I was thinking about picking up Genshin Impact recently, so I'm watching this. But I just have to say, who makes a game/story with limited time canon events you have to show up for and then delete them out of the system, but keep them canon -.-
That's like launching a giant movie in theaters then it leaves and never releases on dvd.

For the temporary events that are no longer available, I would generally advise to play the Archon Quest, then look up the Event cutscenes for that patch on TH-cam. Maybe some longplays for the summer events, just to see the massive and gorgeous maps they had put out for them.

This was a good overview. If you're not someone who digs deep into game lore and story, there really are no effective blockers to start now. If your love of games is driven by lore and story, I would recommend finding a few content creators who have captured entire limited events on TH-cam and some lore analyzers (like Aster), then proactively mapping out your content. You don't want to watch spoilers early, but you don't want get too far without certain knowledge. Good luck.

I got interested in Genshin in the summer of last year after watching a video titled something along the lines of "now is the best time to start playing Genshin". I started with 3.0 And it took me until 3.2 to catch up with the main story but i still had Enkanomiya to explore and do all the side quests i missed by rushing the main story. Now that i'm up to date with everything i have my downtimes at the end of each update, eagerly waiting for next map expansions. This lack of content between updates prevents me from burning out because i simply don't play that often. Every time a new area of the map is released however, i play a lot.

This isn't a MMORPG which require you to hit new level cap and get decent gear before getting invited to raids. Just enjoy the story at your own pace instead of rushing to "catch up", because once you do catch up - there's nothing there. No endgame. No activities. No anything. Every journey has its final day - don't rush.

I've got a tiny bit of criticism I feel like I need to add: If I were a new player, 7:10 might give the impression that the base game doesn't have any story or lore outside of limited events - at the very least, it would make me think the majority of the story takes place in the limited events. Yes, some of the biggest lore drops and best story telling happen in them, but it's kind of just a drop in the bucket when compared to the vast amount of story content and lore in the game. Especially the deeper lore that provides the world-building and history; the vast majority of that is in item descriptions etc. There's so much that most people who care about it rely on the wiki and lore videos, which is probably why there are so many headcannons in contention with one another. If anything, there's too much lore in the base game - which, iirc, is a sentiment you've shared in the past.

Inazuma is the big problem for character materials. The Chasm and Enanomiya may also be an issue. Fontaine is actually easier than most of Sumeru. When Fontaine came out, they had that book of stuff to do there which gave extra resources if you gathered materials and killed bosses. I managed to clear most of it on an account I opened up to help me learn Japanese (don't ask), and I don't think I'd finished the Monstadt arc at that point. Inazuma, on the other hand... You should be able to get to the weekly bosses there thanks to one of the recent QoL changes, but materials and open-world bosses are locked until you can open up the islands. That is something the seriously need to fix. I mean, Raiden and Yoimya are on banner right now. Wish for and get either of them without having Inazuma open and you are stuck at level 40.
Meanwhile, it's not really the cool 5-stars you're locked out of until their banners come around again. Trying to 'wish for' a 4-star you like is a total mug's game. I got Chevreusse at C6 just recently, but only because I was determined to get Raiden's C2 and I had a lot of primos save. I got the C6 on the pull I got the C2 on. I calculated it's almost £500 (call it $600) I put down for that and I WOULD NOT HAVE if I'd actually had to spend that much cash! You can wish for 5-stars, but practically, 4-stars are more random and you're less likely to get the ones you want.
    End rant.

Gives me something to aim for, but I have a useless character until I can do all that. (Though weirdly, I found I had components to get her to level 50. Somewhere, I beat some vishaps that dropped the right parts, and I have no idea where. Maybe Shenhe's quest.)

