I realized while I was editing that I was a little hard on Hui Seong in this episode. In my defense, Ae Shin is my favorite character, and I wasn't so sure about his intentions towards her, but he started to win me over a bit in the next episode. So, we’ll see where this goes. Also my reaction to episode 6 is already up on Patreon.
This drama has numerous subtexts. chosun, a small country that became a victim of imperialism, was pushed into modernization without achieving it on its own. Its class system collapsed overnight, but chosun still retains social classes. Aesin refers to chosun itself. The three men connected her each symbolize something distinct. Eugene, having left his social status behind, returned to chosun as a soldier of a powerful country. At first, he couldn't empathize much with his crumbling homeland. To him, it was just the country that abandoned him and killed his parents. Dongmae is also a member of the lowest social class, abandoned by his homeland like Eugene. However, he returns to Chosun as a member of the ruthless Japanese Yakuzas, who seek to invade and dominate Chosun cruelly. He is a complex character with conflicting feelings of both affection and resentment towards Aesin, who once saved his life. In the beginning, he appears to be driven solely by money. To him, money is the means to rule over the homeland he wants to avenge. Heesung is well aware that his family's prosperity came through deceitful means. However, unable to betray his family, he fled to Japan, the enemy country, to pursue his studies. As a result, he symbolizes the powerless Korean intellectuals who lack the will to actively shape their own lives, feeling unworthy of determining his destiny. He carries the burden of guilt for the misfortunes brought upon others by his family but shows a detached attitude, bearing the weight of responsibility alone. As a historical drama, it may be difficult to fully understand the drama if one is not familiar with the situation during the chosun period. I hope this brief character background will be helpful in understanding the upcoming story.
In this era, the status was very strict. Marriage was allowed only between people of the same status. Dong-mae's status is the lowest and he couldnt even look at Ae-shin's status. The reason why Dong-mae grabbed the end of Ae-shin's clothes was because he wanted to keep Ae-shin by him side but couldnt, so he just grabbed the end of the Ae-shin's clothes, the furthest part of her body.
Powerful writing, acting + amazing cinematography just blew my mind with every single episode. What words cannot express in these episodes the cinematography does. The powerful feelings elicited just by watching Dong Mae's fingers being brushed by Ae Shin skirt spoke volumes without a single word being uttered. Every single episode gives you so many feels!!!
I loved when you said of Eugene when he confronted his parent's killers, "He didn't just come back. He came back Powerful". That's exactly right! One can only imagine how many times in his life Eugene dreamed of that moment.
I sometimes can't believe that the content of this drama was before the full-fledged colonial rule began. In fact, it is heartbreaking that during the colonial period, it was more brutal than it seemed in this drama. I enjoyed watching the video today, too! I'm so happy to see you on TH-cam 💗
In addition, it can be expected that Dongmae is feeling very complicated emotions in the last scene. When Ae-shin's skirt brushed against his fingertips, he would have remembered the time when he wiped the blood around his mouth with Ae-shin's skirt in the kiln as a child, or wanted to hold on to the end of her skirt. But there's nothing more he can do than that..
I like when you said, "whenever I see that guy, I wish I hadn't" LOL!! That's a perfect description of such a loathsome character! I cringe whenever he comes on the screen. And that tableau at the end with Ae Shin and Dong Mae! Wow! So visually beautiful, so much unexplained meaning, and so charged with intrigue. Your comments as a studied theater expert are appreciated!
I’ve just been made aware that the subtitles in this video are out of sync. Although, I do type the subtitles out in English so that TH-cam can more accurately translate them into other languages, TH-cam is the one that syncs them to the video. I did upload the subtitles again so that TH-cam regenerate the timings, but it looks like that's all I can do for now. If it continues to be a problem please let me know. I’ll see if there’s some possible solution. Thanks everyone, and I apologize for the inconvenience. ❤
The writer of this show compared the fate of the Chosen Dynasty (Former name of the Republic Of Korea) with the situations of some characters, like this scene. Ae-soon is just losing money on gambling with others. Likewise, the Chosen dynasty kept losing in foreign affairs with other countries. If you reflect on the show, you'll find other metaphors of the Chosen dynasty's history.
she is an actress, that is why she focuses on that part but I'm sure she is breathtaken by the direction and direction of art of this drama. That ending scene is just one of the most beautiful things my eyes ever witnessed.
The truth in the history, America wasn't our side at that time...😢 Josun was weak at that time. And, Josun had influenced by Qing for a long time. It was something like a global partnership. And, ppl begin to have a doubt abt a status system. The royal family ruined the country with their huge greed such as rebuilding of the palace, and buying a lot of ruxury items and maintaining their powers. In the end, the old military forces begin the armed uprising. The queen request the cleaning of the mobs to Qing. After then, military forces of Japan empire entered to Josun. They insisted that the military forces of Qing entered to Josun. So, we also need to enter to Josun by the treaty with Qing. Qing is defeated by Japan empire in war. After then, Josun dynasty called Russia empire to Josun to check and balance with the forces of Japan empire. Then, British empire forces forcefully conquered an island in southen region of Josun to check the Russian empire forces. America also entered to Josun. So, the Josun dynasty made a treaty with America. One of the main item was that If the other countries have an conflict with Josun, America will intermediate between them for Josun. And, they got the rights for constructing of railroad, for mining gold in Josun, logging in forest, free trading. But, when Japan empire started to move for conquering Josun, America didn't act for mediation. Bcs, they had the Katsura-Taft Agreement between Japan empire and America. It means that America occupy Philippine. And, Japan empire occupy Josun. And, they agreed about it in secret. Unfortunately, America wasn't our side at that time...😢😢😢
This might be off topic (sorry 😅) but with the way you're giving comments in this drama makes me want to hear about your thoughts for the drama, Revenant, which stars Taeri also 😅
I always wait for Mr. Sunshine's reaction. And I'm happy. Your reaction is kind, thoughtful, and funny. Thank you for the Korean sub-titles. But what you're saying and the sub-titles are seriously out of sync. I want the sink of the subtitles to be perfect. I'll wait for your next reaction. I like you and thank you.
Oh, really? Thanks for letting me know. I do write the subtitles in English, but TH-cam is the one that syncs them. Is it just this video that is out of sync or have others been this way as well? I’ll see if there’s a way for me to fix them.
@@KahlaMonique Technically, it's not going to be easy. Now is deep night in Korea. I'm glad I got your reply before I go to sleep. TH-cam, also watch your patreon. Good night
Yeah, I feel like this is true for most Kdramas that feature foreign actors at some point. This actually is some of the better acting that I’ve seen, but it’s still not very good. I’m so used to it now, I just ignore it now and focus on the Korean actors 😂. I’m sure they must have a very small pool of foreign actors to choose from, but I wish that pool was better.

점점 희성의 팬이될겁니다 장담해요ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Can't wait for you to watch Huiseong's character development ❤
Another thing I'm in love with is the soundtrack 🥰

미스터션샤인 보는 유튜버분들 많이 없어서 슬펐는데ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ감사합니다ㅠㅠ♥︎
You are right, Gu Dong Mae, Aeshin, Eugene Choi won Best actor awards for their performance in Mr Sunshine

This is so painful for me to watch as this situation is happening again in Korea's history. This is probably the most romantic story ever.

The American actors use really bad dialog or are bad actors.
