The first thing after becoming Muslim is to Sacrifice your desire. Never follow your desire and a Muslim can never have a desire that goes against the command of Allah. That is what Muslim means, sacrificing your will to Allah.
Desire is natural part of being human. I think you need to read the Quran in translation again. It doesn't ask to sacrifice, it says worship. And worship can be Dua. And about being reasonable and not excess. Life is a gift as well as a test.
