Let's understand his motivation regarding subsides and it's not in shareholders near term benefit. It is though honest in how he views there shouldn't be any subsides for ICE vehicles Or fossil fuel producers. Eliminating the latter is simply unrealistic so he is ok with just losing it on the EV industry. Tesla doesn't need them, but legacy does. Legacy will be hurt, Tesla will only reduce margins some but will be fine with more market share facing only Chinese imports for the majority of the threat, which can be managed a different way through import restrictions. Back to legacy auto being hurt, which hurts the unions of which Elon is not a fan, genuinely, again not from an anti-competitive view just from a it's not right view. Weakened unions represent less of a threat to Tesla's future manufacturing of cars, robots or anything else he comes up with. Which brings us to autos and subsides are meaningless in the big picture growth of the company and this shareholder value. He doesn't care about cars long term except for the fact that EVs help reach Tesla's mission statement. Ideally, I'm sure he would like no one to own a future car, it's not necessary, just rent a robotaxi ride. Less cars manufactured, weakened unions again. How can u have a union if you r not building something?
So he's building more robotaxis and less individually owned cars many yrs in the future, but even before then, Optimus. Optimus being built and used to enhance and replace workers in manufacturing (both will occur) another weakening of unions in manufacturing. Millions of robots being built and sold good for shareholders. Energy division growing and growing with little competition or subsides present. Saas and AI for automobiles as well as robots to enhance their capabilities over time. Need one to dig a ditch, we have that training just download here, need the same robot to cook you dinner, download here. Robots on Earth as well as used on moon and Mars. So back to subsides, 4d chess he's playing for sure. Remove subsides, reduce competitors ability to manufacture and sell competitive EV products, weaken their workforce so they do not become a disadvantage to your current and future business (reduces their political power and influence at the same time). Shareholder value increased over time, may just have to deal with a few points of reduced profit in the short term. Game, set, match.

That all sounds good for him. However, for the GOP looking to win those Midwest swing states, good luck supporting Tesla manufacturing in Texas and California while destroying Michigan and Ohio and winning next election.

Yep, ending EV tax incentives hurt legacy EV manufacturers far more than Tesla & continued/escalating tariffs greatly reduce China’s EV Imports. However, what billionaires like Musk see as win-win is a level of disruption and income disparity that fuels the hatred and violence of which, I fear, UnitedHealthcare murder is just the start.
Vilifying unions & union workers is counterproductive to a bright, widely shared prosperous future. Dunno the answer but it’s reminiscent of the longshoreman’s union demanding to restrict the use of robots.
