    I saw someone mentioned about using a piece of wax paper over the pan of your traps. One thing that I find is most conducive to catching fur, once you know how to make a set, is set on travel corridors where tracks can be seen. If I trap for bobcats I always try to hang a single feather for a curiosity attraction to my set.

    Now your on the right track. Just fasten the trap to a tree or something solid so you don't have to dig a hole. Think like an animal , not a person. Just for fun maybe put a trap between the bank and side of your building with bait in it. When you catch the animal , the bank will fall and bury it . Then you don't need to kill it.Let the people go that are going to dump you. Let them stay in the city. They are the 1 st ones to cry when they let there little dog run loose and a coyote gets them. !

    Ive enjoyed watching you two making your home in Northern Idaho, but your hell bent attempt on protecting a few chickens is a bit of a lost cause. Instead put the money into building a proper chicken coop. Line coop made with a cedar frame with a small Guage heavy mesh on all six sides. Build a shelter for them which includes a floor and perches as well as nest boxes. Just remember most animals who hunt, from bears to weasels can dig and very fast. As far a bobcat killing all of them, that's there nature and so are many other animals, such as weasels. Humans have some pretty funny ideas as to what is permissible as well and many people believe we are just a part of the animal kingdom. You be cheaper off buying your eggs from a neighbor till your home is finished. Spent the money on things that will make your house a home. You've got more than enough to tackle. Just a few, your bank behind the house, vapour barrier, drywall, maybe moving your chimney, just to mention a few. Kill a species of animal and a bigger one will show up. We all need to learn to live with nature, not fight it cause you'll never beat it. If threatened a female coyote will have larger litters is just one. If build a house below sea level you better build a windmill and barriers. Just ask New Orleans. The list goes on. Regardless stay safe and "KEEP TRUCKING" so to speak.

    I have been a trapper for over 50 years, from weasels to wolves. No disrespect but the first video you posted setting the traps was pathetic and now you are doing a how to video?
    I can tell you first hand you are almost wasting your time. Trap that one cat another will move in because there is an easy food source. You would be better of securing your chickens. It's not that difficult or costly and time better well spent, saving you years of agony and lost fowl.

    • @LaidBackLiving
      @LaidBackLiving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have plans to build a solid coop. A little difficult with a foot of snow on the ground. Did the basics get covered in this video? We know the first videos were pathetic. This video is to help anyone who was in the position we were in a few weeks back. Thanks for the comment and watching!

    • @mtlefty8687

      @@LaidBackLiving I also have 50 years of trapping experience since I was a small child and I would like to commend you for the knowledge you obtained between your first video and this one. You learned more about trap prep and basic setting requirements in one week than I did in my first 5 years as a kid reading Fur, Fish and Game magazine. I agree with others, you do need to make your animal pens more secure. If you don't mind some constructive suggestions, I would recommend you make the lower section of you fence out of 1/2" hardware cloth and bury the bottom about 1 foot below grade with a "L" bend at the bottom with the base of ,the L going away from the fence for a foot or more. This prevents a digging predator from going under your fence. Almost all predators will dig down at the base of the fence and when they hit the 1 foot horizontal bend, they will give up. I, unfortunately, learned this the hard way a few years ago when two mink chewed through my flimsy chicken wire pen and killed 225 baby pheasants. If you are sure you are after a bobcat, you might consider hanging, from a tree on a string, a highly visible item like a chicken wing, turkey feather or even tin foil several feet from your set. Bobcats are highly inquisitive and will investigate the area and your bait and lure will due the rest. As they say, curiosity killed the cat! Also look for videos on "straw sets" which will work very nicely in/on extremely frozen ground.
      Sorry this was so long...just wanted to encourage you to learn more about trapping. Your're doing great

      @@LaidBackLiving Most modern traps today (like your coil springs) have offset jaws that do not close all the way. This allows the animals leg to be "held" and there is seldom bone or blood vessel damage. I have released many non-target animals from these traps and the animal scampers away without any damage to the leg/paw. Unfortunately, the haters are told stories of trappers in the "old days" using jaws with teeth (mostly bear traps) that did severe damage to any animal who triggered the trap. Those days are long gone. I know trapping is a highly emotional topic but haters should educate themselves before calling others names. Just do a You Tube search for "bobcat release" or "fox release", etc. and you will be surprised.
