  • In 2011 I had a cardiac arrest, I was 31 years old. After this near death experience, I discovered a true passion for photography, and this is my story of how photography changed my life.

For what it's worth, I have always enjoyed your well-produced and well-organized videos, even though the birds seem quite exotic for a guy in the upper Midwest of the US. You have a very nice style and seem like a very nice, genuine guy. I am glad you have found peace and happiness with your wife in spite of life-threatening heart problems. I wish you all the best.

I almost died on my birthday. My heartrate kept crashing, so I was flown by air ambulance to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Overnight my heart kept stopping. I was so scared. The doctors decided to give me a pacemaker, even though I was so young. I feel much better now even though I have other medical issues. Like you, when I am out in the field I forget about all my problems and really live in the moment. I love bird photography and enjoy capturing the beauty of birds. Thanks for sharing your story Duade. It was truly inspirational.

***G'day all, it has been brought to my attention that the overseas version of this book is an inferior product that is of low quality. I had no control over this, and I am very disappointed in the publisher, and I am genuinely so sorry to anyone who purchased the book and received the substandard version. My advice is to not buy the book until this matter is rectified and I get an update from the publisher as to why this occurred. Again, my sincere apologies and thank you so much for the support. I can relate, I was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart) in 2010 at the age of 57. Two open heart surgeries later (2010 & 2012), and after being told I would need a new heart in 2013, I'm still here...with the same heart I was born with. I picked up photography because my doctor told me I needed some exercise, I can't do strenuous stuff like going to the gym, so I started walking, with my camera shooting birds and everything that crawled. Now I have two cameras, a bag full of lenses, a P700 printer, and I am deep into this hobby now. So, welcome to the club! By the way, I have an ICD in my chest as well.

Man, what a heartfelt story, and genuine honesty. It's a difficult story to tell and we all appreciate your bravery in doing so. It's also hard to believe you started so late and you are now as experienced and knowledgable as anyone I know in many aspects of bird photography.
You and Jan Wegener are two of my faves, but the way you talk off the cuff shows your mind functioning at a very high level, even after your attack. I was 3 months in bed, unable to walk from a slipped disc (a chiropractor's favor to me), headed towards an operation, but through exercises have gained most of my mobility back (I've never spoken of this on social media). But birding is my new love and I think many of us experience the euphoria you speak of. Your videos are inspiring, fun to watch, and chock full of information and we all wish you the best health and enough financial success to teach, bird and purchase all the equipment you'll ever want or need 🙂

I've been a photographer since my dad taught me B&W darkroom in 1958 at 8 years old, and got into landscape photography in about 2004 when I switched to DSLR, with a Rebel XT-->XTi->T4i-->70D--.80D, and then got an R7 this summer.
Last summer, when I found myself not wanting to walk around due to knee pain, I had that knee replaced so I could resume my hobby, which I've kicked into higher gear with the R7! That's how much photography means to me, so your story resonates with me.

One of my arborists is a Native American, Apache. He explained his experience to me this way, as best as I can relate it. “I was walking down my life path but didn’t know it wasn’t the direction for me. Then there was the Wham of God, and it led me to a new path, the right one for me.” He is what I’d call a tree whisperer. When he comes he greets and caresses the trees and then he knows what they need. He has revived several for me that have been impacted by the effects of climate change here in southern Arizona. He makes a difference one tree at a time. By the way, his name is Gabriel. Who knows why these things occur, but for those of us who follow you, we are grateful for the path your experience led you to and for all you share with us and teach us. Cheers.

