9/11 Stories: Former FDNY Tim Brown

  • Tim Brown is a 20 year, highly decorated FDNY’er. On September 11th, he came close to death not once, not twice, but several times. Just one different turn or staying a moment longer in a spot would surely have left him among the 343 New York City firefighters to die that day. More than a few were his close friends, whom he saw for the last time that day. Tim says he know why he was spared: to tell their stories, to be the voice that his friends don’t have. He says, “The greatest love is giving your life for someone you didn’t know”.
On September 11th, Tim was a supervisor for Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s Office Of Emergency Management. The department was comprised of top NYC firefighters and police officers, along with representatives from The NYC Health Department and the NYC Department of Environmental office. Just 5 years old, the department was tasked with organizing an efficient city response to emergencies. Never could anyone in the department ever predict their impeccable training would be a lifesaver, not once, but twice in a single day in a twin attack.
Just before 9 A.M., Tim Brown was going through his early morning routine at 7 World Trade Center, reading all the New York City newspapers as he ate his cheerios in the cafeteria. Suddenly, the power went out. After 5 seconds, it returned. Brown knew the emergency generator kicked in. Across the room, those sitting by the window saw something hit #1 World Trade Center, the North Tower. Tim Brown’s training kicked in. His 9/11 story is unimaginable, at one point holding on to a column, surviving the dust cloud of the collapsed South Tower that was so strong, it lifted his legs into the air.

I was on 74th floor tower 2 when the second plane hit. Finally got out very late. This is an incredible account, so real and close to my experience. I think I saw both Chief Burns at the bottom of B in tower 2. Bigger than life! And possibly Calvin in the street level lobby. Talked with Fire Marshall Ronald Bucca on 60. Yes Tim, each responder KNEW it. It was in there in there eyes and voice. So appreciate this account. You were one of the very best that day and a very good person. Thank you!!!

You should be interviewed. It’s all history that must be recorded- every single experience. I was a volunteer nurse the next day at the site- nobody to save. That was tragic for me too.

Oh my word, this has been the most gut wrenching personal story I believe I've ever heard. You could see in his eyes, and his face, when he would look to the right, as he remembered, he saw everything in technicolor, replayed like a movie of 9/11. God Bless you Sir. I was at work (dialysis), just finished getting 1st shift on. Turned on the tv for our patients, and withnessed the first plane. I woke up two gentlemen patients to watch. I honestly thought "drunk pilot." Then witnessed all the rest. I still 22 years later remember vividly all of it. I read and watch EVERYTHING! My heart breaks to know what all those people went through. Even 22 years later. Tim Brown, Pasqual and Welles are the stories that have stayed in my memories. Bless you all!

Or can not believe that fire 🔥 that was up to 2000 degrees could not bring down the towers . That is just ridiculous and for those that call it that you bring more grief to all those who were there that day the ones that made out alive and those who perished , your calling them Liars that truely is a shame on You !!! I met Ray Downie at the Oklahoma City bombing just outside the building. The true concern and comfort he gave to others standing there while you could clearly see the pain in his own face was something I never forgot. For him to later lose his life on 9/11 was something unthinkable at the time. RIP sir, you are truly not forgotten. He was an extraordinary human being.

i grew up in NY. i was in NY on Sept. 11th. it's taken 22 years for me to finally be able to watch these stories without it causing me extreme anxiety and stress. now i'm binge watching as many as i can find to finally build the complete story from as many points of view as possible. i'm creating layers like an onion of all the different things that were going on simultaneously that day. from the air traffic controllers, the police and fire, the people running from the scene or trapped in the rubble. but in the picture in my head of all the horrific, brave, heroic, tragic things that happened that day...the one that i now will never forget, is the image of two NYC firefighters kissing on the lips at the base of tower one as the chaos was happening. 😘😚🧑‍🚒🧑‍🚒 epic

Thank you Tim for telling your story. It was difficult to listen to it, I can’t even imagine what it was like for you being there experiencing it! You spoke with such high regard of your fallen comrades. They were so very brave and dedicated. I remember 9/11 very well. I don’t have any connection to NYC, so I don’t know where places were located in or near the WTC. You told your story very well, so I could get some sense of place and space. I learn something new from every story I listen to. All the details from many stories, once they are combined, provide a much clearer picture of what happened, how it happened, when it happened. The new detail I took away from your story is the strength of the wind. Most people mention the horrible noise they heard when the buildings collapsed. I’ve not heard the wind described the way you did.

