Would you like to see a how to make a version 2.0 to this?
I’m thinking about making one maybe half the size, made with varying materials rather than just willow.
Would that be something you’d like to see?

I was searching for basket weaving and came across this video, I love the organic form of this basket!

      Thank you so much!!
I’m still a complete beginner at basket weaving but I’ve fallen in love with this style, it’s really forgiving and allows you to create something with a beautifully natural form like you said!
In my new baskets I’m trying to use a similar weave but incorporate varying materials, for example regular wild willow with something like twisted willow or hazel.
What kind of basket weaving are you interested in?

@@agreatalternative I'm not sure yet, I started my youtube search with pine needle basket and before you know it you go down the rabbit hole of basket weaving 😁 But I really like this style of weaving and the use of different kind of materials. I have never woven something myself but now I am very interested in trying :) I love how it looks so organic and beautiful and is funtional as well.

      @@justj3259 Haha that’s exactly how I started!!!
I found what helped me was just going and testing natural materials while out on a walk, then coming back to search for TH-cam videos on that particular fibre.
That’s how I learnt a lot about spruce root (pine would work the same I think), an amazing material to work with!
Good luck with your basket weaving journey!!
If you’re interested I share more images of ongoing weaving projects on our Instagram page 👍

I love those weaving basket tutorials! I need to make one of course! There’s all that willow out back you have shown me!

Yeah you could easily make a whole bunch of stuff like this, it’s really easy too!
Remember to wait for November - March to harvest as I think it can damage the plant to harvest during the spring/ summer 👍
Then you can be like me and give everyone woven presents 🤣

I love this basket! The organic shape makes it a work of art! I've been making rather dodgy baskets for the last few years out of olive tree suckers I pruned in Greece but this is a whole other level! Nice to see it in use, perfect for the purpose.

    • @agreatalternative
      @agreatalternative  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you, I was really pleased with how this shape just organically formed itself as I wove everything together, proved to me that however messy it starts off it’ll come together!
I’d love to see your baskets, especially as that’s not a fibre I’ve heard of using before!

Diolch Jason! I've been waiting for this video. Shame it's the wrong time to harvest willow yet. Might have a go with some bramble? Look forward to hopefully seeing you at Glasbren next week!🎬📽️😁

      Diolch 😊
Hopefully it has helped, I bumped it up the list of releases because of your comments 😁
Yea bramble could work, or maybe pine tree roots (from a fallen tree)?
Otherwise I’ve been using the summertime to find all of the spots where I can harvest wild willow in the winter so i know where I can get a lot in one go!
      See you there 👍

      Добрый день.
Очень интересно, я только смотрю, но сама еще не сплела ни одной вещи.
Иву начала разводить, 3 сорта посадила
.Good afternoon. Very interesting, I’m just looking, but I haven’t woven a single thing myself yet. I started breeding willow and planted 3 varieties.

Great start and I hope you enjoy playing with new ideas!
This was a great first random weave basket for me as there is no set template and you can’t really make mistakes!
Отличное начало, надеюсь, вам понравится экспериментировать с новыми идеями!
Для меня это была отличная первая корзина для случайного плетения, поскольку здесь нет установленного шаблона, и вы не можете допускать ошибок!

if you use green material it will loosen dry the material then soak it for 1 day per foot

Do you know how long wild willow would need to dry for? (for example in an outdoor ventilated shed)

This video is fantastic! Would you be able to elaborate on what youre doing to keep the willow from snapping? I see youre doing some sort of twising movement, but every time i try to replicate it, i snap my branches!

    • @agreatalternative
      @agreatalternative  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@rottenroadkill3311 Great question!
      In short in depends….😁
The methods I use to prevent cracking are
      - Like you said a twisting motion
      - Using a thumb to bend small sections
      - Pulling back and forth over a knee
      - Try to put as small a bend in the willow rod when weaving. Often this means your other hand is supporting while the main one is weaving. There are different techniques for this but it depends on what you are weaving.
Wild willow tends to be more prone to snapping though, plus it depends on whether it’s fresh/ dry or dry and then re-soaked.
Another method could be to re-soak it for longer?
Or use material that is a thinner than you currently are using if possible?
I’ve not tried it that much but you could also try to split the willow in half, which would make it thinner and more flexible.
(I show roughly how to do this in the spruce root harvesting video)
      Hope that helps!!

I love this beautiful natural basket! Having just tried weaving a tiny random weave yesterday for the first time, from fine weeping willow branches I found on the roadside with some ivy I pulled up, I can't wait to gather larger willow and start a basket like yours. Thank you for sharing this. I look forward to watching more videos of weaving baskets and the market garden too. Such a beautiful garden!! All of it is wonderfully uplifting to see and inspiring. I am in awe of your living space too. Would be so glad to read or hear more about how you have brought the garden and the caravan together to live life alternatively. Thankyou.....

@@audreyreiss4121 Thank you so much for all the beautiful comments Audrey 😊🫂
Lots to talk about so I’m not sure where to start 😂
Firstly I’d love to see your random weave baskets, if you want to please share some images with me on insta!
It’s a style I love as it’s really freeing and forgiving for a lot of materials.
One thing I found out after doing this video was that some types of ivy can be harmful to some people later skin so I probably shouldn’t have used it as a handle!
If you’re interested in finding more about the market garden, go check out Glasbren as it’s their farm and they have now moved to a new site that MUCH bigger so they are a really inspiring example of what community farming can be.
As for me and Alicia things haven’t moved much further in regards to our homestead, which is why we’re focusing more on natural crafts, trying to focus on things we can control for now!
Is there any specific weaving project you’d be interested in me trying?