If I had started the game today I prob would have dropped it quite quickly. Having experienced all the stuff in the pace we did was just prefect for me. For anyone interested in starting Genshin this year:
I'm a free-to-play player, started playing at launch then stopped after one month and a half and go back in 3.0 when sumeru released and played through the main quests and explored the new areas
The game is really good, the combat mechanics are really satisfactory and seeing as you improve in how to best utilize the characters is really nice
I wouldn't recommend spending any money on it (not even battle pass) because it is very expensive, and you wont't be missing anything otherwise
You can beat the hardest content in the game with the characters you get for free (and from time to time you're also getting enough primogems to pull for 5* characters, you'll just have to plan ahead)
Easily one of the best free games there are, you're not getting this amount of content even in some AAA +$60 games.

    • @_Nyxus_

I would say it's only expensive if you go for a lot of characters. I just do welkin and BP and it's only like $15 per month. That with all the primos from events and exploration is enough to get a lot of characters.

A couple things while listening (for newcomers). Aster said "stories" instead of events when she was speaking of lore and limited time events. Story quests, including the huge archon and world quests, are all available. Also, while there is a resin (stamina) system which you use to farm domains and/or bosses for artifacts (think equipment) and level up materials, you can continue to explore the overworld, solve puzzles, open chests, fight monsters, etc. Not sure if that's clear to anyone not familiar with the game. Aster has done a great job introducing Genshin. I don't think it's unusual to play a game for a long, long time and need a break. (Just came off of a Genshin break myself) so don't let that scare you away either. You can play F2P if you wish and never spend a dime. It will take longer to save up for that limited 5 star, but you will be able to get them. I was F2P for 2.5 years before I decided to purchase the battlepass. My buddy who got me into the game is still F2P.

I would only recommend this game to anyone if they know they'll be able to resist buying primogems (the premium currency), and able to resist the "endgame grind" (there is no endgame¹). If you're just here for the stories and the exploration, then sure, the stories are great, personally I can never have enough of the main archon quests, and exploration feels fun and rewarding, with how much interesting and pretty stuff there is to discover.
But for anything else, a *big no* from me.
I've been playing for almost 3 years, and while i find the combat system incredibly fun, the elemental reaction system is one of the best i've ever seen in any videogame, there is no place to truly express your knowledge about it. The enemies in general suck too. After you're done catching up, all you do is wait for new content, do daily commissions and resin (stamina) spending, and some events every 2 weeks or so. My best advice is to really take your time, if you do decide to play, no reason to rush at all.
¹There is a tiny bit of endgame (Spiral Abyss), but it refreshes only twice a month, and it's more annoying than fun to do. Overworld enemies die to 2 skills, unless you unequip all your equipment, so no way to do like, full rotations with your characters you grinded so hard for, at which point why did you grind for it anyway.

For me I joined the game when Nahida came out... and I was overwhelmed and am still overwhelmed by how much there is to do. To the point where sometimes I feel like just logging off instead of hitting up the long laundry list of quests and exploration I still have to do. Like I want to complete them... heck some even give primogems. It's just too much sometimes.

One of the best game so far to be honest. But if you want to 100 percent all map you need patience and waste lot of your time playing it. Talking after talking not adding skip button will waste players time even when you want just to explore. The game itself is perfect like the animation plus the scenery is so good. But you need bunch of youtube video tutorials cause some puzzle doesnt have clue. For example fontain. You keep progressing having stonger character but when you reach fontain they will give you bunch of puzzle likee your lvl 90 character gonna do about it? Tricky puzzles for a regular chest.

Nowadays I would encourage someone to play Genshin if they are already willing to play, and I would just give some guidance on the game's systems, but I wouldn't invite someone to play. I try this with one of my friends, but he hates gachas and he keeps thinking that I'm going to spend all my savings on the game at any moment.