I have some "NEW" HEROES! 🇺🇸 in my heart of souls and one is Capt. Tim Brown & buy all means and respectfully his fireman friends! The word thank you isnt enough in a thousand life voices and im saddened theres not more "THANKS!" comments here, to express my gratitude! I wish I could be Tims friends and to just spend a day talking sports or hanging out in New York not to necessarily talk about 911, but just be around a real superhuman, Super man! Thank you
Capt. Tim! Lov 💘 Kenny! Ann arbor , Michigan. Your the best!! 🤗🤙💌🎶🎼🎸🇺🇸🗽

I’m sorry, I’m so sorry what you went through and what you’re still going through and you will for your entire life with yourself and your family and those around you and those comrades that are dealing or have dealt with the same way of life or death. It makes me sick. I have a brother-in-law who is a real hammerhead from New Jersey fire department in North Field and he spent a lot of time up there but he doesn’t ever want to share anything about it.

I'll never stop listening to this stuff and watching. Not out of morbid curiousity or anything. Far from it... The sheer suffering of those poor people must never ever be forgotten. Terrorists must always be deleted on sight. This will sadly happen again and next time a terrorist nuke. That WILL happen. No mercy for terrorists.

We Firefighter take that oath seriously . 35yrs here .but these men are the best in the world .sadly we lost brothers that day . But that's why fighting fires is one of the world's most dangerous jobs .as a vol .Fireman yrs if one says we aren't scared .that's bullshit . But we are the bravest in the world next to the service people

Listening to this brought it ll to me with such clarity. More so than watching the videos. The amazing men and women who braved the stairs, who went u those stairs knowing they most likely wouldn’t return down them. What amazing people, but also such characters tpo. What a terrible loss to ll their loved ones and to city they loved enough to do what they did.

Thank you for reliving the details which you do sooo very bravely, such enormous responsibility equally as honorable as your brothers - you gave each of their children and partners dignity knowing what their last moment were, that they were focused and calm, they were going to fight for others till the end. They trusted you with their very legacy. If it’s anything, what I took away from your miraculous survival was almost a pre destiny with each one of your brothers, unspoken but knowing, they knew you’d keep remember every detail, you were able to give them peace as they left the world. Good works of this magnitude should to be retold by there equal. You.

Tim, Thank you for your amazing story of the events that you witnessed on the day many of us refer to as the worst day of our lives! I believe,as you said, God chose you to be the FDNY’s version of a later days Marcus Luttrell’s Lone Survivor story! What you have recorded will be looked at for centuries, especially by those of us in the Fire Service and understand what a commitment to serve Is, and the relationships we make, is truly special. Be well my Brother, and thanks for keeping our story alive, FDNY retired.

I am truly humbled and amazed by your story Sir. I thought I knew.....I really thought I had a grasp of what occurred that fateful day.....I DIDNT HAVE A CLUE. SO MANY HEROS SO MANY PEOPLE of all colors, creeds, religions,. Who gave their selves, their LIVES, not only that....the selfless acts that HEROES DO. You did these things knowing what it would cost ...knowing it...YOU DID IT ANYWAY!! I could never ever repay such a debt. I could never come close!!! I am overcome. I am just one person ..but I want you to know that your story has changed me. If you can be this person...all the others like you.....then I can be!! Thank you for what you did that day. I could never know what it has done to you ...please just know that you make me proud to be an American. I'm honored that I got to hear your story . You and so many like you that day....I am in awe .