Great video and thanks for sharing. My bird photography started very similar. I was an avid cyclist. Riding 20-40 miles a day… when I was 42 I suffered a heart attack. Sometimes referred to as the widow maker. Thankfully the doctors saved my life. 2 years later emergency blood transfusion and a second stent. This is when I saw a bird in my yard and can’t remember ever seeing one. The 5 minutes it took me to research I was hooked! I’m glad to be alive and I have bird photography to thank for keeping me from being overwhelmed by the fear of almost dying again. Love your videos and look forward to watching them. Morning Duade, I hope you're well. Thank you for sharing your story, it takes courage to open up like that. I was a Police Officer with Victoria Police and was recently ill health retired in September last year after a 20 years in 'the job'. You can probably guess why. The last three years have been a challenge not just for me but for my family and especially my wife. I have found getting out into nature to be incredibly therapeutic. Sometimes I just sit there absorbing nature's energy while photography gets set on the back burner for a while. I always leave the bush feeling calmer but energised at the same time. Anyway Duade, thanks again. All the best, Brian.

Inspirational .... I retired from the Metropolitan Police (London) after 31 and a half years in April 2021. Although I had being doing landscape photography for a number of years I decided to try my hand at wildlife and bird photography and I am loving it. Duade Paton thanks for the lessons! I am 49 years old and have been suffering from hypertension for 30 years. For some time now, panic attacks have begun with a rise in pressure of 220/120 and above. Photography helps me relax, but sometimes in the field there are attacks and I feel very unhappy and overwhelmed. Unfortunately, now I can not do what I love, there is a war going on in my country. A very interesting and inspirational story. Much respect to you for not retreating from life after your awful medical ordeal but instead creating a new life. You are certainly relaxed and natural in front of the camera. As a personal aside, I was interested when you showed the old Canon 40D. That model was my first DSLR. A great little camera. 10 megapixels and 9 autofocus points, if I remember correctly. Technology has come a long way since then.

Superb story thanks for sharing love your videos here in the UK I’m also a 400 f5.6 user and love it along with 150-600 sigma c. Just getting to grips with an R6, your videos are educational and very useful to improve my wildlife photography. Doing photography for fun is important as soon as it becomes a necessity the fun drops off. I was a part time wedding photographer for 25 yrs and eventually it ruined my enjoyment. After many yrs doing weddings and motorsport photography wildlife photography helps me slow down and relax. Best wishes for the future and stay well.

I had read your story online, but hearing about it first hand is another thing. It allows me to connect to you at a different level. My life changed in 1994, 6 months after I married my current wife. I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and under went surgery and 4 months of chemotherapy treatment. Since then I have had two other cancer surgeries and several outpatient procedures to treat bladder cancer along with two lower back surgeries to correct ruptured disc. I finally was able to retire in May of 2020 just in time for the Covid lockdowns. I'm hopeful that this year will be a turning point, but with the war in Europe and ridiculous prices here in the states that's kind of doubtful now. Keep up the great videos.

Thank you for sharing your story. I have found that bird photography has become instrumental in helping my mental health. I have a history in photography, but hardly touched a camera for about 10 years. When lockdowns started I spent time walking round my local cemetery, and I too took my 40D and a very old Sigma 70-200. I had never really considered photographing birds before, and still sometimes have to check my bird book to find out what I have photographed.
However I have found that the negative thoughts that I have disappear when I am out in the field, sometimes I get frustrated that I don't get the photos that I want but can appreciate the beauty of nature, and bird song can always raise my spirit. I can't say I have an affinity for lying in the mud but maybe that will come 😊

I started bird photography during Covid as I started walking the beach instead of the foothills and mountains as I could distance from other people on the beach. Recently I was photographing Elephant Seals at the beach and noticed California Condors flying overhead which I started photographing the birds.

Thanks for the support, great to hear you found something you love out of a bad situation. Nature teaches us a lot of lessons and if we can capture its beauty and share that then we can hopefully help a little bit. Cheers, Duade

Sir: I don’t know if you ever expected to hear that someone else (i.e. me) has undergone a very similar sequence, but I want to tell you that watching your video here is incredibly reassuring. At the end of 2019, I, too, had an SCA while warming up on the tennis court. A great place, without joking too much, to have a cardiac arrest: there was a defibrillator, and two courts down was a PA who was trained in CPR, and not too far away was an ER and cardiology-trained nurse who applied the defibrillator. The club is just a few minutes away from a university hospital with a great cardiology team, so similarly, I was in a coma for awhile on life support, but awoke with no brain damage. I’m not as advanced as you, but I understand what changed in the way you saw nature. A year after my cardiac arrest, I went on a photo tour in Romania (Transylvania) and Bulgaria. That gave me the confidence to think I could actually become a photographer (I’m retired), and I’m signed up to go on a workshop in Iceland in November. There is something about realizing that it is only the gods that have let us survive - only 5% of those experiencing an SCA outside of a hospital survive. I am working on becoming a landscape photographer, and I can only hope that I will have enough time to become (almost?) as good as you. Thank you for your video and your story.

