They have an urge to kill usually based in sexual and/or psychological urges. This guy had a very clear motive, he killed for gain and for convenience (to avoid getting caught for his stealing). It was a deliberate, thought through decision on his part, not coz he had any urge to kill, but for expedience. Hence, while having murdered several ppl he does not meet the definition of a serial killer.

If the producers insist on just having subtitles, then put up a black box for the white type of the subtitles, make the size of the type (pitch) big, and give plenty of time to read such AND look at the pictures. (Really, it's a lot easier and better if you just get a native English speaker to translate what the French speakers are saying.)
