Would be a good case study as to how we went from Game 4 of the Pens-Blackhawks in 1992 being the first ever NHL game to be played in June, and now we're playing a game on June 25

I was (like Pat) 1 year old during the first cup runs - but I remember learning to skate at 3 years old & loving hockey & watching Mario’s PENS dominate the game (regular season atleast) - but I’m so grateful to have memories of watching Sidney Patrick Crosby (on the Mount Rushmore & still playing …) & Evgeni Malkin & others just … consistently play amazing hockey from me being in high school to gray hair status - & I can’t wait to watch them for another year - that last run they went on (last 14 games of season)
that’s what they are capable of … ❤️

The Guentzel for Bunting trade was very similar to the Huberdeau for Tkachuk trade, in the play styles. Hunerdeau and Jake are more offensive guys not extremely gritty, whereas Tkachuk and Bunting are smash mouth get in the dirty areas and grind it out but also have the offensive touch too. Those are the types of players that win you games in my eyes. Florida got a cup out of it, almost back to back. They went from an offensive minded team, winning president trophy and no cup final, to defensive minded and making back to back cup finals, winning one of them, against one of the most potent offensive teams in the league if not the most potent. Not a bad team structure to try to mirror….

Idk … ‘92 had 8 less teams in the league than ‘16/‘17 …
there weren’t as many top notch players & goaltenders on average weren’t as good … that’s why I always give the latter CUP runs the A-OK 👌 over the former because … back then with 22 teams - yinz had 2 teams with a below average.500 winning percentage (in Eastern Conference alone) that made the playoffs - it’s actually pretty wild - the way the playoff system was set up between the 2 divisions in ‘91-‘92 - the SABRES (74pts) & the WHALERS (65pts) made it over the ISLES (79pts) & the FLYERS (75pts)
& the latter teams had 4 lines that just dominated … HBK (3rd line) was the best in all of the playoffs
& watch a video on TH-cam of all the PENS goals in the ‘16 playoffs … Matt Cullen appears quite a bit 😂

Imagine comparing Jarry to Ullmark and Markström. Nobody wants his contract right now.

  • @maczed31
    @maczed31 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Dubas' MO:
Too much money and term on most contracts.
Take flyers on many players to fill bottom 6, fringe players in hopes of hitting a homer ( and looking like a genius) instead of getting quality players.
    Poor assessing of D
Fill the draft and prospect pool for trades in the future
Poor trades (with exception of O'Reilly in Toronto) all other trades was in the L column for him.
He's done the same in Pittsburgh as he did in Toronto. In Toronto he had immense talent, and failed to build a winner. Not to say he will fail again, but I don't trust his ability to make the decisions to win. Hextall never won, Dubas has never won, and both before coming here made decisions that were more L's than W's.
Guentzel trade I think will go down as a bad trade.
I hope the last few years of Sid's career isn't wasted because I don't see Pittsburgh winning without Sid for some time

For me, the solution to the power play issues all go back to an interview with Jeff Petry, when Letang was recovering from his most recent stroke. Petry, during an interview, was asked about moving up to the first power play, because of Letang being out. Petry, basically, said that the in-game powerplay was nothing like they practiced, because "the guys do their thing" and weren't paying attention to the coach.

    Nice episode, Pat 🙌
Josh and I are similar in age, so I’m not surprised he answered ‘92. You really had to be there to understand how dominant Lemieux was in his prime with that largely HoF supporting cast.
The Pens of that era could’ve been a long-running dynasty (think ‘80s Oilers) if Howard Baldwin had any money (and not loans up the wazoo).

But but Wonderboy Dubas has such a track record of pure genius. He unloaded alot of Hextall screw ups. Then bid against himself with Graves & Jarry!

Yeah Dubas did a good job ridding the team of Hextall's mistakes, but then he made some mistakes of his own, there's no denying that. He really can't afford to miss this summer, it's kind of make or break.

@@cmypath78 I'm with you my friend...I'm in Toronto...saw him work with the team in Toronto...he's followed the same MO in Pittsburgh....just fyi in Toronto he built the farm system and got picks to make poor decisions with them...and his signings....he has consistently given more money and term than expected....not been able to make a good bottom 6, and his decisions on D and in net have never worked out...not to say it won't....but I'm with you...I didn't buy the hype and still don't.....I don't trust him with trying to salvage Sid's last few years...in fact I bet you he is going to use Sid's last few years to build the opportunity to win in 4 or 5 years...but his decisions on players never worked out in Toronto...and so far in Pittsburgh hasn't either....not one good solid hit (unless you count Eller)

Zach Hyman makes $5.5 AAV. Jared McCann makes $5 AAV. Dubas signed Tavares to $11 AAV and destroyed the Leafs. YIKES, he let Hyman and McCann go! How about the dumb Foligno trade or the Matt Murray signing. You can literally watch Toronto crap Dubas videos on TH-cam. Now Dubas of Toronto could of signed former Leaf Michael Bunting for free as a UFA last summer and he didn't. He signed bums and traded Jake Guentzel for Bunting, a player he could of got for free as a UFA.
