As a Chicago dude I gotta be honest, when New York adopted LA gang politics that’s when y’all lost y’all identity…. It’s 3 cities in America that create street culture here in America that’s LA, Chicago, and it was New York, for the life of me I just don’t understand why y’all gave up y’all identity! The country use to mimic y’all slang, style, swag etc….

The only thing that separates the gangs in La & Chicago from other black gangs in other states is that you belong to a higher umbrella or nation. The gangs are crews. Nothing different. Just bigger. Gangs in La pre- date crips and bloods . So in reality all the gangs in La would have been independent gangs and crews and block just like other states

Personally growing up in The Bronx during the rise of bloods and crips. I was disappointed in the 5 boroughs. Bloods and crips was a Cali thing NY was known for clicks and crews. people had pride in checking anyone who was not from your block:what block you from? Someone saying nah he good he’s from such and such block was a form of validation. Than 031 popped up October 31st you had to be on full alert and make sure you didn’t catch a buck 50 for no reason. Sliced in the face. I’m not a street dude and I’m not a sucka I hated the mental trauma that ish caused. I would wear red because i was told i couldn’t wear red are you insane this is NYC

Back when this whole blood and crip thing was really catching on, I remember school being empty af one Halloween. The rumor was the bloods was gonna be up at my HS slicing ppl. I tried to get out of going to school that day, and my parents was NOT having it! I went to school that day and nothing happened. People was saying they went to another HS not too far away. So I ran into my homeboy that afternoon (we used to take the train home together) who went to that HS and I asked him about was school crazy for him. He said no because ppl at his school was saying the Bloods decided to go to my school instead 🤣🤣🤣🤣

yea man.. definitely remember those days. I used to go to I.S.184 & the gangs were brewing/coming up. ñetas, zulu, kings, bloods, & crips. then I remember when ddp came around way before trinitarios now but I remember ddp coming to my school to recruit people but my school had a lot of bloods. I used to watch the news people getting sliced for wearing red & I honestly was not feeling that at all. I remember digging deeper and learning more of the "gang culture" I guess you could say & ended up becoming a Crip after realizing those were the bloods enemies. funny thing is we went to my grandmother's house every other day & the area she lived in were all crips but back in those days crips were quiet. we weren't LOUD like the bloods were so people didn't even suspect anything all they saw was blue. I lost a few "friends" cause they were bloods but I never liked or wanted to join them especially didn't like the way they were moving & doing things. I will never forget the next day I walked into school with a blue durag & everybody looking at me like I was crazy but my mentality was "F*** them" long story short I may not be proud of where this life took me but I have learned a lot in my journey. 💙 all I tell my locs & fellow new yorkers stay safe out there.. there's more to life than just "the block" expand your mind.

Blood and crip are natural rivals. If the brothers would've called themselves Black Power or something like that, I really don't think that it would've been a major crip presence to go against them. I was born and raised in Brooklyn. Born in '83 and grew up in the '90s. What Math said at the end of this clip about Bloods and Crips are spot on, and this is why I tell people that NYC is not a gang city like LA or Chicago. You could be Blood and have a whole set behind you in New York, but street politics and culture don't fully subscribe to deep-rooted gang affiliation. You didn't NEED to be Blood or Crip if you had enough street pull, whereas it seems like in LA or Chicago it's so engrained in their culture that you practically cannot survive without joining a gang. For regular people like me, Bloods and Crips blowing up in NYC in the '90s meant that I was going to lose an altercation immediately if I got into beef with a gang member. But certain people who lived the street life would look down on gang affiliation, almost like it was embarrassing to be in a gang. Math just comes from that era where NYC authenticity was still prevalent. Aside from Freeway Ricky, you seldom hear of people from LA who were able to make moves without being part of some sort of gang.
In NYC, gangs are part of our street history, even before Bloods, Crips and Latin Kings. In Chicago and LA, gangs are at the forefront street life history and politics. One is not better or worse than the other, that's just the way it is.

