.
So I removed boot camp and reformatted with fully erasing the disk.
I also changed the thermal paste.
Seems to be working fine now. I’ve tested using Diagnostics (pressing D right after powering up) and it passed the test.

Hey bro I have a problem with my Mac it makes the chime sound and starts. Then the screen is slightly turned on blueish and no apple symbol is shown that gets displayed at the start.
And it remains the same blueish blue screen

I did try Extended reset, my mac was still having loud fan and CPU running at half the speed . I discharged mac to zero, borrowed my friends charger and tried extended smc reset it did work then.Try this if Even the extended reset fails.
Thank you for the tip. It helped me start my late 2008 MacBook pro. Didn't know the SMC reset won't work with a full battery. That was the cause of mine. Used a another half charged battery and it worked. However very often it doesn't start and I have to do the SMC reset. Suspect it could be the be the battery. Will be monitoring the next few days with the one just replaced. If I still have to do SMC reset then something else is a mess. Thank you @eGadgets4me again.

Yep, that’s how to perform an SMC reset, the most basic step when troubleshooting unusual hardware behaviour such as fans running constantly at full speed or startup issues. Strange the Genius Bar couldn’t do that though because it’s really not a complex procedure.

Hi, I'm facing the same issue. It won't turn on when I press the power button, So every morning I have to replace the battery cable to make it work. After connecting the cable it starts and works normally but the next day it won't turn on. I have to replace the battery cable again. Please help me.

I have a similar issue with my 2015 MacBook Air A1466 and have been trying to resolve it for nearly a year. I sent it for repair and was told it was the display was at fault. This was replaced thank God F. O. C. as it only worked for a week or so. I returned it to be told it was the trackpad and this was also replaced. I had to pay for this. Unfortunately this repair didn’t last too long.
I then sent it to a different repair company and they diagnosed a family SMC and EFI chip. These were replaced. This repair lasted about 2 minutes and cost me €350. I returned the laptop twice at this stage. They sent me a link showing the laptop turning on but I just couldn’t get it to boot up.
I thought it was the charger that was at fault as I had no power beyond the charger ie MagSafe cable but had power from the mains supply. I’ve just purchased a new charger from Apple. I do not have any light on the MagSafe connector but I have established that there is power in the laptop.
I just cannot afford to put any more money into it. Is there anything further I can do.
I tried the SMC and the ADVANCED SMC resets.
