English is not a problem whatsoever with Scandinavians and Finns speaking and singing it but hearing ABBA singing in their native Swedish brings a level of depth, richness and grandeur that is truly astonishing to behold. I am guessing they performed this version whenever they did shows in Sweden. They are truly the unsurpassed ambassadors of Swedish culture.
I do not mean to criticize Abba at all. I just wonder what you mean by "ambassadors of Swedish culture." What are examples of Swedish culture that they bring to other countries?
@@4timesnow318 Read and research the definition of "culture" before giving this kind of comment. For your reference, ABBA is deserved to the culture of "Swedish pop music". If you don't meet your own demand, you have to! =)))

In my opinion, Waterloo is equally nice in English. Remember, the won the Eurovision Song contest in 1974 against the competition of about 40 countries...
This is the original version that Benny and Bjorn wrote and submitted to the Melodifestivalen which is the annual competition that specifically selects songs for the Eurovision Song Contest. ABBA won the 1973 Melodifestivalen and secured the rights to represent Sweden at 1974 Eurovision which they also ended up winning and, well, the rest is history being made.
And this is why I say ABBA is the greatest pop group of all time. Not only can have they sold billions of records, they can sing in many different languages, including French, English and Spanish and sound fluent. Not only that, but even their Spanish albums sold millions. Give me another pop group that's ever done that in history. I'll wait.
@@georgekuenzli8752 I actually didn't like Waterloo and although it deserved to win the 1974 Eurovision being way ahead of its time, the rest of their material is other wordly and my preference (imho). Chiquitita has one of the most amazing switches that still blows me away to this day....
Swedish version is extra cute and charming! Love it! Someone was a little off. And these girls have got the most amazing voices in the music back then. It's live! WOO
My Grandma would listen to ABBA when I was a little girl, and she's sing along in Swedish. Glad I was able to spend time with her before she passed. Christmas hasn't been the same since she left. Miss you mormor, thinking of you lots today, you always made Jasmine and I Christmas Eve very special.
This is a spectacular song. Abba's group will never be forgotten for this breathtaking soundtrack. Even Though it got sung 40 years ago, this song likes even to people from my generation!! (:
Abba with Native Mode turned On. Sounds quite pure, of course. Fantastic song even in Swedish and fabulous clothes! Very nice - this is where they qualified to be Sweden's entry for ESC in 1974!
So sweet hearing them sing "Jo Jo". Euphoric! And then I think of Loreen winning for Sweden in 2012. I think both songs were just as good, in different ways. But Euphoria was one song. ABBA made so many and all songs were really good!
No. I'm pretty sure they meant "jo". It translates as "yes," but there is some subtlety. When I first heard this, I immediately sat up, prepared for something. It came with yhe next line: "Men men": "But but." As I hear it, "Well of course Napoleon surrendered, but what's more important *I* am surrendering." Nice little twist and really hard to do om Emglish!
the ONLY two bands I admire the most, Led Zeppelin and ABBA. Not long lived as a band (Zep 1968-1980, ABBA 1972-1981) but their heavenly songs will be for eternity... I was even born after ABBA broke up.
Never forget they won and i stil love there music❤️

“I have met my destiny in quite a similar way” is rather clumsy in English and this is much better, starting with “Jo jo”. Honestly, they would also have won the ESC singing in this version - and at the time many entries were in native languages
I listen to many songs by many Swedish artists like ABBA, Roxette, Robyn, Tove Lo, Nina Kinert, INVSN, but this is the fist time I listened to a song in Swedish.

The Swedish version is as great as the English version! Thank you for the music Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Frida.
I wouldn't say it works quite as well. Probably because they've tried to keep the meaning of the lyrics over the rhyming of the lyrics.
