    "The Unspoken Bond"
Some things are better left unsaid. A comfortable silence whispered over the unspoken promise exchanged when your eyes first met. Together you share a grueling conviction. He rewards your dedication with a persistent plea for your companionship. If only he knew the feeling was mutual. On that dark, crisp morning you embark to fulfill his inherent purpose. Four earnest eyes scan the horizon with a concealed intensity when that Lone Duck interrupts the desolate sky. The crack of your gun unleashes a frantic hunger to retrieve his fallen prize. He returns, fully saturated and satisfied, with the fragrance of gunpowder generously lingering. Together you celebrate a promise kept.
Your binding faith is one that most can’t comprehend. They neglect the depth of the instinctive understanding you have for each other. Like the exuberant validation you shared in the field with that first Lone Duck. It’s feelings like this that remind you they’re reserved for a select few. There’s no need to fill them with empty words. Some things are better left unsaid.

I have never had a gun shy dog. They love guns and if they could would be dragging the gun out to encourage me to go. With that said, I have a new puppy coming and your video was so helpful. In the back of my mind I am thinking about bad habits before they start. Great video!

Great vid..and I'm the guy you described. My 5month old vizsla seemed ready to go. Shot plenty of birds over her, retreive, everything seemed fine. My buddies dog got hurt, so opening day for dove, she came with me. She did not have a good day. We are getting back to normal, but I learned a lesson.

Whether right or wrong, I introduced gun fire with with a friend in the distance shooting a 209 primer starting gun while the dog was going out on a water retrieve. I figured the dog was totally focused on both swimming and the retrieval of the dummy. He really couldn't spin around to see the shot. It worked out fine, Wondering if this was the right way to start out on my new pup? I did make it a point to let the dog see guns in his everyday routine around the house.

Our 1 yr old lab is gun shy. Loves to retrieve but when gun goes off he freezes and won't finish the the retrieve. We have been using a starter pistol from about 150-200 yds away. He won't even go near the bumper or duck once the gun goes off. He has zero interest in treats once the gun goes off
Fireworks or thunderstorms don't phase him. I've been playing gun shot noises through a speaker in the house..doesn't bother him.
Our other lab never had any issues with gun so I'm at a loss.

Have you ever seen where an experienced hunting dog turns gun shy all of the sudden? Just happened to me. It sure what happened. I’m treating it like staring over with him and moving slow so as to not make it worse. Wanting to build his confidence and excitement again before he hears another shot at all. Just not sure what happened as he’s hunted 2 seasons just fine. Three year old English black lab.

Was it ever exposed to fireworks or being at a shooting range? Bad situation when that happens.

But what do you do when he is already / previously damaged and being horribly scared of noises . It is not introduce the noise for him it is how to correct being scared. He is a a nit interested in food or treat when he is scared

That’s an awesome question… when I’ve dealt with it in the past, I’d use their natural drive and desire to retrieve to build them up and very very slowly reintroduce at great distances and slowly move closer. This is a huge patience game but food isn’t enough

switch the food. we'd recommend eukanuba's puppy formula. also, contact your breeder and see what they're used to eating and how they're used to eating it (crushed, whole, mixed, mush, etc.).

Just to be clear these fireworks that were going off or over a mile away hanging in the backyard and the firewood start going off and she spooked around the house when we bought the land now I’ll have my neighbor who is over 400 yards of lake shooting at 22 long rifle and now the dog is afraid to go outside. She goes outside for a quick second and then shoots straight to the house.

I've tried a slightly different technique to prevent gun shy pups..... food.
I have the pup out of site ( around the corner of my house ) I fire a 22 blank and have my daughter bring the pup to eat.
All labs LOVE to eat. So by day 2 they come running.
I can do this 3 times a day for several weeks.
Then I do as the above video several weeks later.
