Great topic. I am looking into some of these. I live in a country right now where bootlegs are also legal. All of our computer software is also bootleg. The Beach is cool for sure.

It's an interesting topic for sure. I know I'd much rather have original studio discs and from a moral point of view I always feel a little uneasy. I just wish the studios would release these great movies but until they do I'll probably keep getting these 'legal' bootlegs. I know if the Abyss is released to the same standard as these ones I'll be picking it up. It's tragic that film in particular never got a great restoration. We should be enjoying a beautiful 4K of it by now but instead... DVD!

I’ve just gotten into Blu-ray bootlegs. But only for my favorite shows and movies with ZERO physical release around the world. I just want to make sure I can watch my favorite media for the rest of my life. I already pay to stream them and have bought them digitally. And if they ever put them out officially on psychical media, I will absolutely buy them all again.

Yes I think this is a reasonable approach to bootlegs. I would be cautious though not to overdo it as they can be very expensive for what they are. I only have a few because I don't think they're really worth spending premium prices which they always try to charge for something that doesn't benefit the creators. There's a fine line to tread so I keep them to a minimum and continue to hope for official releases!

What is the picture quality on panic room like? The source has to be from a 1080P HD TV broadcast?

It’s the same as all the other bootlegs that never got a real release. As far as I know it’s a HDTV broadcast which means it’s… fine and I have no real issues with it but you’ll never be blown away by the detail present.
One thing I noticed is that these releases are always transcoded at a high bitrate (resulting in a larger file size), presumably to give the impression that it’s a higher quality than it really is.
It’s probably the best out there but fundamentally the same as anyone could get through dodgy sources online.
Can’t wait until they actually release this one for real. Why it hasn’t been already is a mystery to me.

@@CollectingBlu-rays I've taken a chance on it. For some reason on the DVD i found on both the DTS and dolby digital the dialogue was quite poor and not discernable at points. Bad mixing.

@stuarttacey it’s been a while since I watched the DVD but I don’t remember feeling there was an issue with the audio on this so hopefully you’ll be satisfied. I’ll keep my fingers crossed you’re happy with it!

I’m not a big fan of bootlegs, I prefer to wait for the film to be released with the features and hopefully in 4k I have noticed a lot of Disney shows being sold clearly they are rips from the streams. A lot of people bought The Abyss and True Lies. With Dogma all collectors get those weird ideas in their head we wouldn’t be collectors if we didn’t.

That pirated version of True Lies is better than Cameron's official version loaded with DNR, at least the pirated version shows what the film was like when it was released, the same color palette, with its details and grain.
