Why do you use a pick and then fingers and then a pick again?and isn't playing with your fingers the "bass" thing? is there any actual difference? besides how you look when playing?
Definetly! Pick and fingers give you two different sounds, and by the tone of the bass in the actual songs of the album, I belive Tyler's using pick most of the time, although he does not use it in live shows.

Mostly when people use picks while playing bass is to get more of an agressive sound, more in your face, mostly punk/rock/metal bassists use picks
Pick gives each strum a much sharper, quick and slightly more aggressive sound, whereas fingers give it a smoother gentler sound