It's not even leaks with "some Islands of Fontaine", you can simply see it with the amount of geography which haven't been unlocked surrounding Fontaine, it probably won't be as bloated as Sumeru's geographical expansions (although the Oasis are some of the most beautiful 3D open world geography in any video game ever so far), although Honkai Star Rail QoL are still waaaaaaay superior compared to Genshin's insufferable catchup to those that wants faster exploration for new players that got struck by getting newer gacha characters (or God forbid, trying to upgrading Inazuma characters)
Oh yeah, also the good part of the lore/character plot are from time-gated limited time events, not to mention stuffs like Festering Desire that not even all still-playing veterans managed to get, let alone whoever plays more recent

A lot of these complaints are essentially "it's a live service gacha game," and that's honestly extremely fair. It's a very problematic business model, but as long as you're not prone to problem gambling you can find tons to enjoy for little or no money.

I always considered myself to have started playing Genshin "late" since I started playing 3 weeks into 2.0 but looking back now, I missed 7 and a half patches and I've played 21 and a half patches. I think I no longer classify as a "late" starter.
Any who, on the topic of missed events and non-obtainable things, new players can not get Aloy through any means because much like event weapons and furnishings she's never coming back.
As for missed events, none haunt me as much as the Unreconciled Stars event because whether you experienced it or didn't changes Inazuma's Archon Quest. Sure it's only a tiny change but that feeling of knowing there is a separate dialogue which I can never get, that feeling really sucks.
I don't want to end my comment on a low note, so: new players who feel like they missed out on Aloy, the "up side?" is that she's not really a strong character so you didn't miss much. :)

Sure it's not a game without any flaws as all games are. But they are improving slowly. It's not a bad game as you heard from random people on the internet and it's not the best gacha game but it's a good game that I can say proudly.

  • @ImJustStandingHere

If Genshin wants to last for the next few years (which judging by the pace at which regions are released, it's going to take a few years to wrap up the story) then it DESPERATELY needs more endgame content. I came back at the end of last month for the first time since the chasm released (got burnt out then) and am already starting to run out of things to do after finishing the Sumeru and Fontaine stories. Obviously there is still exploration and world quests, but I have almost no incentive to build and pull for new characters when the endgame is the same as it was almost 2 years ago when I last played. I hoped there would finally be more to do, but there isn't. I don't see myself staying long term again. I'll probably start coming back for a month at a time with each new region once the archon quests are completed but thats about it because spiral abyss is so boring

I'd argue against the importance of the lore in the limited events. Not that the lore is irrelevant, but most of it is just crumbs and feel like foreshadowing than anything substantial. If you missed out, the story is still coherent and any of the ideas that the limited events touched on are actually fleshed out in the main story. More often than not, limited events are just filler content teasing main content or is just additional world building that doesn't make sense to add into the main story. Albedo is an interesting byproduct here because while he's a 5 star character, he's technically a tease to a more important character, Rhinedottir, who still hasn't really made an appearance (as with the rest of the Hexenzirkel). When they do appear in the main story, we all just have to trust that everything about them will actually be explained properly.

I like to reverse psychology people who ask me if they should play Genshin, usually after I've just excitedly dumped a years worth of lore on them. Just "Dear god, please don't, it will take over your life, do not become me." AKA I joined this game to join an RP Server out of boredom in late lockdown and the lore has me in a death grip to this day. Especially with the literature references... It's beautiful and I love it and I love when I hear another niche classical literature reference and have the joy of a toddler with a three tier birthday cake with sparklers because of a passing 2 line NPC reference to the Ring of Nibelung or The Count Of Monte Cristo. But that's me being a nerd who got hit with the really weird eclectic niche this game had that just worked and I am going to be here to the bitter end, meta or no meta XDD