      1. Freeway Ricky was never in a gang. That’s why I pointed out he was an exception.
      2. I never once typed that NYC didn’t have gangs. I’m aware of everything from The Warriors to Lo Lives, Decepticons, 5 percenters, and other organic home grown NYC gangs. My point is that you did not NEED to be in a gang to survive. Almost all street politics in LA and Chicago are somehow connected to gangs. It is not like that in NYC. Sometimes gangs are involved, and sometimes they are not.
In LA and Chicago, you practically NEED to be in a gang to survive. If you are having trouble understanding that then either your reading comprehension skills are not at the same level as my initial comment or you are just not familiar with how deep rooted gang culture is in Southern California and Chicago.
Again, I never typed that there are NO gangs in NYC. There are gangs everywhere. But NYC is not a gang city like LA and Chicago. Not sure why that’s so difficult to understand.

To be honest being from Cali (South Central) I've always been more of a New York fan regarding the music.
I was always attracted to NY slang, the NY accent, the NY rap style, the scenery from what I've seen in music videos and movies with the snow and big tall buildings.
Throughout my childhood and teen years I always wanted to go to NY because of its distinction from CA.
I know Cali shit, seen CA shit, lived and talked that Cali shit so the last thing I want to be reminded of is more Cali shit somewhere else.
The reason why classic NY rap is my favorite NY rap is because niggas like Biggie, Jay Z, Nas, 50 Cent, Jadakiss etc gave us that true NY culture with the timbs, big puffy jackets, and that authentic east coast hustler vibe.
I say all this to say I think this modern NY-version of Cali, shit is weak ass fuck.
I'm no longer interested in visiting NY no more because that shit watered down.
When I go to Brooklyn I wanna experience that organic classic NY hood shit not a Brooklyn-version of Compton, that's borin.
I'll just stay my ass in Compton CA if I wanna see Compton.
The Crip and Blood shit will only look good on Cali niggas because we were the ones who organically originated the culture.
Let some Cali niggas try copying down south niggas puttin grillz all in our mouths and shit we'll look goofy ass fuck because that ain't our natural swagg that's for them Houston niggas or New Orleans niggas.

Maff hoffa is an intelligent dude. Hes made mistakes but he was able to learn from his mistakes earlier than most people do. Like he said the problem will never stop because its our society in general. There will always be more sheep in society in general than leaders, and thats why its vital to have balance in society, along with more leaders to wake up a lot of those sheep and nourish the lost souls. If we continue going down this same route where quick fixes, violence, and pleasure overshadows being self sufficient as well as educated us as a society will fail in the long run. I was one lf those people growing up in the 80s and 90s who was fascinated by violence, gangs, and even their urban style. I wasnt peer pressured to do nothing nor did i ever get locked up, but i can admit to a certain degree the negative aspect hiphop had a level of influence. But luckily i grew up in an era where there was not only balance in music, but also a lot of positige role models. We control our own destiny but if youre conditioned in a certain negative enviroment only a few will be able to change their circumstances mentally the rest will get influence by it thats just life. Now we are dealing with a totally new era where there is no balance and now this era is adopting the negative aspect mostly of the 90s which was the first era to embrace it in abundance despite out balance. Now as a old head it kind of makes me feel like and accomplice because we helped pave the way for the negativity today.

To be honest the source is this one world we are now living in with the internet, along with society. The internet magnified the glorification of street life and made it mainstream. Before the internet each region in the us was more distinct and seemed like another world. Yeah you can still tell the different from different regions of the us, but people are more likely to all adopt the same style and do the same thing as the rest of the nation now. It also makes time fly with all the distractions by the second. People had more time to perfect their craft back than, it was just a different world we grew up in and took for granted. despite the internets benefits i feel it has made us go backwards instead of forward as humans, but of course only by hindsight and wisdom the old heads will understand more since they are less brainwashed than the present generation. It a reoccuring cycle each generation.