Hi Duade, really inspirational video. And wonderful to hear how your hardships and journey brought you to a place and pastime that you love. I was so sorry to hear about Matt, he and I shared some emails a few years ago. I really enjoyed and appreciated his photography and website and his advice. Congratulations on the book and I'm glad you managed to put that together.
    All the best!

Wow, subscribed immediately. I am a medic/firefighter and started photography for the exact opposite reason. I needed an outlet to deal with the amount of death and sickness I am surrounded by daily. Having your morality shoved in your face constantly has a way of nagging at you at night. Thanks for sharing your story. I know I do not need to tell you how incredibly blessed you are to not only be alive but as vibrant as you are. Found your channel as I just switched to Canon and have found the r6 markii to be fussy but will now stay to follow your journey. I couldn't care less about birds but find it inspiring all the same. Peace and blessings Duade.

Thanks for the comment and sharing your story, first responders take on a lot of trauma that is extremely difficult to deal with over a long period of time. It is very hard to understand if you have not experienced it first hand. Photography certainly was an escape for me and I am glad to hear it is offering you the same healing power. If you do happen to start photographing wildlife it does become very addicting so be careful with that ;-) Thanks for what you do, we are all safer for it. Cheers, Duade

Thank you so much for sharing an emotional, inspirational life story and wonderful your bird photography journey. You are doing great jobs. Many people as me can receive a lots knowledge of photography from your TH-cam. I saw first your bird photography videos through Jan Wegener’s TH-cam. You both are great motivators and inspirers for my photographing. 🙏

Having several cardiac arrests and still standing. A combination of luck and science. That your wife was home. I’m a retired family dr. During the last European championships in football a Danish player had an arrest. That’s the most stressful moment I have had in front of the tv. Started screaming. It turned out in the right way. I like the tempo in your videos. Keep it up.

Yours is a very inspiring story, Duade. Your wife literally saved your life! I've long believed that everyone should get CPR training. Great to see how you've progressed as a photographer. Give yourself credit for having a natural eye for light and composition as well as a love and affinity for your subjects. I look forward to more content. My biggest problem with lying down to shoot birds on the water or the ground is getting back up! 😂

I have always enjoyed your videos. You are a very real human being. Your life story has really touched me. 2 years ago I followed my grandkids to Loveland Colorado near Rocky Mountain National Park. I have always had a camera but was far from being adept at photography. When I moved to Colorado, photography was going to be my next ADVENTURE, and my serious learning process began. I have learned very much from your videos and in quite grateful. I am 74 and retired. I look forward to YOUR next Adventures!

Hi Daude! been watching your channel for a bit now, and I enjoy a lot of the videos you make. I started watching your videos as I have gotten interested in photographing birds in my backyard during the NSW lockdowns (my main field of photography is aviation) and I'd like to thank you on behalf of everyone for all the tips you've given us to improve our bird photography. Recently I got the chance to visit a local shorebird reserve for a school project on waterbirds. I took the opportunity to take my 7D and 70-300mm lens out and get some very good shots of a singular Bar-tailed Godwit. I also spotted a Pied Oystercatcher, but it was very shy and wouldn't let me get close, even though I was lying flat down on the sand, slowly crawling my way towards it. I hope you continue to make many more videos and wish you the very best :)

It is my pleasure, great to hear you visited some shorebird, I love them and the NSW coast has many good spots. Good luck with the photography. Cheers, Duade