I've been playing two asia accounts since 2021 and the f2p account got to AR 60 in 2023. I gave away my f2p account and started a new account on the america server during 4.2.
I am crazy yes but the experience was refreshing since I've been used to just having the materials I need from months of collecting stuff. I revisited mondstad and liyue after months of just not going there because I already 100% the map.
I now understand the story quest struggle where some character is stuck in another quest and how with enough story quests this can set off a chain of going back and forth multiple different quests and ruining the over all experience. This happened when I didn't finish Kaeya and Ambers story quests before finishing the mondstat archon quest because I raised my AR by opening waypoints and statues in sumeru and fontaine.
Funny thing I did at AR 25 was doing the Aranara quest instead of the Liyue archon quest. It originally took me around four days to complete both the main quest and the side quests in the world quest. So when I speed ran the main quest and ignoring the side quests it took me six hours to complete.
So yeah starting to play genshin the older it gets is the better choice imo as there will be more permanent content things to do on top of the artificial time gate keep system. If you can find it in yourself to be content with only the starter characters, you'll have a really beautiful world to explore both physically and historically and many different storys about many different characters
And the limited event content that contain lore is just like any other moment in life, it cant be repeated. You cant repeat your birth or that one event that shaped your life. Its something that happened once. I can play genshin over and over, but nothing will compare to the first play through.
I don't really feel like i've missed out on unreconciled stars or the first lantern rite. And im a self proclaimed lore enjoyer. Yes, missing out on a limited event has meant you've missed out on some lore but the archive that is the internet is there. People who were there and are happy to share the memory as a witness to times gone by. Its a reason for old and new fans to bond.

1 to 2 months to 100% everything for a _new_ player?! Not a chance. Maybe an experienced player who already knows everything about the game, with a guide for things like hidden chests and quest-locked oculi, skipping all dialogue, playing multiple hours per day. And that would be a challenge run. I'm a shameless video game nerd, the kind that does Insanity runs and has played MMOs for actual decades, and after six months of playing Genshin a couple hours per day, I had it about ~85% complete.

As a really new player the big problem of the game is that it is a single player game that the development company treated it as an online mmo.
I'm not going to dive deep in the lore because it's not worth the time doing it.
Honestly I got it free for my young underage daughter to play because of its anime looks and aesthetics.
I thought it would be a nice way for her to start playing RPGs.
But after a few hours of playing I can see it has a difficult play style that can be confusing to many players.
The fact that you need to constantly change your character mid-fight is absurd.
And don't get me started with all those bits and upgrade staff you need to do all the time to keep your heros up for the fight.
So,.....it's a free game to spend some time but NOT worthy the time of deep dive in lore or anything more.
If they had made it a co-op mmo with one character with character customisation like normal RPGs it would be a way better game.
A big missed opportunity for a great game.

I wouldn’t recommend joining the game at this point because of a lot of “I missed out on all these C5 characters that come back once a year”, the very integral lore-bombs of limited time events (Unreconciled Stars and Albedo’s stories are on the top of that), the soul-sucking burnout-inducing artifact system preventing the feeling of progress toward improving characters, the number of C6-locked characters (Sara, Gorou, Faruzan, etc).
Invokation TCG is the first event that literally put me to sleep. Why add a strategy card game to an Action/Adventure RPG? Besides achievement primos, none of TCG helps build your characters or gameplay. It just feels pointless.
I’m not particularly fond of the Fontainian HP and poorly-explained Pneumousia mechanics- it’s adding layers of things to stress about during combat. The only Fontaine character I like is Neuvillette. I despise playing Furina- so much so that after getting her to Friendship 10, I threw her off Starsnatch Cliff, she’s the only permanently dead character in my roster.
I have a feeling that I’ll be sitting and thinking, “This is it… just grinding and bad characters until new region?!”

I wouldn't consider Genshin if you want to get every five star unless you want to whale this game. It is not realistic to be able to pull for every character in Genshin as a ftp or low spender. It can get quite frustrating too when you lose your 50/50. Also you need to farm materials and artifacts every time you get a new five star. This will eat a lot of your resources and time.
Choose your favorite characters wisely and highly recommend playing them in the trials for while to get a feel of them. Other than that, it's an amazing game that you can enjoy very casually. The characters, lores, and explorations are the best part of this game. This game really gives off breath of the wild vibe which is why I enjoy this game a lot still.
